Boris Godunov - Coronation scene (Bryn Terfel; The Royal Opera)

Ойын-сауық

Bryn Terfel as the tormented Tsar Boris in Richard Jones's production of Musorgsky's magnificent opera. Subscribe to our channel and find out more at www.roh.org.uk/productions/bo...
Boris Godunov is one of the most dramatically rewarding bass-baritone roles: a noble ruler who loves his children and his people, but whose thirst for power has led him to commit a terrible crime. Musorgsky traces the Tsar's downfall with psychological acuity, from the nobility of his Coronation to his tragic end in one of opera's most affecting death scenes. Other highlights include the stirring chorus that opens and closes the Coronation Scene (based on a Russian folksong), Pimen's austere monologue in Scene 7 and the comic interlude with the monks Varlaam and Missail in Scene 4. Richard Jones's insightful production reflects the conflict between Boris's public persona and his private guilt through a set in which the murder of the Tsarevitch Dmitry is ritually re-enacted in a high vaulted room.
Musorgsky was inspired to compose Boris Godunov after reading Pushkin's Shakespeare-inspired play of the same name. He completed his first version of the opera in 1869, but it was rejected by the Imperial Theatres Directorate due to its lack of lyricism and significant female characters. Musorgsky's revised 1872 version - which contained more formal arias, several additional characters and a new act - received its premiere in 1874 at the Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg. The Royal Opera performs the composer's original version, which has a predominantly naturalistic and declamatory vocal style, and in which the story remains focused on Boris throughout.

As a Russian person, I can say that this scene is really nice! I think that Boris Godunov's character is really fit to Bryn Terfel (expect that Boris was a little bit younger during coronation in 1598). I love so much decorations and first part of the scene, it looks very Russian by its composition! Brilliant voices, brilliant singers-actors. One thing, which makes it worse than it should be, is... ah, clothes. The priests are dressed rather not in Russians, but in Byzantine outfits, but the strangest thing is undoubtedly the costumes of boyars, dressed in... sorry, in costumes of the 21st century? Honestly, this is actually very strange. Most likely it was the original idea, to make the costumes more modern, but they absolutely do not reflect any Russian flavor of this opera, and they look a little ridiculous in comparison with Boris's clothes straight from the 16-17 centuries. In any case, everything else is just wonderful, it is very pleasant that the Royal Opera House paid attention to the heritage of our culture, thank you so much^^

I realize there's an importance of theater, but there's also a real event that occurred with real people at a particular time in history. Part of the power is also showing ambivalence, which there doesn't appear to be any directed here. I think the cast and orchestra sound stellar but I just disagree with some costumes and the way the characters are being told to act - it takes out the human side of the occurrence.

Interesting that this publicity clip ends just before Boris sings. I would have thought it would ideal to include, but I suppose it would be quite long. If I was editing it I would have started it in the chorus just before Boris sings rather than the whole orchestral prelude as we have. Anyway! Shame, as I would like to hear Terfel sing it from their archival footage. (hint hint, ROH people).

Ok, i can understand - this is theatrical performance of russian costumes, but it is soooo important now in Europe to represent other cultures correctly. I can imagine how society will eat you alive if you dare to represent african/asian culture in a wrong way. So why are you showing Russian culture so poorly?? Why are modern smokings there in 16 century?! Why do priests wear jester's outfits?! After this even the most expensive and talented performance looks funny and ugly. Sorry!
