Jerry Lewis was great! I was so lucky to see him in person. Brilliant actor, comedian, dancer, singer. Very generous to his fans.

Jerry seemed so pissed off.

Loved the interview but I sensed that you were slightly downplaying Dean throughout, which led to Jerry having to underline that Dean was 'the spine of the act'. At least this brought out Jerry's protective instinct and to tell you how he recognized Dean's star quality, that important catalysis, that 'seemingly' came naturally. And it was great how he admonished you when you 'projected' the Dad stuff ! Haha Brilliant all the same and Thank You.

In none of the other interviews I've seen does Jerry look so dark in the face. Here he never smiles but never at all. What happened, did he say it? I don't know but I'm afraid he and Dean didn't talk to each other again at that time. Dean (again) didn't want to talk to him anymore. Or maybe he couldn't if it is true that he was sick with Alzheimer's. And as far as their separation is concerned, I don't believe in the "official" versions at all. Dean who didn't want to wear the police uniform? He wore it in a photo shoot when he was with Jerry and also during a skit of theirs in Colgate Comedy Hour. He also wore it in The Cannonball Run II movie. And in The Delicate Delinquent he had to be a nice and very humane cop. No, all excuses. Their bond, their personal relationship, of whatever kind it was, had been broken. Something or someone divided them. Jerry broke up the couple (and not Dean), like when a husband decides to divorce when he finds out that his wife has been cheating on him.

I love this guy...This interview should be 6 parts....RIP Jerry!

I have only one complaint about Jerry…Did he really need to be such a ass to his first wife and six no I guess five sons still living? In favor of his adopted daughter and second wife! None of my business? Certainly not my business but it was so beneath him. Jerry had such a big heart. Listen in this interview she says how much Gary bragged on him. Gary said he had to sue his own father or his mom would be living on the street. I don’t know why she wouldn’t have gotten half his dough being they are in California but apparently she didn’t. Anyway that’s my only complaint with Jerry.

On all 4 parts of this interview. She guesses stuff and Jerry is like Nooooo. LMBO how Jerry ended it . 🤣🤣

My sense is that most of this is BS. Lewis enjoyed playing the introspective artist who was light years ahead of everyone. Dean Martin once said, we were in it for the money. Plain and simple.

Jerry Lewis had demons. He talks about it. He was unbelievably talented, gracious and honest in his praise of Martin. He was the driving force of Martin and Lewis. His fault, you do not abandon your children, you do not.

I agree with some of the observations he has here but it's the arrogant delivery that detracts from the message.

Very interesting to see the unedited video but I can't help but think of the beginning where the interviewer assures Jerry he will have say in what portions of the interview she will use in the piece. Did he give his say that all of this interview would be going up online for the world to see? I think it's great to see the unedited footage but I hope he had a say in it.

Exactly! And you know how many fools in this country judge him? They still judge him after his passing! It's unbelievable to me! That behavior shows you everything that it is wrong with people here...unfortunately! :(

It seems the interviewer is patronizing Jerry which is clearly easy to do to a narcissist. That crap about people going for refreshments when Dean sang is pretty low. I honestly cannot believe that as when I would peruse and watch as many videos of this pair as I could find, I would anticipate Dean's smooth as silk singing and a reprieve from the boisterous nonsense of Jerry's.

His movies that he made in the 1960s were his best work very deep stuff a very honest man this is the real genius a real deep man

My father grew up in South Philadelphia and was a childhood friend of Joey Bishop so I got to meet almost all of the rat pack. I just a little girl and they were just friends of my father. It really didn't dawn on me who they were, I was told to call them my uncles out of respect. Uncle Don, uncle Joey, Uncle Jerry..but I was just a little kid. So Carole Johnson asked me if I actually knew him..yes, I did. I've met alot of famous people. They were just friends of my father. So what! The man I met was very kind to me, a little kid.

Enjoyed his work. But this was a tormented man. My guess is narcissism layered with clinical depression.

That is what I also thought. This is a man who is clearly a narcissist. He cannot understand why everyone does not see things the way he does and gets frustrated at people because of that. He lacks empathy and perspective taking. He sizes people up and explains their behavior as a way to deflect from his own, like telling the reporter she is "projecting." How does he know that? In short, Jerry Lewis was a miserable man because he is a narcissist and in his mind nobody will ever be able to understand things as much as him.

The difference with a narcissist is that they demand perfection from others while making excuses for their own failures. Many perfectionists demand perfection from others and themselves.

I agree - my understanding is that Dean could not take it anymore and had to leave Jerry to save his sanity. Dean's friends and the industry told Dean Martin that he was committing career suicide by leaving Jerry.

Jerry is my friend ...golly gee ...that makes 10 friends in my Buick ...imagine that 🥰

He looks so sad sometimes. But as he says, his struggles to survive all that pain is what his funny bone is made of.

***** I have watched all four parts of this interview. This was great!. If it were me who gave a title to this I would call it "Jerry Lewis Unplugged". I happen to be a great fan of Jerry's. But I also realize there are many who view him as difficult. For me, I see a perfectionist who can settle for nothing less. He's not going into character for this interview..and I love it..there are no "hey lady' or comedy character screams. If I had any issue with anything he said..it would be of his attitude.."I only owe the public a great performance and nothing more". It's the exact attitude Humphrey Bogart had. So Jerry is in great company even though I feel the talent owes more to the public. but, who am I to say? Did I have to go through what he went through? Did any of us ever experience adulation with a public on a par with The Beatles and have to deal with it? In recent times, I have heard Jerry defend the Kennedy's and admit to an affair with Marylin Monroe. I have heard his son Gary wonder about his dad's thoughts and of Jerry's womanizing and alleged or actual love child(ren?). I think no less of Jerry or Gary. Life is a complex experience. Those who wish to see things in black and white will never see the technicolor involved. Whether he looked depressed or not, this was a man opening up his sole and despite what some critics may say..this was a true genius opening up. Egotistical, yeah maybe..but you can't get to where he got if you didn't have an ego! I urge those who want to have a realistic view of the history of comedy not to just listen to the shock media types who wish to exploit the revered and reduce them. Unfortunately that's what's in fashion today. Jerry Lewis is not a perfect human being - far from it. But we aren't either! And we never went through what he did and managed to make it to the top. None of us raised the money for charity as Jerry did..not Howard Stern..or any other critic. To me, unless I see something more revealing this 4 part interview was the most amazing as well as intricate insight into the nature of of one of the greatest comedians of all time. This reveals the genius behind the craziness. And it was perfect, as was this interview. Thank you! for this!..and thank you Jerry!

+steve3602 FWIW, I think the public dots not and can not owe our be owned by the public. The public well take them in and their them out with little notice, so protecting themselves is, well, it's really anyone's right to defend themselves, don't you think? Besides, if sometimes performing a million times a week, besides writing, rehearsing, and just generally doing chores, eating, etc. I get the aspect of symbiosis you might be suggesting, but he might just have said there has to be limits is all. No one actually becomes a devil or a saint just because they're pretending to be one, or both. Who knows what any public figure *really* has to deal with? You can't be all things to all people, *whoever* you are.

I really enjoyed these interviews however, the interviewer talked more than Jerry. She was very annoying as she continuously interrupted him to tell him the things that happened in his life while Jerry continuously corrected her . Jerry, annoyed, let her know it with the "your projecting" line. I found myself wanting to tell her to shut up! Thanks for sharing non the less!

***** My intention was not to offend anyone. As I originality said, I enjoyed the interview but was annoyed by the interviewer. Being I'm not an interviewer, I am aware that this may be the way it is done so my comment was out of line. As far as awards are concerned, I'm sure the piece did not air with the interviewers commentary included therefore, I'm not surprised about it's award winning status. Jerry Lewis could be a nasty sardonic and abrasive but he was able to tell you the underbelly and dark side of being in Show Business

" ...And that's why ya do comedy, kid." That story about how he was informed he was being left back in school was very sad. The experience obviously stayed with him throughout his life. Jerry the clown was often the saddest one in the room. What a beautiful, complex, intelligent man ❤

At times, he sounds just like Patrice O'Neal talking about comedy.

He oozes an air of superiority, with layers of contempt just under the surface. Great artist? You bet. Personal torture? Very obvioud

Interviewer talks too much. Questions too loaded. More attentive listening needed.

When finding a that he left nothing to his kids, and the way he was with his family?. He was a cold hearted stingy greedy person. He reminded me of Scrooge. CWA

Reminded me of my mom, including the tormenting, abuse, sexual molestation, smothering with a pillow (all these on a regular), & broken bones to heal abnormally. Never taken to the hospital, unable to have kids. I'm sick & in pain ALL year round but at least, kids has always come to my house to play games WE used to play. Red light Green light. Tag. Mother May I. Hide & Go seek. etc etc... I'm grown, however; I'm the kid that never was. AND MY LIFE IS BETTER THAN IT WAS😉

when i was a child i would pass out from laughing at his physical comedy - Jim Carrey is the closest thing to his talent for that kind of comedy. He is a sad shell of himself here. At least he is still humble and modest. ( you can laugh now)

Comedy acting is the hardest acting to do!! Serious acting is easier as life is full of ups and downs and dissapointments and that is life,looking sad is easy and shouting at camera being angry,which is all thats in the movies of today,fact🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😁😁😁even if jerry was alive today,he would agree with me!!

You would think a story like that would give him a little empathy for how he treated other people. In spite of being humiliated in such a way he turned around bullied people all of his life and treated them like garbage. The only way he could feel bad for people was if it affected him somehow. A mark of a true narcissist.

What is he eating

I like the whole chewing on the candy thing. Relaxing. Makes me drowsy.

This is sad in a way Jerry's tone reflects that in his lifetime he hasn't seen the world change very much from the disparity and suffering between the rich and the poor he's depressed here

He was an egomaniac. Public persona was a kind, caring person, concerned about disabled kids. Abusive, non-caring parent to his own children, who left all out of his will. Sad, sick, person.

Just a quibble, but Jerry can have this affectative look of equal parts boredom, gum chewing, fingers close to the face -- a-la an arrogant Ed Bradley of CBS News. Dick Van Dyke on the other hand might have been bored, but he at least smiled to make his fans feel better. Jerry just seems like an impatient little king. Still, he remains the king of comedy, kid.
