In the 1970's my Uncle Jim on my mothers side of the family became a JW Elder, I was raised an Anglican - now Atheist. He would talk about his beliefs and he was a biblical literalist, ranging from the age of earth and Noah's flood. I tended to dismantle just about every one of his statements with scientific evidence. My mom eventually asked me not to attack his beliefs and I told her I would only if he stopped preaching. Needless to say I was not a favorite niece of my Uncle Jim.

I was raised in the religion left when I was 16. I was kicked out of my home. My family disowned me, I was shunned. To top it all off I was abused by an elder and when I told my story at 16, my mom n the organization did nothing. The religion/cult is so terrible. "So you could just wake up in paradise and be done with this world?" "Yes." "All the time." We were not alone. Also, several kids got abused. The only reason the man was caught? A brother defied the elders to walk on stage and yell out the guy was a pedophile. Immediately several girls and boys started balling. If the elders had their way, he'd have prayed for forgiveness and gone on preying on kids. What more do you need to know?

philbyification Aw. Thank you. Any support really does mean a lot because generally people can be rather dismissive when former JWs tell their story. At the beginning of the Leah Remini A&E special episode about Jehovah’s Witnesses, they showed a clip of ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses protesting outside the Watchtower Society’s main office. One of the protesters said unless you’ve lived it, you couldn’t possibly understand what it’s like to live as a Jehovah’s Witness. That is very true. When I tell people how intense and soul destroying it can be, they act like I’m exaggerating and being dramatic. Even my former therapist was like that. Only when I talk about it am I able to make peace with what happened. But most people don’t want to hear it. Fortunately, my current therapist is empathetic and understands for the most part what I’m talking about since he has a relative who is a Jehovah’s Witness so he knows I’m not making any of this up.

I was approached by two ladies pioneering this past weekend; one a very elderly person- like myself, the other a younger one, learning the craft so to speak. Perfect, this is just the scenario I wish for... it began with the usual attempt at warming me up with the traditional "the world is so full of evil nowadays..." I politely disagreed with her and pointed out that there was just as much and probably more evil done back in the day but it's good that now we can uncover those acts like the church abuse of children today that would have been hidden from view thanks to tools such as the internet. And so it went with every assertion made by the team leader that was promptly yet respectfully taken apart and examined such that the younger started asking questions instead of making assertions that I knew I had flipped the situation and planted the seed of doubt in her mind. It was the best I could hope for; after all when she returns to the hive she will be re-groomed before being sent out again, but my hope is if I can flip just one, inoculated with doubt and uncertainty, it will all have been worthwhile.

It’s great listening to your panel of former JWs. Current JWs will not disclose as much as three-quarters of what Lloyd, Amber and Owen have disclosed. It’s all about impression management, controlling the narrative. Your typical JW is fresh-faced and naive in their efforts to spread their word. They are not overtly manipulative. But make no mistake: They have been well trained in one-way monologues with “interested” householders yet they do not “hear” themselves as manipulative - especially if you have been raised in it. Thanks for airing this level of information and for the insights of your panel

WOW my (3) favorite Activist dropping truth 💣💣 bombs on the WT/GB madness!! I began to wake up from the JW's by reading about Mormons and watching videos of episodes entitled.."I was a Mormon". Then John Dehlin's excommunication was broadcast on television. I started following him and I noticed a ton of similarities between the JW's and the Mormons. This was an eye-opener for me!! After that I got the courage to go to KZread and look up.. "Why do people leave the Jehovah's Witnesses faith"...that's when I really started waking up! I became obsessed listening to all ExJW stories on KZread and the FEAR of the "so called" apostates that we are taught to detest started to become a different reality, they are just people telling their experiences when they were an active JW and why they left. So all the stigma started to dwindle. Then I branched out and started looking into Seventh Day Adventist, Scientology, Christadelphians, The Brethren, Christian Science. I started noticing the parallels between all the religions, and it runs deep...no questioning, no doubting and everything comes from the top down. The rank-and-file are just the followers with no personal self, no individuality. After you wake up and start seeing these things it can take a toll on you, especially if this is the only thing you have known all your life! It is really tough! The phobias and fears, can mess with a person's mind. Now I see why a lot of people resort to suicide, it is scary but the good thing is there's help!! The internet has played a big part in all of this! Now I look at people as being just human beings trying to do their best, trying to deal with all the stresses and anxieties in this world. I can now honestly say that life is better on the outside! 💯

My dad was PO for almost two decades, my cousin and his wife were in Bethel for over 20 years in Patterson, NY. I was a regular auxiliary pioneer for a little over two years in my teens, on and off aux pioneering for a couple more after I started working full time and left around 2003, when I was 25 yrs old after being disfellowshipped for having sex with my then studying fiancee who was an unbaptized publisher at the time. We both left, she was an atheist anyway who'd introduced me to The God Delusion when we met the year before. I realized that I'd been praying to no one the evening after my judicial committee meeting when the elders told me their decision to DF me, I was in my bathroom reflecting on the reality of doing everyday things of routine, like brushing my teeth, going to sleep, waking up etc. without god anymore, since I was now 'outside' my relationship with him, which the elders took the time to make the most clear to me that night: I was alone now , and things like prayer would feel different now that god had left me (because I left him). Well, it didn't.....and then it hit me like a ton of bricks....

I refused the Watchtower and told them I'd look it up online and they told me that computers were evil and they would never let their kids get on one. I told them I watched parents who were my aunts and uncles who were JWs in my younger years and seen how much fear they put their kids through. I would prefer not mistreating my kids like that.

I let it climb into my shirt and forgot about it. When the Witnesses arrived, I began my, "I have my own beliefs...." speech when the Witnesses eyes got huge and they started to back off the porch. I was confused until I looked down and saw the snake's head peaking out of my shirt. Needless to say, the visits stopped.

31:15 Pre-baptismal recruits have the option to ask any question about any thing and also the option to not request baptism - baptism constitutes a public-admission of understanding and acceptance of the tenets and particulars of the faith - Witnesses changing their behavior towards someone who they see as falling away, after baptism, is what scripture tells them to do: 'remove the wicked from among yourselves', 1 Cor 5:13. Most people would agree that you can't examine Witness beliefs for an undetermined amount of time, request and follow through with the public declaration of baptism/acceptance of the group's beliefs, then unrepentantly turn away without being disfellowshipped, as communicated by verses like Hebrews 10:26 You can't join any group then turn traitor - even if your reasoning is sound. 'Oathbreaker' is what you're seen as.

How do we protect ourselves from JW folks? Here in Ukraine they tend to pay us a visit every year, and they obviously aim at the local children. I find it disgusting. They bring along toys, amusement-park-on-wheels and other stuff. Loud music, lots of people, things seem harmless at the beginning, but we all know what's next( As for those door-knockers, I once found a way to get rid of them. When they visited my home years ago, I ask my late grandfather to go out and have a talk. He was 78y.o. die-hard communist, kinda alcoholic and theist. That was a blast! =D I was standing behind the front door, watching how those guys' faces were changing as my grandpa keept schooling them about communism and corrupted government. It concerns me little what consenting, informed adults do...however when it involves children this is problematic. We frequently have JW's come by and several have their tiny children accompanying them. One cold, inclement winter day a father with 2 small children under the age of 4 years knocked on the door. Not wanting to be rude to him in front of his little ones, I took him aside and told him that he likely loved his children and thought himself a good father. I asked him to please not take his little ones out on such cold days and long walks and that it may be more helpful to practice his faith in a different way. I did not expect a positive response but could not remain complicit with what he was doing with his children but also did not wish to expose them to any stranger hostility. Very difficult and concerning.

Why did he need to rest then? Did he perhaps massively fuck up on day six and say “maybe I should lay down and rest before I fuck up some more”? If so, then does that mean that he never finished creating the universe, and also that he’s made numerous mistakes (outside of what can be dug out of the Bible)?

@John Davis .. I completely agree with you that reading the bible will help to educate you "OUT of theism", but I cant say that I agree that burning the bible books is the right answer. Having raised 3 children (now well into their twenties and beyond), I'm convinced that education is the key to critical thinking. It was only after spending a LONG time educating myself in all world religions did it help me understand how/why people believe what they do today. Once I understood the source of religious beliefs, it helped me understand how we got here AND helped me understand where my own mind took me. Burning books is never the answer - education is (IMHO...)

Back in the 80s I moved to a new state with my husband and kid. The JWs were the first people who ever knocked on my door and I was so lonely I talked to them! But I would ask them really obnoxious questions, like: God created everything in the Universe, so that would mean he created life on other planets, if it exists. Does that mean Jesus had to get crucified on all the planets with life? They said no one ever asked that before! 😆 I also asked about evolution! “God created HUMANS, we’re not from monkeys.” And I actually said, well, if he’s God couldn’t he just turn monkeys into people?! 😂 I swear I drove those poor people bananas with my absurd questions! And they keep coming back! It was fun pulling their legs! They believe only 144,000 people are getting into heaven. I asked why they are trying to help people get into heaven when there’s only room for 144,000? They said they liked me and they wanted to “save me.” 🙄 After a while the thrill of perplexing them wore off and I didn’t wanna talk to them anymore. Ran out of annoying questions to ask them, LOL. So my daughter’s friend answered the door and told them I moved. Anyway, I have a friend who’s an ex-JW and she said one sure fire way to get them to leave and never return is to tell them you’re a disfellowshipped JW!

I was raised in it. For my dad, they caught him as a teenager with a kid on the way and part of a broken ho!e. They gave him support he desperately needed. It's less about the specific ideas and more about the community that developed around it I think. And if you are on the inside, they're always there for you. Helping each other out. Nobody is allowed to talk about the bad stuff so it all seems like sunshine and roses.

Wait, Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the earth is currently under control by the devil? So technically earth is hell? I'm not a fan of the Jehovah's Witnesses, nor any Abrahamic religion for that matter. But I will give JW's this; to me personally, the idea of the earth being hell makes a little more sense to me then what the average Christians have preached.

"So technically earth is hell?" Yes. I think most Christians have that view if they think about it. Where exactly was Lucifer sent, or where did he go, when cast out of heaven? Right here. No reason to go to Mars; its cold and nobody there to bother. Lucifer presented himself to Eve and there's no indication he ever left Earth.

Consider this end time prophecy which, can only be fulfilled by EX-Jehovah's Witnesses: . Isaiah 66:5 Hear the word of Jehovah, YOU men who are trembling at his word: “YOUR brothers that are hating YOU, that are excluding YOU by reason of my name, said, ‘May Jehovah be glorified!’ He must also appear with rejoicing on YOUR part, and they are the ones that will be put to shame.” . [Name of person] is no longer one of JEHOVAH's Witnesses ---> excluding YOU by reason of MY NAME . Did you get that? . Disfellowshipped Jehovah's Witnesses will rejoice and the ones that remain will be brought to shame. . The difficulty most EX-JWs have with this revelation is that they would have to accept that Jehovah's Witnesses and their Governing Body are indeed playing a profoundly significant religious role during these end times. . This goes completely against ALL of the now very large history of narrative EX-JWs have curated on KZread and everywhere else on the Internet. If what I have said is true it will be extraordinarily embarrassing for ALL the EX-JWs who have not thought this through while leaving an enormous amount of testimony to expose the embarrassment they deserve. . This difficulty is exacerbated by the popular belief that something righteous needs to be discovered in order to identify "true religion". . The bible and Jesus Christ himself however, makes it evident that we should instead be identifying something undermined in a spectacular way by Satan and ruled by an entity called the "son of desolation", where lawlessness is rampant. . So if the Governing Body are indeed the rulers of Jesus Christs Kingdom during these end times then they perfectly fit the requirement of what Christians should actually be expecting in order to identify "true religion". EX-JWs themselves are unwittingly exposing the corruption, hypocrisies, deceit and outright lies we should be expecting from Jesus Christs kingdom during the end times. . I explore this through my own KZread channel. . I invite you to watch a video called: Jehovah's Witnesses - The Governing Body Really Are The Rulers Of God's People! . and to ask questions! .
