I think that given the era this was recorded Jerry handled this topic very well. Referring to his guests as ladies would have confused his audience and he might have lost the point he was trying to make. I generally dislike a lot of the “men living as women” episodes from that era but this actually seemed quite respectful and really tried to show these people as extremely talented and well adjusted people and not some freak show or comedy.

Calling them men was not very nice. He seemed more progressive earlier on the show. Nevertheless, he's got the spirit and we could all benefit from the empathy he had for the rights and needs of others.

the fact that he emphasized “men” in a joking manner is way more progressive than so many people around that time, and I’m sure it wasn’t that big of an issue for the women. I do agree that times have changed and even jokingly saying it isn’t correct, but he was way ahead of his time as far as being progressive about it

It's the intention that matters most. We're in a different era now, but his comment was certainly well-intentioned.
