I still miss him. He was one of a kind. I miss his comic genius, his acting, and his humanity. I heard him sing. He really did have a good voice.

I saw him during his Broadway run. I went in not expecting much from him, but he won me over. The audience LOVED him. In something as light and fluffy as "Damn Yankees," all those laughs cannot be discounted. And he brought them. Again and again. It should also be noted that during "Two Lost Souls" he stuck to his assigned business and did it straight, even while looking like he was having the time of his life. I learned a lot from watching his performance.

He was really great on Broadway. He was one kind of performer, there won't be another like him. Will miss him so much.

I saw this in San Fran wi my wife...he did twenty min of stand up one liners...my god he was quick ...one other old guy and I kept laughing none stop and I like to think he kept it going so long just for our enjoyment..I literally couldn't stop laughing ...god rest you jerry lewis, you brought me nothing but joy..

I worked this show for a week in Houston and stood on stage quite a few times. Jerry would come off the stage and go crazy! Lol! He bounced off the walls and would joke and kid around. It was pure joy watching his antics. Thank you so much for posting this. Such great memories for me. RIP Sir.

My great-uncle worked on some of Jerry Lewis’ movies at Paramount Studios as a carpenter and in miniatures. He said that Jerry Lewis never forgot any of the crew’s names. One year Jerry Lewis gifted all of the members of the crew with swing sets for their kids for Christmas.

@@jamespfitz One of his sons, Chris Lewis, has the rights to distribute JL’s movies, recordings and other material. Don’t imagine Chris is doing too badly. His sons are grown men who have made their own way. It would have been nice for JL to remember his grandkids or great grandkids in his will but we have no idea what other arrangements he may have made (or not) for any of them outside of his will.

I saw Damn Yankees at the Fox Theater in Atlanta when the show with Jerry Lewis went on the road. His entrance....he was a star! Every song, every line, every piece of business..Jerry was a singer, dancer, actor and a huge personality on and off stage. So glad I got to see him in person.

I see some raves here in the comments, with some "hates." Jerry was approached about doing this, so anyone who thought his performance was too much "Jerry" must remember that they knew what they were getting into and, really, I thought his performance stayed very close to script at all times, with him peppering in just a sprinkle here and there. He wasn't going to be Ray Walston, so why try? Trying to play it someone else's way could have totally ruined it. The only time he went into some real schtick was in the "cane" sequence in Good Old Days, and since he was alone on stage, there was no worry about sending dialog off the rails because others didn't get their cues, etc. Jerry was a consummate professional. I love this! I so wish I'd gotten to see it. RIP, Jerry ❤

Dean Martin died on Christmas day in 1995. My wife and I had tickets for this show that evening at the Denver Center and we assumed Jerry Lewis would cancel. Instead he gave a fantastic performance before hopping a plane, the most professional thing I've ever seen.

Jerry lewis was worth the price of admission.his comedy routine was pure genius.

Thank you for this posting I always wanted to see him as Applegate when he finally made it( his dad always told him he won't make it till he dose Broadway). He finally made it, I am so happy he did make it in 1986.

I saw him in London. When he did this song he added an impromptu stand up routine. A priest and a rabbi are on a plane together. The stewardess asks for their drink order. The Rabbi orders a scotch and soda. The priest says "I would sooner commit adultery than have alcohol pass these lips. The Rabbi responds "wait change my order I didn't know we had a choice.

Saw him in Dallas, I must've been 10 or 11, but I knew who Jerry Lewis was. And seeing him suddenly do stand up immediately got my attention. "Your average, every day drunk..." *stumbles around the stage* "Same drunk in an earthquake..." *casually strolls across stage* It was masterful.

A true comic genius

Thank you for sharing! I saw his performance in Damn Yankees on Broadway and was at a Wednesday matinee where there were groups of school age kids (must have been a field trip or something). In one part of the show where he was doing a monologue, he started doing some of his old shtick... "Laaadddyyyy..." and the kids were going wild! Wonderful memory!

I love Jerry Lewis.

Experienced Mr Lewis in Damn Yankees in San Francisco in 1996, I think it was. Had seen the original cast on Broadway (Victor Garber and Bebe Neuwirth).

I saw him in the show. This was the best spot in the production. I'm not a fan. But he delivered the goods in this number.Mitchell Maxwell, and Lewis both had issues and could be extremely unpleasant to be around. Maxwell's reputation is well known in Broadway circles.

Linda...You are 100% correct! I was privileged to see Ray Walston in the original Damn Yankees. Jerry Lewis was terrible! The posters who "liked" this obviously never heard the original. (Though some lyrics added were clever!)

Lewis wasn't bad, but I think Ron Spivak and Ray Walston were better. And as far as I know, neither of them stole "Two Lost Sou;s" from the Joe Hardy character.

I just don't find his type of humor funny.

I just watched Ray Walston NAIL this part (same song) but he played it "devilish" taking delight in the atrocious acts of people throughout history...Jerry sucked! Jerry brought "the Bell Boy" to the role and all of his old shtick, faces, noises, etc... Oddly enough I just watched an interview Jerry gave on Larry King discussing Damn Yankees...Larry asked Jerry "isn't it hard not to steal the spotlight and break away and do your old act...Jerry said that he had such respect for Broadway and being part of a mosaic cast that you stick to the dialog and character....so, I decided to watch Jerry's version of the Devil in Damn Yankees....and what do I see? Phukin Jerry Lewis being Phukin Jerry Lewis doing his faces, and noises etc..I was embarrassed for him and the production.

He couldn’t act or sing his way out of a paper bag.

Ray Walston was 100x better. I love Jerry but this is shit.

The song is just fine and did not need Mr. Lewis's comedy. Had sad his ego just couldn't leave good enough alone. Glad I did not pay $$ to see this 'Act'.
