CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.) learns of his new contract from Roy Firestone, he has an emotional breakdown on TV.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Combining drama, comedy, and romance, Jerry Maguire was a critical and commercial success built on an original script by writer/director Cameron Crowe and an Oscar-nominated performance by Tom Cruise. Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is an agent with a major sports management firm. He's enthusiastic, successful, a great negotiator and people like him. But it begins to dawn on Jerry that there's something wrong with what he's doing, and not long after a troubling encounter with the son of an injured athlete he represents, Jerry has a serious crisis of conscience. In the midst of a sleepless night, Jerry writes a memo calling on himself and his colleagues to think more about the long-term welfare of the clients they represent and less about immediate profits. While everyone around him applauds the sentiment, Jerry's superiors think his ideas are bad for business; Jerry is fired, and, rather than standing in solidarity with him, his "friends" in the firm scramble like sharks to claim Jerry's clients. At the end of his last day, the only people willing to join Jerry as he strikes out on his own are staff accountant Dorothy (Renee Zellweger), a single mother secretly in love with him, and Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a football player whose pride and arrogance have gotten in the way of his reaching his potential. Jerry Maguire earned an Academy Award for Cuba Gooding Jr.'s performance as Tidwell and provided a breakthrough role for Renee Zellweger; it also made "Show me the money!" an unavoidable catchphrase for several months.

This is one of those scenes that manages to be hilarious and heartfelt. As funny and charismatic as Rod is in this moment, when you see him start to tear up, you think back on all the things he and Jerry went through to get to that moment. That’s why I believe athletes get emotional when they succeed. When you put that much of yourself into something, it’s overwhelming.

Cruise should have won the Oscar for playing Jerry Maguire. The memo and the philosophy of the story were genuinely played by him. I think that Cuba Gooding Jr. was fantastic but his Oscar for best supporting character was also a consequence of how profoundly Cruise did.

I TOTALLY agree with you Jorge. Cruise's performance was a one in a lifetime performance. Tom and Cuba should have BOTH won an Oscar. Both were equally important in that Movie PERIOD 😤 How could you leave one out from that award in an INCREDIBLE movie. You can't. This was Tom's BEST ever overall performance in my opinion. NO stunt stuff here, PURE raw emotions. NEVER get tired of watching this movie, which is the tell tale sign it's a classic.

I love that they include in this scene Jerry meeting Troy Aikman, and they mention that Troy has read his memo. Shows that Jerry has embraced his "mission statement" and will probably be building up a small Sports Agency shop he and his wife run, where they will only take on a small selection of clients, probably all studs like Troy, and focus on a personal relationship with the athlete and his family, offering a true full service kind of option, not just someone to push paperwork for contracts and endorsements.

The NFL produced a little 'what happened next' scenario for the Rod Tidwell character, and it turns out he became one of the best players in the NFL over the 4 year period of his 11 million dollar contract! In fact, he was so good that he was eventually offered a contract extension worth 100 million dollars, but he turned it down and retired because he felt that he finally got what he wanted. The recognition, the appreciation and more than enough money to last him and his family for several lifetimes. (Don’t forget, this was just a lucrative contract extension, add in inflation over the last 20 years AND several likely new sponsorship deals that Rod felt he wasn’t getting before, it would’ve made him an extremely wealthy man) I just felt that it was such a fitting and touching end to the character.

Went from laughing to tears in one scene. The funniest is " my older brother who has one leg but still doing it & my younger brother t.p ur militant but I love you. When he is crying & says " jerry Maguire my agent u are my ambassador of Quan man " I love the loyalty between these two. It starts out that they need eachother bc if their bad situations. Jerry gets fired from the big agent firm & loses all his clients except for rod. Rod probably stayed with jerry bc I doubt any of the other agents wanted him bc he was going to be a free agent & his career is floundering . The coach does not want him bc he is short & small with a bad attitude. Plus his coach & gm is so happy to stick it to jerry when he was a shark & driving up all the prices on him. Bc rod gets offered a crappy deal he rejects it & plays harder than ever & & can not get hurt without a contract. Jerry has no clients but just sticks with rod at his beck & call & working all year for free for him giving him a lot of his time for no money. Rod says to him " bet on me like I bet on you " I loved the part where rod us playing better & sugar the creep starts circling rod & rod tells him to get lost. In the end his " mission statement " about fewer clients & more attention worked out in the end. By working on his own jerry gets a nice commission on the big money rod finally gets. If Jerry still worked for s.i. they would have gotten the lions share of the commission & him a small portion. Since he is his own boss it worked out he got the whole commission. My favorite scene is we see rod bitter that all the other guys on the team get reporters while he stews alone at his locker. When he finally has a ton if press people in his face all he asks is " where' s Jerry & how they embrace bc they believed in the other & now rod was gonna get the big money. Not only does he get the 11 million contract but imagine all the endorsements?

For some reason I thought of this scene today, and we’re in mid year of 2022. “Jerry Maguire, my agent. You're my ambassador of Quan.” The beginning of the scene then to where Rod says that to Jerry is so emotional. The scene is funny, humorous and then starts taking a turn for the personal and becomes so powerful for Jerry and Rod. A great scene from a great movie. I’m going to rewatch the movie tonight.

It goes to show that the character of a man is not defined by media interviews. The real character of a man is what he does outside the game. The character Rod Tidwell displays this perfectly. The next time you hear someone criticizes a professional athlete think twice on if the criticism is appropriately placed.

Many cool things about this movie. One is that the lawyer McGuire is based off of, Leigh Steinberg, had the cameo of introducing McGuire to Troy Aikman. Steinberg was Aikman's agent and also had a part in ESPN's "League in Denial" where he relates the story of Aikman getting a serious concussion in a superbowl game and Steinberg sitting with him in the hospital room.

Today he'd get that in rookie contract. And before people say "oh yeah that's them overpaid!" No. No. No. That's the new standard because we have the DVR which made live events particularly sports into advertising premium positions guaranteeing that people were watching their ads. So networks made tons more, charging increased premium amounts. Then in turn, the sports leagues said ok well if you want our live events, you better cough up the dough. And networks did. Combine that with new HD tv and a lot of people stopped coming to games because they rather would have the luxury of their own home minus the parking fees, time of travel, etc and that made more people watching the games. I'd wager in NFL...they make around 50% of their revenue from TV contracts. It's around 40-60% and they're tapping into Europe and other countries to bulk up revenue. So you factor all this new money and of course players get more. Because the area of the pie just more than doubled so their slice is more. I only wish Rod Tidwell was real and playing TODAY! Get really paid my friend!
