The German Nix(German name for Nøkken) and his Scandinavian counterparts were males. The German Nixe was a female river mermaid. Btw. the English name Neck.

Stephany J. Nøkken is usually not depicted feminine. And it can transform Into other shapes to, often it transformes Into a white beautiful horse, so that it can lure people to sit on its back, so it can ride it into the waters again and drown them. I believe its more of a spiritual form, a consept maybe, but surely have similarities to other mythical beeings. Like mermeids, nymphs, kappa and so on.
