Jeremy Narby | My life as a white vampire: Gringos, Amazonians and the antidote of reciprocity

In the last 20 years a new generation of Westerners have arrived in the Amazon in search of shamanic experiences and healing. From an Amazonian perspective, this surprises no one - that gringos should be in search of something in the Amazon. What's different this time is that they haven't come to extract gold or material wealth, but want to heal and learn, and are even willing to pay for it.
Jeremy Narby's talk at the 2019 World Ayahuasca Conference explores the practice of extracting knowledge from the Amazon, reflecting on how Western people tend to end up in vampiric relations with indigenous Amazonian people despite their best intentions. He asks: how can Western ayahuasca drinkers and scientists engage in a more balanced and reciprocal relationship with indigenous Amazonians?

We took their gold, take their forests,...and now we come for their plants, medicine, knowledge too. But one thing we can't take from others, when we lack it ourselves: a soul.

It is encouraging that Dr. Narby recognizes the imbalance and desires to harmonize it.

Excellent presentation, thank you. 🙏🏽 The world will be a different place when we embrace true reciprocity as a way of being in relationship with the earth and with each other. May we get there sooner than later ✨

Thank you for sharing this important lesson from the indigeneous peoples of the Amazon. One can generalize the principle of reciprocity to anything we extract from Mother Earth. By giving up something valuable for what we extract we can destroy the vampire we are now. Reciprocity would make us seperate our needs from our wants and show respect to those we received it from. This would turn the irresponsible and destructive ‘little brother’ into a custodian of Mother Earth. Let’s see where we can apply the principle of reciprocity anywhere in our own lives and take responsibility for our needs and forget about our wants.

Maybe the general tendency to extract comes as a byproduct of the tendency for overbearing, restrictive laws
