JENKEM - Chris Haslam On His Brand Brainchild and Mental Health
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Like sub-prime mortgages in the mid-2000s, there are way too many pro-skater-owned board brands today. So when we heard Chris Haslam was starting one to kind of stave off retirement, we didn’t think much.
But unlike most brands, Brainchild Skateboards has more of a purpose, in that a portion of all proceeds go to charities. Since the passing of his friend and former Dwindle teammate Ben Raemers, Chris decided to start off donating to Project Semicolon, a non-profit that works to prevent suicide by providing better access to information and resources.

the hardest part is talking about it. i've been in multiple psych wards but my friends forget, some of them may not even know at all. and of course i don't wanna be the guy who constantly brings up how mentally unhealthy i am. suicide is really the only way to find out how depressed someone truly is. it's not that people don't care, they just have their own things going on. it's obvious when your friend breaks their arm or their ankle, mental health is a lot more difficult to see.

Not to mention the fact that people that don't suffer from mental health issues don't understand how much it affects everything. We can't 'just think positive', that's the disease. People need to talk to get a perspective of how deep this goes, how many are affected and how different it can be. I myself have been bombarded by both professionals and 'just helpful' non-pros who don't manage to help you at all. Life is hard, and it gets harder when it moves on without you. Find someone to talk to, just to share the perspective, even if it might not help for the moment. Don't let this horrible shit take you, I root for you, even though I don't know you. No one deserves this.

Mental health is stigmatized in our country in this current epoch of history. It's more than people have their own things going on, a big part of it comes from how mental health patients were treated in the past in America. Abe Lincoln was a melancholic, he would probably be classified as clinically depressed in our time period and prescribed zoloft. People need to understand it's ok to feel bad, sad and that those feelings are human and normal. Not only that but depression doesn't mean you can't accomplish anything or have any value look at Abe.

Mental health aint hard to see, ppl just don't fucking pay attention. You can't expect them too either, shit ain't their problem they've got their own shit. Mental health is a purely personal thing you have to heal on your own, if it is dependent on any outside sources or substances you've fucking lost the battle already. It's a hard road and sympathy just puts a fucking pause on things. Self Analysis kids that's you're road out. Good luck!

Navigating the cluster-fuck minefield of mental illness is often a solo journey, even if friends are there to listen. the best we can do is listen to each other. Good luck

I already knew Haslam was a good person with good values. Yet the dedication towards supporting sufferers of mental illness and promoting mental health goes deep, for me at least. I can't speak for any other sufferer but myself, but thank you, Chris. Your attention is enough, yet you go further. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Mad respect, especially for acknowledging that he really doesn’t know anything. I think that’s the biggest barrier for most people who want to help, so it’s sick to see someone who’s not necessarily solution oriented, but knows he wants to be a part of the process

You don't gotta be an expert to care. You don't have to be an expert to be someone that gives others a reason to live. Even just going to the skatepark & getting to meet new people and make friends makes me feel so much better. Be good to each other. Love each other & have each others back.
Rest in Peace Ben 🖤
My all time favourite skater... Keeping it real and not letting success change his personality or behaviour
Could/would watch a hole series about him and his adventures!

I’m a recovering drug addict with only 2 weeks clean, just got kicked out from rehab at 11:30am today for behaviour. First video I watch on KZread cause I can’t sleep right now, 12pm. I stopped believing in coincidence. His always been my favourite, always an inspiration to me. Always going above and beyond. Keeping it real, always being true to himself. Ive got my Shane cross poster on my wall since I was young and my fallens shoes signed from Chris when I got the chance to see him face to face for a brief moment at slaughter at the opera. I always skate through Martin place and at the top of the 10set, I sprinkle my board with the water from fountain that Chris’s board went into. A Legendary hero.

The first person to sit next to me on Monday at a 12 steps meeting was named Ben, the last person who got asked to do the serenity pray was named Ben, I went to another meeting last night and the first persons hand I shook was named Ben, then today on my way back to the area from getting kicked out of rehab I decide to swap trains at Wollongong and to wait for the express rather than staying on the all stops. It’s was a 25 min wait and it wasn’t going to save me that much time. I decided to go for a little walk when I would normally have a ciggy. Was thinking of walking on the other side of the train line cause I thought there would be a more shops. Some reason I just started walking keeping an eye out for somewhere to charge my phone. Seen a restaurant thought I’ll keep walking. Seen a young lady jumped out of her car, just asked her if she knew anywhere I could charge my phone like a pub, she replied you could come recharge it at our church, she was part of a band like Hillsong. So we walked 1min and went into this Church and the first guy comes up to me shakes my had and his name is Ben, welcomes me to join them. One of 6 people there tells me his story in front of everyone how he almost gave his unborn away cause he didn’t have the funds to support another one already have two and being an ex drinker and gambler. After asks if it’s alright to pray for me. I let the know my situation. Straight away they all circle me and put their hand on me saying each their own prayers fast and loud to help get better. I decided to wait for the next train thinking it wouldn’t be much after, when I checked the train wasnt for another hour. They played their songs for me I just sat and listened for a bit then got involved on the drums a bit. Caught the trains back to area. Get home gave parents big hugs. Had dinner washed up to try to keep parents happy cause I stressed them out today with my situation. Jumped in bed before 11. Laid down try to sleep until 12. Check out KZread and scroll little bit see Chris and clicked on straight away. And his talking about Ben and I see rip Ben. My name is Ben and I believe in fate. Fall Rise Grow Believe .
I wasn't familiar at all with Chris's work beforehand, but that doesn't matter after watching this video. I instantly went to his website and bought a shirt. I will also buy a board when available. What he's doing is extremely valuable and I applaud him because mental awareness is a very hard road to navigate, but so needed. I will continue to support his cause in any way I can, even if it is just buying a shirt.
Love this guy I hope his brand finds success
Sometimes it takes a tragedy to find purpose. Keep up the great work Haslam you're a legend in my eyes
Thanks for this Chris! I’ve been a pharmacist for thirty-five years and skating for forty-five years. I do a lot of counseling in my day job with people suffering from mental illness; depression, debilitating anxiety, PTSD....and so much more. Slowly, but still not fast enough, the stigma of MI to talk about/get treatment is lifting...... Medicare For All will go a long way in helping those in need. Our profit-based system at present is sickening; it needs to end!!
I love the passion Chris has for the sport and the people that participate in it. Very inspirational.
Respect to Chris Haslam. Lost an old friend to suicide this past week. His funeral was Monday. So many people there vouching for how happy he always seemed, and how he brought them out of depression when they were feeling down. None of us knew that he was hurting more than anyone until it was too late. Thank you Chris for helping to bring attention to this issue and RIP Kenny "Dewd" Consadine 1984-2020.
Brazilians skaters admire and respect you... Thanks guy!
I used to see chris at richmond park , i didnt go often but he was allways there skating hard and he is such a nice friendly guy and great to hear he is honoring his friend by helping others bringing awareness
Skateboarding is such a great community. Let's support our friends through tough times. Haven't heard from a mate in a few days? Drop him a call, see if he wants to go for a skate. Keep talking, keep skating. Even after all my years of struggling, skating is always something I can fall back on to free my mind. Even if it's for a half hour mini ramp session.
A legend skater with a quality company & positive message & goal. - this is the future.
Chris Haslam, thank you for being a huge inspiration to so many bro. Many Blessings and support positivity.
Still one of my fav. Skateboarders of all time.
Im digging the van conversion!!
👊big props. There's a lot of people suffering and others tend to not care anymore about our fellow man. As a sufferer... this put a smile on my face, thanks Chris
Love you Chris, if you’re reading these comments just know you’re helping so many people. Keep up the good work
As I've aged and my body just can't do it anymore,it's sad.even when I was you young skating was the ultimate release.I realize that our, bodies break down. When I watch people skate I get that feeling of amazement. Today's tricks, access to skateparks, and true street skaring, not to forget these huge drop ins on super ramps with crazy Stunts, big olies on top of old round dangerous infrastructure make my head feel.better.Hasslam is a saint.
Thank you Chris for being such a great example to people, all while being of one of the best, unique ninja skaters, with the quality style that is unable to be copied..... but most of all for your legendary heart willing to stand up for mental illness, the raw harsh reality that it exists and how much we need awareness of it... Props and thank you! Much respect and admiration bro.
This was so touching. Loving his conscious effort to fight for those who may be suffering. Keep it up ♥️
Such a good man
Thank you Chris for being an ally to those of us skaters who suffer from mental health issues.
I've always liked his genuine way of living and his skating. Way to go, Chris. I ended up leaving a good paying job in order to start a nonprofit that teaches kids solar power because I saw a need for it, so I feel I can relate to Chris's decision.
I was wondering where has been the other day. Damn near shed a tear on this one. What an awesome guy
Thank you for what you are doing. It brings me hope for a better future.
Wow brilliant. I myself have managed to come out the other side of some dark anxiety about 4 years ago. I was so bad that at one point I was to scared to even get out of my bed room and felt I could go on with life, and I'm a 42 year old man. With a lot of support from family and friends and several shrinks I managed to change my outlook on life and also massively change my life and my life style. I took up many hobbies to release those happy endorphins. Skating was one of them. I am a begginer but getting better and it brings me great joy. Do what makes u happy no matter what anyone thinks as long as it's safe and not hurtful to anyone else, it will bring u great happiness again. ✌️
Living legend, since the day he was put on Earth. Bravo geeza!

always loved this dudes skating never knew what hes like as a person but got nothing but love for him, what a gentle soul and very kind hearted guy, it's okay not to be okay and Chris is definitely going the right way to helping people
Chris Haslam hit the nail on the head, we really need to start addressing mental health the way we do physical health. There's such a stigma when it comes to mental health nowadays thanks to things like the media portraying it in the wrong ways. Everyone struggles with mental health at one point or another in their lives. Everyone. It's time we as a society move forward and end the stigma. It's okay to admit that you're not doing well mentally or struggling and to seek the help you deserve.
Thank you, Chris! Love
Bless You Chris. Great and beautiful initiative to Align with purpose. I Support you and I send My Love.
Thank you Chris!! Much respect!!
Wholesome and pure this guy
Haslam is easily my favourite skater. Such a unique style and clearly a solid dude
Glad you guys showcased this. I'm going to go support his cause now.
Thank you so much for advocating for mental health issues. You say that you are no expert about mental health & in my experience with my own children & the professionals we have sought to help them, a lot of them are not experts either. If you're lucky you can find a good therapist. THAT is why what you are doing is so important. Getting people talking about their problems is the 1st step to understanding what strategies to use to cope. Again, thanks so much for caring & advocating
Thank you Jenkem. Thank you Chris. Thank you Ben, especially you have brought mental health out into the skateboarding world. Our minds can get so fragile. Seek help if you can please. Life is precious, life is beautiful. Lots of love to everyone out there
