An artist who spent his whole life improving and polishing his gorgeous gift. He loved and respected the art of singing with great honesty through his performances, his music and his books. This kind of artists made the world better. One of the greatest basses ever.

Excellent; thanks for this rarity. It's a shame that the full opera isn't available like this but they didn't do performances just for the camera too much in those days. I have been for some time seeking out the few Russian excerpts of the opera with Hines. There aren't many singers whose Boris I like though Hines is at the top of the list.

Joseph Shore: It is the very rarity which makes one wish to know more about it. So were was this performance? The horns do not sound either Russian or French. Yet the French introduction would lead one to believe it might be at the Operá. It is a magnificent performance! The Shuisky is as oily as they come, someone for Jerry to really play against! So who was he?? That's a really legitimate question. The Jerry Hines I knew - and we were good friends - was generous in acknowledging the singers with whom he worked. So my request is to emulate our friend: if you know, tell us; and if you don't know, just say so. If you take this as an attack, then you are incorrect. It is the very opposite. He was the finest Boris because he knew how to inhabit a role. Thanks for these films showing him as much a great actor as he was a great singer.

Are you Paul Somers the voice teacher? This video is courtesy of Jim Sardos, Hines' agent. It is from the French CBC. Alan Crowfoot was the Shisky. The other particulars I don't know. I didn't put much info about it because of the way I got it. In this era Jerry sang many scenes, fully costumed and staged for the CBC just to air on the TV. If you are an American imagines that, a culture where opera was considered a programmable item. Thanks to the CBC we have a good record of Jerry's work.

No, I was not a voice teacher. I was a music reviewer for the Star-Ledger. Wearing that hat I covered many OMTI presentations. I also conducted some opera and ballet, as well as being a professional continuo harpsichordist. Jerry was impressed that I was a reviewer who was also an actual musician. It turned out that we lived only about 3-4 miles apart, so I visited him, sometimes with my son, a math/physics whiz. As you can imagine this intrigued Jerry. Since those days, my son earned a PhD in physics from U. Penn, which would not have surprised Jerry.

Dear Mr Shore many thanks for posting performances of great Hines, one of my favorite bassos. I have a question. Hines sung Boris at Bolshoi in 1962 October (during the Cuban missile crisis and Krushchev was among the audience). Basing on material available, rather unavailable in YT, it seems this historical performance has not been recorded. Any idea?

That was the choice of the Soviet government. I think they were too bust with the Cuban missile crisis to worry about recording Boris. Hines was selected by Khruschev as a back channel to communicate with Kennedy, sidestepping the press. Khruschev stayed for the entire opera, something unheard of for him--he usually left after the first act. After the show Khruschev was taken back stage to talk to Hines alone. Hine spoke Russian very well. Khruschev said in Russian to Hines, "No vy ochen vysokiy," You are very tall. With three inch heals Hines stood 6'9 and a half inches. Then he gave Kennedy a secret message that Hines could never tells. He was debriefed when he got off the plane in New York and signed a national security agreement never to speak about it, and he didn't. Not even to his kids.
