JERRY JEFF WALKER - 1972 - VINYL VERSION - GONZO MIX REMASTER

This Jerry Jeff Walker vinyl record from 1972 started it all. Recorded mostly live in Austin, TX and New York, this LP epitomizes the sound of the 'Outlaw Country' movement happening in South Texas in the early 70's. Everyone knows his record 'Viva Terlingua', released the following year and mostly recorded live at Luckenbach, TX but this self-titled record is equally great. In fact, it's a prime example of Jerry Jeff's mantra - Ragged but Right - and it stands the test of time as one of his best albums.
The audio and images in this video are from my personal copy of this album, for personal use and commentary only. Up until recently, this entire album had never really been available on any streaming platforms, and I presume that is due to some sort of legal entanglements with the master recordings. However, in the weeks following Jerry Jeff's passing, this album, has appeared on Spotify. My original intent with this 'remastered' version was to use Audacity software to boost the audio levels and make them more equalized. It’s an aggressive mix so it get a little ‘hot’ in some areas, but the end result is a version of this record that has a much higher volume levels... plus this version has the vintage feel because you can still hear the subtle 'cracks and pops' of a vinyl record. THIS IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR LISTENING TO THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS. (GIVE UMG & GEFFEN THEIR MONEY BY PURCHASING OR STREAMING THIS MUSIC ON PLATFORMS WHERE IT'S AVAILABLE) The original master seems to be very loud in some areas, and very quiet in others - and with a uniformly low overall volume level, almost as if the mastering of the original recording had been rushed. I’m no sound expert - but I dig this record immensely and have for decades. It deserves a re-issue and a proper listen. Why it’s become somewhat forgotten is beyond me. In my opinion, it is one of the brightest spots in Jerry Jeff’s entire discography, yet it’s been swept under the rug somehow. I hope this vid stays on here but have a bad feeling the legal hawks are gonna descend upon this and take it down... again... Until then, enjoy!

@@jaylamar55 It was a long time ago ago and there was a bunch of drinking, smoking, and snorting. So recollections are cloudy! Let's see, We started at around midnight and went all night. I remember staggering out into the , brilliant, blistering, blasting, August NYC bustle after playing all night in the dark and cool studio. Quite a shock to the system. Another strong memory involves Jerry Jeff's recording style as it related to my (then and now) musical partner, Patterson Barrett. Even at our young age, we were fairly seasoned and knew the importance of lead instruments staying out of each other's way. So, ( I think it was on "Curly and 'Lill"), we were talking about who would take which fills and where. Jerry Jeff wasn't having any of that, got a little agitaded. It was way too much organization for him! That may have played a part in the weaknesses (as well as the strengths) of the record. It's hard enough to mix a live in the studio record because all the mics leak into all the other mics. Back then, editing was done with a razor and scotch tape, so you couldn't just edit the fills and solos so they don't compete. I'm all for live in the studio, but I would never approach it without some discussion of fills and solos. Mixing at Electric Ladyland was pretty awesome.

@@graymansblues Thanks for sharing those memories! I've heard other musicians talk about that same feeling of recording around the clock in NYC studios for extended periods of time and then being thrust back into the busy city. I can imagine that's a fairly jarring contrast of settings. The lines you and Patterson play on this record are, in my opinion, some the iconic hooks that really make the songs shine. Specifically some of the harmonica parts... I used to see Jerry Jeff play live here in Texas and when he'd play these songs without a harmonica player... I could still hear those lines in my head, ya know? L.A. Freeway comes to mind for sure. I can definitely see how his 'ragged but right' approach could be a double edged sword in the studio but I think you guys pulled it off. The looseness is probably the aspect I adore the most about this recording. Frustrating for studio musicians for sure... but the end result reflects the high-caliber of the musicians on the session in the fact that that you guys could make it sound cohesive even if there was no solid plan laid out in advance. Electric Ladyland must have been amazing!

Left Houston Texas in 1976 as a frustrated Gulf Coast surfer, headed for any beach place I could live south of LA (and knowing not a soul there, and with no job prospects). Stopped by Luckenbach on the way and saw the JJW Viva Terlingua posting on the barn door. Had a beer and continued west in my 1973 GMC van with my old 8-track beltin' out these JJW tunes, punctuated with some Allman Bros, and some jazz. All the other 20 somethings I hung with in Newport Beach didn't have a clue what this music was about. But some of 'em got infected later on. Over the years I made trips back to Gruene Hall to see JJW and even went to Camp Belize in the early 2000's. After many years now, I just don't know whether to sing or cry every time I listen to this guy. It's a complex mix of joy and nostalgia that I cannot control.😪😊

This is coming from a guy with 5,000+ albums in my collection. My heart sings, dances and cries when I hear it. There are so many deep personal memories embedded within for me. There was a time when I listened to the thing 2 a day, maybe more. I love Jerry Jeff Walker dearly and to me this is the apex of his career. Thanks for the heartfelt comment Francis! Although wasn’t even born until 1974, I feel the exact same way about this album. Creative statements, such as this one, can become so ingrained in our psyche that they almost become part of our identity… because we identify with them so deeply. JJW’s music was like that for many people. There are many others for sure, but his cuts deep. I would agree 100% that this album along with Viva Terlingua is his absolute definitive period of output. I saw Jerrry Jeff and the Lost Gonzo Band at Texas Tech in 1976. I had been wearing out my _Viva Terlingua_ LP for months. The show was _mostly_ laid back and smooth, however..... When Gary P Nunn was singing _London Homesick Blues_ his lips touched the big chrome microphone they had. He got zapped in the lips by a jolt of electricity and instantly moved backwards a few feet and shouted several words that were not in the lyrics. The audience made a big laugh mixed with a groan....we all imagined being him at the time.

Hi, Bob. First, we really enjoyed hearing you and Bradley Kopp in Horseshoe Bay last week...such a great time! But I hope you can clear up something that's been confusing me. What's the deal with Mickey Raphael being shown as Mickey Raipheld on this LP and on "¡Viva Terlingua!"? @@FireAntGazette thanks for mentioning this!! I’ve always wondered if it was another guy that looked just like Raphael or if it was actually Mickey and they misspelled his name. One theory I’ve always had was that, due to him possibly being locked into a record deal with Willie Nelson, maybe he wasn’t legally allowed to appear on anyone else’s recorded albums. As a result, maybe they just misspelled his name to conceal his identity. Would love to hear Cosmic Bob’s take on this, but he still hasn’t responded to my original reply asking for a few stories. Maybe someday he’ll just breeze back in here and drop the answers on us. Until then…

Yup, this one and the Mr. Bojangles album with Bromberg on Atlantic. I also like Viva Terlingua w/ Gary Nunn and Los Gonzos although it anticipated Jimmy Buffett whose channeling of JJW's party hearty side (which Terlingua really brought out) got tiresome (and also Garth Brooks who tried to fake the feel of Terlingua on Low Places.) Jerry Jeff was an evolved folkie who could hang with the country guys but he wasn't country in the sense that Waylon, Willie, Haggard or even Dylan were. He was a New Yorker, not a Southerner or hillbilly -- an adopted Texan but not a born and bred one. So this album really plays to his strengths as a musical traveler. And yes, the Guy Clark songs -- LA Freeway and That Old Time Feeling -- are great ones.

Thanks for mentioning 'other material'.... I actually just saw today someone mentioned that 'Walker's Collectibles' is also unavailable in it's entirety on any streaming platform... When I first, and subsequently played this great album, found the production raw and had a live feel to it. A few years' ago, read an interesting interview with Lloyd Maines. He didn't play pedal steel on this ,at least according to the credits. He said Jerry Jeff was very impatient when recording. Not for him the endless Nashville polished and multi take recording style. In the studio and maybe 5 takes with no endless days spent with the musicians he would record with. Wouldn't allow studio musicians. Just another way that Jerry Jeff was his own man musically and contributed to his special sound. Of couse later epitomized when he and Susan established Tried and True music. Had full control of Jerry's sound.

So Jerry Jeff went traveling with Mahan on the rodeo circuit. Jerry Jeff is hanging with the cowboys in a hotel room after an event and before he knows it the cowboys, one in particular have an issue. Jerry Jeff is going to get his ass whupped. One of them riders has a bone to pick, it seems Jerry Jeff has dissed the cowboy's grandpa in the song "Charlie Dunn". Grandpa it turns out is Buck who works up front, and "never understood the good things Charlie done". Jerry Jeff says he escaped with no time to spare but others tell it different- that Jerry Jeff got his ass stomped, last seen yelling from the ground he ended up on to the cowboys as they strode back to their rooms "Hell you ain't so tough! I been beat up worse by bikers!" True? False? We'll never know.

I am going to gloat objectionably but maybe informatively. I have the Raven records cd 'expanded issue' of this. Raven, unusually, based in Australia. Tracks include two gems namely Song For The Life and Leavin' Texas. They also issued Walker's Collectables including the album Ridin' High with killer track John Prines' Mississippi on My Mind. Also sadly passed recently. They completed this treasured trifecta with Its a Good Night For Singling and Collectibles. The former has the gorgeous Couldn't Do Nothing Right. and Won't You Give Me One More Chance. Regrettably Amazon rates only one of these cds as still available. I play them with Desperado just as I did in the old days except the remastered version of the latter includes Saturday Night but I don't recall the original issue including that wondrous song and sorry to see Glyin Johns replaced by Azoff to produce. I didn't realize Jerry Jeff was also once part of the L.A. scene as Linda Ronstadt makes frequent discreet if that was needed though her style in her great bio Simple Dreams. Listening to her Mexican songs lately. Also love the Marshall Tucker Band. All ignored by the Ken Burns doco as was Marty Robbins.

Old enough to get served a few beers in a mountain town bar along the way. Jerry Jeff knew the ‘70s were a free time. Those two albums led me to a lot of musicians through connections. JJW was definitely the center of my music appreciation universe.

@@frankhanson5974 Yep, Silver Mountain, thats it! It's crazy to think about your life changing road trip in regard to the fact I was born in '74 and didn't see JJW live until the late 90's. It's uncanny how the music almost finds us, and always at just the right time in our lives, as opposed to the other way around. Hopefully Jerry Jeff's music will continue to 'find people' for generations to come.
