Jenny Humphrey Style Analysis: Identity Formation & Fashion Evolution

In this video, I'll be doing a style analysis on Jenny Humphrey from Gossip Girl. I'll be breaking down the psychology of her style evolution utilizing Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development to explain the interrelation of social factors, individual thoughts, and behaviors to the fashion that she is drawn to.
Through this, we can understand how Jenny's personal style depicts her journey of identity formation and developing a sense of direction towards her own goals, beliefs, and individuality as she navigates the world of the Upper East Side and pursues a career in the fashion industry.

@@yukijames1321 I think the punk look too can also be a rejection of the preppy culture and Blair in general as a symbol. Punk literally was a rejection and anti form of fashion so it does made alot sense for her to adopt that style as a character to be defiant in the preppy snobby culture around her. addition to integrating Taylor's style. It helped her character stand out from their rich kid preppy social circle enhancing her forcing people to see her and not a blair clone

I personally think Jenny's storyline was carrying this show at one point. Hot take- Jenny is an amazing character. -Amazing style choices from beginning to end -She is an interesting character unlike other characters (like Serena) -All the other characters have done questionable things. I'm not saying that Jenny is morally correct, but is it really fair to say that Blair is a queen (and she is) but Jenny is a monster? Blair has done A LOT of really bad things. And y'all simping over Chuck Bass. We obviously he has done bad things, but did you forget that he literally tried to RAPE Jenny in the pilot episode? And blackmail Serena to get in her pants? They are all "morally challenged", but Jenny gets all the hate. I get how she is unlikeable. But how are the other characters any different? Didn't she at least try to change? (that went down the drain when she came back ik) Plus, her and Blair are business partners now so I mean she has definitely changed. So in conclusion, Jenny is a good character and Vanessa is who we should all hate

Both start off as a copycat of the queen bee (Blair in GG, Alison in PLL), go through multiple style identities throughout their character development, rebel against that world, and eventually come back around to a style that suits their identity.

In the third season, she has no choice but to become Queen Bee. Her new affluent status and Blair’s constant monitoring of Jenny to see if she’s damaging the reputation she left at Constance Billard, gave Jenny no choice but to accept the Queen Bee role.

When I was 13 the "emo" trend was going full blast and I experimented with my hair and clothing. Unfortunately my narcissistic parent didn't want for me to develop my own personality and thus banned me from expressing myself through fashion or makeup. They would call me a wh*re for wearing red lipstick, or tanktops. It was actually very degrading and destroyed me as a person to the point that even as an adult I don't feel valid in my own existence. I really appreciated no matter how much Jenny's makeup turned Rufus off, he never called her names, or forced her to change. It just really pisses me off that parents can hurt their children like that and not even care.

@@yukijames1321 Well, She's not adult after all. Plus literally EVERY1 in the show made bad things to their family and friends. You think knowing EXACLTY what you want during your teenage is an easy thing? Serena was confused between Dan and Nate. Blair in season 5 played between Chuck and Louis. And the list will go on. Yes she did bad things but it was Blair who took out her dark side.

@@yukijames1321 Being ambitious, cutting out toxic people like Agnes, and executing a guerrilla style fashion show aren’t necessarily bad things. That just shows she knows what she’s doing and not afraid to do what she wants. She falls victim because although she’s not “poor”, she herself feels that way and feels as if she’s beneath the Upper East Siders, which makes her do anything she can to not feel that way. Again, you can chalk this up to her being this evil character, or you can realize that there are more external factors that affect her as a person. The external factors change people like Jenny because those factors are out of our/her control; she simply has to either adapt or “die”, which is how we humans are wired.

@@yukijames1321 she also tried to be a nice Queen Bee (e.g. She gave a speech to all the Constance Billard girls in her first day of being Queen Bee, letting them know that there was to be no more hierarchy and no more letting people control you). However, the external factors (the minions and Blair) ruined this new positive era that Jenny was trying to establish. She knew she couldn’t fight back since Blair had too much influence on the “social order” and she had to either fall victim to being bullied and humiliated or become this mean Queen Bee in order for her not to regress back to season 1/2 Jenny.

@@yukijames1321 as for her dad, he was always on her ass for any little thing she did. He held double standards, letting Dan do whatever he wanted, but being vigilant and controlling towards anything Jenny wanted to do. So that obviously strained their relationship. And Dan, as we know, is Gossip Girl, so how could Jenny develop a strong positive relationship with her brother, if her own brother was out to ruin the lives of those she interacted with? Not a very good role model if you ask me. Neither her dad, her mom (who abandoned them) or her brother were good role models; so it shouldn’t surprise anyone why she became the way she did.

Hi, thanks for another great video. I'd like to make one suggestion and I hope it doesn't come off as rude! I love your video essays in both script and editing. However, the narration is difficult to listen to because a comma and a full stop sounds the same. I'm hearing the same amount of tone and pause for both. Because of this, a lot of great points in the video can be lost because the viewer isn't sure to get ready to the next one or if we're still listening to the old sentence! Hope we get to see more great content!

when i first watched GG, a few years back, i absolutely hated Jenny. but after rewatching it again i could see so much of myself in her. especially when i was 16. trying to fit in, her artistic expression, rebellion from her family, her feelings. really made me feel for her. not a huge fan of the rock style, i don’t hate it but i thought the long platinum blonde didn’t fit her, although i can respect how unique and genius it is.
