Jeremy Irons' biography:
After training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Irons began his acting career on stage in 1969. His first major film role came in 1981 with The French Lieutenant’s Woman, for which he received a BAFTA nomination in 1982. In the same year, Irons also received a BAFTA nomination for perhaps his best-known performance, as Charles Ryder in the multi-BAFTA-winning television series Brideshead Revisited. Irons made his New York debut in 1984 and won a Tony Award for his Broadway performance opposite Glenn Close in The Real Thing.
In 1990, Irons played accused murderer Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune, winning multiple awards for his performance, including an Oscar for Best Actor. Other film credits include The Mission (1986), Dead Ringers (1988), Die Hard: With A Vengeance(1995), Lolita (1997), The Lion King (1997), Being Julia (2004), Appaloosa (2008), and award-winning independent feature Margin Call (2011).
Irons’ most recent films include High-Rise (2015), the JG Ballard adaptation from director Ben Wheatley; The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016), directed by Matthew Brown; Race (2016), directed by Stephen Hopkins, based on the true story of Jesse Owens and the 1936 Olympics; and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), directed by Zack Snyder, playing Alfred Pennyworth. In December 2016, Irons stars alongside Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, directed by Justin Kurzel.
