Michael had the top of his head burned off in the 1984 Pepsi commercial. It was still painful for him in 2009. He had multiple scalp surgeries to assist with this but the pain would not subside. Combine that pain, with the trauma and abuse he endured as a child (from his father and the music industry) in addition to the lies and stress thrown at him in 1993 and 2005 with the false allegations and its a miracle the man lived to 50. He was a fragile and sensitive human being and turned to pain medication to help him get through all of this.

As Carrie Fisher wrote in her book Shockaholic, Michael was not addicted to Propofol. There’s no high, it’s anesthesia, so there is just nothingness. I had always thought this, and when I discovered Carrie’s book, and read…well, listened to, I got the audiobook because she narrates it…her say what I’d been thinking, I was like, “THANK YOU!” I think I literally shouted it out loud. Any symptoms Michael was having was mostly due to lack of sleep. You are not sleeping when you are being given Propofol, or any anesthesia, you are basically unconscious, and there’s a difference. When you sleep you cycle through light sleep, deep sleep, and R.E.M. sleep (the sleep phase where you dream.) R.E.M. sleep in necessary for your brain to function properly, and you do not go into R.E.M. sleep while under anesthesia. Some of the symptoms of lack of R.E.M. sleep, no matter what causes it, include appearing drunk, confusion, paranoia, possibly hallucinations, and there are probably others. Ultimately, you can die from a lack of sleep in general and R.E.M. sleep in particular (in fact, I did read one article back in 2009 that said if Conrad Murray hadn’t of OD’d MJ, he might have died due to the lack of R.E.M. sleep. Michael had a real use for pain medication and regular sleeping pills. Between the burns to his scalp (and the repeated surgeries over the years to treat that area) and the injuries he sustained in another mishap on stage that left him with severe bruising to his back, a broken vertebrae, or other injury (depending on which account of the incident you read), he would have been a chronic pain patient. Plus he had Lupus. MJ unfortunately had to have a reconstructive surgery on his scalp right before the first allegations against him were made. Probably without even realizing what he was doing, he took the pain meds given him after the surgery to numb the emotional pain he was feeling at that time, and that led to an addiction. Had MJ not had to deal with allegations so awful at the same time he had pain meds for legit reasons, he might not have become addicted. What he really needed for the insomnia was to be treated at a sleep clinic, to find the root cause, but it didn’t become an issue until This Is It rehearsals, when he could not get by on the little sleep he was getting. Based on the book by the security guards who became his friends, Bill and Jevon (don’t remember the last names) MJ didn’t sleep much, but there was nothing odd going on in MJ’s room, like a doctor always there, and IV poles and crap in there. And maybe he wasn’t. You can take more pain meds than you should, need to be weaned off them just like an addict would because your body can react badly when a substance is removed. It doesn’t even have to be additive. I take a med to prevent migraines that is not addicting, it’s not a controlled substance. But, it can be dangerous to abruptly stop taking it, I could have a seizure. There was conflicting information about his use of pain meds at the time of his death, but I believe he had none in system when he died. He had anti-anxiety meds that are often used to treat stress-induced insomnia. He had the Propofol of course, and meds for an enlarged prostate, pretty typical problem for a man of his age. All this went down at a time when doctors were starting to be held accountable for giving pain meds to patients who are abusing them, which in many cases is warranted. So I think rather than come forward and say, “i am Dr. So-and-So and I was treating MJ for this problem or that problem, and he legit needed pain meds, because he was genuinely in pain,” they just kept quiet. Except his dermatologist, who did give him Demerol at one point, one of those times MJ was coping with real pain, and likely starting to have problems getting it. He had to go to the office to get the meds, meaning that because of MJ’s past issues with misuse he was being monitored by a doctor. Because at some point, people who are recovering addicts are going to need pain meds. As you get older, you need surgery. it’s inevitable. You think they do heart surgery and send you home with Tylenol because you’re a former addict? And he had Lupus. I think that condition causes pain sometimes. _Everyone should also remember that addiction is a disease, an illness, and not a moral failing. That also seems to get lost in all this._

This just goes to show how dark and awful the dark side of fame can be for many celebs. On paper, you'd think Michael won at life: he was born with above average looks, incredible voice, charismatic personality, intelligence, and countless talents. None of this, however, takes into account how fame, greed, and constant media attention can seriously damage a human being (especially artists who are often also extremely sensitive). It's like living in a gilded cage. You have unlimited access to so many things and yet you're exiled to a life in isolation. Many of the people in your inner circle are there just because they're on your payroll, not necessarily because they care. Sounds like a nightmare to me.

If you listen to some of his albums closely to certain songs, Michael is telling the world what is going on in the industry. It's sad how the President of the United States allows this to go on. Of course he was an addict-and thank you for not parroting the others who are so deep in denial -and blaming everybody but Michael. If Michael wanted to get clean and straighten out his life he would have done so. His celebrity was not his problem-if that were true than every superstar would be an addict. The problem was two-fold...apparent childhood trauma that he never properly addressed and not having the sense and courage to remove himself from the sycophants that he surrounded himself with. All of them on his payroll that wouldn't confront him because they wanted to remain on the payroll. Jermaine is a perfect example here in this interview-his denial is so deep that even after the man's death from a drug overdose, he refuses to cop to him being an addict. He talks about his brother hiring an anesthesiologist like it's the most normal thing in the world-dear God this guy is an absolute moron. And to all of the people kvetching about the interviewer-I don't think anyone put a gun to Jermaine's head...the pay was enough convincing for him.

@@ellensiniscalchi1482 People can even say he straightened out in 1993, but it was a different time, he had different people around that weren't around anymore in 2009 and addiction is an ongoing battle. It's a process. Some people act like after rehab in late 1993, he wasn't addicted anymore. He was on the process of recovery and unfortunately he returned to his issue. The doctors around Michael were so freaking shady as well. The plastic surgeon, the anesthesiologists, the dermatologist. Wtf was going on? No one in his camp did anything for decades. And after what happened, Michael wasn't an addict in their eyes. He was so addicted to so many things that strong anti-anxiety and sleeping pills weren't working -- that's what you call an addiction.

When MJ asked Deepak Chopra for IV medication to put him to sleep and help him with his pain Deepak refused and told him that his pain and illnesses were intrinsic rather that physical and that's how he should treat it. but at that point MJ was so dependent on medications he didn't even let himself seek for other options.

@@globalcitizenn I'm sorry, but to say Michael didn't willingly change his appearance is delusional. Its VERY clear he had multiple plastic surgeries and suffered from BDD ever since childhood. He was bullied for his nose by his father, and that spiraled in an obsession with his appearance. He has said numerous times he never looked into mirrors, that's a deeply serious issue with ones appearance not a simple "insecurity." There's also a recording of him on the phone comparing himself to a "lizard". There's nothing wrong with him having plastic surgery or suffering from BDD, so there's no sense in trying to pretend he didn't.

I never knew MJ had a serious drugs problem, though I felt his physical transformation would give him trouble. But just like Cissy Houston staged an intervention to obtain a court order trying to save Whitney, somebody should have attempted the same on MJ. Yeah it's called having your scalp burned and living in constant pain... it's called living with lupus and vitiligo and the media constantly putting you under scrutiny about your appearance. Its called doing good humanitarian and charitable works and caring for children and the rest of humanity and then having people you helped stab you in the back and accuse you of things because you didn't give them exactly what they wanted. It's called not being able to sleep due to a years long bout of insomnia. Jermaine should keep his damned mouth shut because that was private family business. Certainly not the publics and definitely not the medias . The remaining Jacksons of Michaels generation are Parasites. Michael was the draw and they continue to use his drawing power by speaking his name to get attention by whatever means. That is why Michael stopped talking to them .it had nothing to do with drugs. He hated his family...except his mother who manipulated him into doing the victory tour with his brothers even though he did not want to. If she hadn't done that he wouldn't have made the ad that burned his head that led to all the problems in the first place.

I'd rather believe them, but unfortunately they were too young to understand about his medications or how he took it so I don't really think they know how these medicines physiologically contributed to his death but they definitely know the circumstances that made him take all those medicines, his gruelling rehearsals, his nightime crying on his children's shoulders saying "they'll kill me". The problem is, his children never explicitly discussed his death ever and I don't blame them for that. The point is: they're the only ones that can actually give us the truth.

Also, don't forget when the "altar" he stood on during an Earth Song performance in 1996 fell down, which lead to further chronic pain. Tons of regular people get addicted to strong painkillers all the time. The fact that Michael also happened to get addicted, doesn't make him a bad person or anything like that. He probably also used them to numb emotional pain. I think almost any person would do that if they experienced what he did.

I think Michael Jackson was tremendously strong individual both mentally and physically (he could dance in his 50's as if he was in his 30s at least). I don't think he was ,,drug addict'' as media present him due to his death. He wasn't into drugs in classical sense, i.e. taking heroin, cocaine etc. such drugs celebrities take (and many died by overdose). Michael was in constant pain, he had to take painkillers to function. The bad thing thou is that he got addicted to use them through years, instead of stopping it on time. He was comforting his emotional and physical damage due to all the torture and horror he went through (physically - since Pepsi commercial, psychically - since false accusations of child molestation) and honestly who in his position wouldn't need something to comfort themselves when feeling pains every day?! I don't mean to justify using painkillers, I am only pointing out the factors causing it, with an understanding towards man. It was escape, but not for fun (as 90% superstars do with money they have), but rather as surviving auto-pilot mode. Dangerous thing was that he was surrounded by wrong individuals (Deepak was not one of them, he was one of the good ones who cared for his wellbeing, wanting to help him) , greedy, money-hungry who only thought how to take advantage of him and not caring about him at all. In the end these people killed him. The propofol overdose caused by ,,dr.'' Conrad was not coincidence, I am sure. They wanted him dead.

Dr. Murray should still be in jail. To leave Michael unattended in his home in this drug is totally irresponsible. In the OR, a patient on propofol is consistently monitored by the anesthesiologist. Totally unethical practice of medicine!

Was he in that much pain or was it depression. Depression can cause pain. It’s definitely more to the story that meets the eye. Only the ones that were with him and the one above can justify the events that occurred. I pray that his children will continue to be a shining light of his legacy and not get steered in the wrong direction.

Exactly that was my point. They made him look like drug addict, but he wasn't like cocaine, heroin drug addict etc that celebrities overdose. He took it as a survival mode to function due to many injurious and such pain he couldn't handle without pills. Not justifying it, but I mean if people would be in his situation, living his life, frankly the majority wouldn't make it to their 30', 40s max, let alone 50's.

I know “what ifs” don’t solve anything after the fact, however, I wonder how things would have turned out if his family were to basically to a temporary guardianship and put him in rehab to detox. That could have possibly killed him too. The point is that there were so many people that saw Michael was struggling why didn’t anyone from his team or his family save him from himself?

If I were Michael I would take it aswell. Murray did not have enough back up equipment to help MJ's heart start beating again. The question is Why didn't he?

Everybody blames everyone and even Michael blamed a fair amount of ppl for whatever things happened to him. Truth is the health system that was supposed to keep him healthy failed him. That's the American health system for you, where all it matters is money. Any pain you have get a bunch of opioids easily prescribed and feel fine at home, nevermind you end up addicted to them and with withdrawal symptoms when you are no longer prescribed. From what I gathered, he was in a lot of pain for a long time after the tour that got him burnt, I'm sure he was prescribed a bunch of things that in the end got him very hooked and as a rich person full of "yes people" around him it was obvious he was gonna end with his very personal "pusher" (the infamous doctor) in his home.

Same with Elvis, same with many stars yes. Prince the same . Opiates really do help you get through a harsh life when you are sensitive and have depression also. I'm in the same position so I know. I have chronic pain and I'm sensitive too like MJ, so the weak opiates I'm prescribed help me cope with life but they've destroyed my body , my health. I try to wean off them all the time but fail. What happened to Michael was inevitable. People should realise though that it was probably his soul contract to leave the body at age 50. He did what he came here to do. It's the kids that suffer though. If he'd lived to be 55 or 60 imagine how rough he would've looked with all the aging , makeup a surgery and facial fillets. Would've been a bit very nice memory of him. It's good he went when he did.

Often in the past performers have been tragic figures. A lot of the truly great people have suffered or died because of pressure and drugs, especially liquor . It's so sad. You feel cheated as a fan that you didn't get to watch them evolve as they grew older. One can't help wondering what performances Marilyn Monroe would have put in or what Jimi Hendrix might have done in the 1980s Quoted from Michael Jackson book Autobiography Moonwalk
