Thank you for all your attention to the detail of Rowland's guitar paying. Simplicity is deceptive. Such a fabulous song ~ R's younger brother Harry. PS I think he is playing through a Musicman 212 on this.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Harry! Totally agree about the deceptive simplicity of many of Rowland's parts. And thanks for the info on the amp - you get a glimpse of it at one point in the documentary, but I could identify what it was. (by the way, really enjoyed seeing you at the excellent RFH show in London a while back.)

Harry thank you again for the "This guitar belongs to Rowland S Howard" book. You sending it personally and the speed of turn around was so appreciated. It's one of my favorite things I own and it was extra special coming from you. So thank you again.
Such a killer riff. Rowland was on fire with the stuff he was cooking up during the Birthday Party. So wild.
In the past through your channel you introduced me to the band Pavement and now it’s The Birthday Party. This is some really great and interesting stuff. You have an eclectic taste in the music that you appreciate and share.

Loved the lesson and the incredible documentary recommendation. I can see why you wanted to teach this one. More please!
Thank you so very much for this video. The Birthday Party is definitely one of the best and rawest bands of all times. Sadly it is nearly forgotten. Keep up reminding the KZread community of this unique godfathers of modern music.❤
Could you please do a lesson for the six strings that drew blood someday? Thank you so much for the work put into this. You have Rowlands tone and feel on point.
Yes! Thank you for doing this song. It’s one of my favourite birthday party songs.
Great choice, in my opinion you’ve got the best guitar lessons. Cheers or as we say Aloha. And thanks
Thanks again Adrian. Always been a big Rowland S. and Birthday Party fan since they emerged out of the Boys Next Door way back then. Your sort of approach, showing the notes, scales, chords and encouraging us to explore the themes within a song's basic structure really helps me. It fits into the sort of discordant style I am working on for myself.

Me too mate, saw Birthday Party at the Stage Door bout 82/82..
Thanks for posting this Adrian. I saw them live many times and what an experience that was! Great stuff, and I look forward to trying to play it!
I would love a lesson on some of Craig Scanlon's riffs/style from his work with the Fall. Songs like Wings have deceivingly complex riffs with a unique twisted rockabilly style not unlike Howard's .

Yeees! More RSH!
Thank you for doing a Birthday Party lesson! I remember trying to figure out their stuff many years ago and wishing there were quality lessons like this. Today's a good day.
Superb - comprehensive and lucid tutoriial on a unique ballad. The world needs more of this. Sincere thanks.
I am fucking speechless how expert you are...
I love your teaching style AND musical taste, awesome track again!
Great stuff! Love the Birthday Party. If this is heaven, I'm bailin' out!!
great work thanks. Despite all the great guitaring this song, like most BP tunes, is made great by the thunderous bass, virtually only 2 notes but killer like all their songs. Keep up the great work.
wow glad I found this channel. Covering things that can rarely be found.
I can't recall how many times I saw the birthday party (seaview/crystal ballroom mostly);it was that many times. I wasn't 18, so had to 'sneak' in. I figured that wearing a long, dark overcoat would hide the fact I was not 18 & would mask my baby face. 🤣🤣🤣 I assume back in those days they really weren't so strict on checking on id and my mates and I would never get checked. Often they weren't headlining so would play downstairs, at times upstairs in the big room. It never mattered where they played, they were always high energy and manic. As punk was still lingering the look of the crowd were a mix of punks with well curated mohawks & safety pins. The other group of punters were the goths that were just starting to make their way as punk per se was dying out. And to this day I've been a big fan of Rowland (RIP) & his band, Nick, Mick, Warren, Barry etc. So many old stories and great memories. Thank you Adrian. 😎👍
Best taste in music on guitar KZread!
Great choice! Love Rowland, love this song.
would love more birthday party tutorials shes hit or junkyard would be wicked
Thank you for this.
Yes ❤Rowland S Howard! Thanks Adrian
So much of the guitar - or more so MUSIC - world will never get to hear just how creative and unique people like Rowland and McGeoch were. They will never hit the mainstream notoriety of people like Jeff Beck due to the genre, but are equally so well deserving
You find and know some of the coolest stuff 👍
Great to see ! R.I.P Rowland .
favorite punk band ever!!!
Nick Cave and Rowland S Howard's collaborations ended after Blixa Bargeld arrived on the scene, and Blixa's departure was shortly after Warren Ellis joined the fold. Mick Harvey lasted a bit longer, but he eventually left as well. I think they all felt sidelined by the new arrival, whose contributions were seen as being favoured.

Dude TX you sooooo much !! I love it Ja Nik Cave 😊❤ rest in Pease brother ...... See you in heaven
The Birthday Party is so fckn dope, they did a post punk that was really close to No Wave the more they advanced as a group, is sad that they didn't get the exposure they deserve. At least Nick has a very big body of work that feels like a natural progression from TBP's stuff. JUNKYARD KIINNNNNNGGGGG. Great vid
such a great song.
Awesome Love It Man 👍🔥
really like the camera work on this one
Thank you
Ho Ho more Birthday Party please
No way!?!?! A tutorial for a Birthday Party tune...sick
Thanks, this is great. Can you do tutorial for Dinosaur Jr. - The Lung or Sludgefeast?
Well this looks ambitious... time for a brew :)
Yes!!
Nick Cave should write one of those self help books or a guide on how to succeed in life by being yourself, it's been a long time since this song and the coronation ceremony.
Could you do President Gas? I love that song and this song keep up the good work!
If one could wish for more… wishing for more excess of drippy spring reverb. And use of the trem. And a cigarette attached to the headstock.
Yes! Rowland! Yes!!!
Nice choice Adrian .
oh dang, I was playing it in F
Just watched the Autoluminescent documentary.
Any chance for Hair Shirt by the Birthday Party. That wigged out feedback solo! Wth makes the feedback notes so musical?
Great video man, if you ever thought about doing another Birthday Party track, please do 6in Gold Blade, I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it but just can’t get it right, I think it’s in 5/4? Cheers!
The crown prince of the crying jag
You have to do a video on RSH's Silver Chain
Good video, thanks. I've just been revisiting the Cramps after not listening to them for many years. It'd be great to have a lesson for some of Poison Ivy's guitar work. I'm not sure if you've already been there already. Cheers.

MUSICAL TASTE AT ITS BEST
As an instrumental this is the soundtrack for Cave's 1st novel.
Hell yeah 👍
Mick harvey also played on it I think.
Rowely = GOLD 👍🇦🇺
Woah, Adrian, that was a pleasant surprise. The song that got me into TBP 13 years ago. Btw, have you ever thought to give a try to Bob1/Bob2?

@@acpg awesome thank you! I'd suggest "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" as a song that contains so many fun guitar elements: from highly articulate rythm parts to pretty impressive solo.
A fantastic song by a fantastic band. But no mention of the main riff with the diminished5 being the Devil's Chord (Diavolo in Musica), mimicking Black Sabbath's song with that same name? I always wondered if it was Rowland's homage to Tony Iommi..
@ruskin73
Жыл бұрын
Yeah but dim5 was definitely in Howard‘s riffs: Mr Clarinet, Ho Ho, King Ink, Release the Bats… also the Black Sabbath link would seem rather distasteful and probably not so welcome in 1983…still it‘s there
Behind my guitar I'm a efffing rock star. So cool to play The Birthday Party...
superb any bevis frond?
Good taste, sir! How about something from Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard) whose playing is influenced in equal parts by sleazy jazzy rockabilly and post-punkers squallers such as RSH & Gill. He's also a massive McGeogh fan, like y'self. Think you'd approve.

Help! Im utterly flummoxed by backing track. How many bars is the intro on the abbreviated version on the track? Im having a hard time figuring out when one section ends and the other begins.
@acpg
Жыл бұрын
It's exactly as the original recording only the backing stops after the first chorus. So 2 bars intro. It is quite hard to keep your place without vocals, but it helps to feel those 6 bar phrases as marked in the tab. Hope that helps.
