My father, who loved Jelly Roll Morton above all musicians, coined the sentence (and had it always on his car and record shop) "Jelly Roll Morton plays better everyday".

thanks for that, this video is really moving to tears, a beautiful work of love and full of meaning to anyone who has a little knowledge of the saga and deeds of this musical giant, one of the three inventors and creators of Jazz.

When I heard the Lomax tapes at the Library of Congress in 1991, thought I had died and goine to heaven!! Openly weeped when I heard "My Gal Sal" by Paul Dresser. Morton did NOT put it through his sieve; he sang it straight, and that was simply wonderful!!

This is a great clip, he must have been one hell of a character, pity there's no live footage of Jelly. Anybody interested in the history of jazz should lash out and get the full Alan Lomax Library of Congress interviews,it's an amazing slice of American history.

I found Jellyroll's grave too after reading his biography, it is at the Calvary Cemetary in East Los Angeles where I grew up. Incidently, Curly Joe of the Three Stooges is buried across the street at the Jewish cemetary.

A lovely tribute to a real jazz genius. The veracity of some of his claims may be suspect, but his music certainly is not. I would recommend the Library of Congress recordings to all. Thank you for sharing this post.

A classic moment was when somebody asked Duke Ellington if he thought Jelly Roll Morton was good. He replied, "Sure he's good. Good at talking about Jelly Roll Morton." haha.

well, OK. I don't see any point arguing about it. All I would say is that my versions seem as about more sense. However, i will not quibble over jelly's wonderful music and thank you so much fot your efforts.

Excellent - a fine tribute. Just a thought about some of the lyrics. I think it is 'Preacherman said 'we oughta (or gotta) be fair, can't make him king ...' And is it 'ivory fool' rather than 'irate fool'?

Wonderful video! My late great Uncle Marty Bloom, co-author of the song "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its' Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight?", was a one time manager for Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. See WW1 DRAFT REGISTRATION CARDS 1

@IndependentGeorge76 Everyone who trashed Jelly Roll in the public did so for their own benefit because they were competing with him for popularity.

strangely (well, to my ears at least) Duke was never remotely complementary about Jelly Roll. he described his playing as like 'some old lady teacher from a conservatory reading jazz lessons from a book' . for all Jelly Rolls skills, he was fairly universally disliked by his contempories by the end. Louis Armstrong never liked him on account of the way Morton used to call King Oliver 'blondie', due to his dark complexion. still, he sounds great to me.
