The moderator interrupting Jeffrey Sachs must be put on a list of anti-democratic censors serving the US regime. There was no reason to do this other than to hide the fact that the US isn't a democracy and that nobody collaborating with the US supports democracy, exposing the entire narrative the West is trying to spin about it being "democratic". Meanwhile, Communist China is the most democratic country on earth, which the West decries as an undemocratic dictatorship.

Not all of them. Granted, moderator Steven Erlanger clearly comes from a deep state culture, and can't tolerate diverse views. I don't necessarily disagree with Jeffrey Sachs about the most violent country of the second half of the 20th century being the United States, but it is for a much different reason than what he espouses, although he does have some inconvenient facts on his side. Beginning with the1973 Roe v.s. Wade decision, an abortion industry led by Planned Parenthood slaughtered tens of millions of innocent unborn babies in the womb under the obscene mantra of "a woman's right to choose." These evildoers killed more defenseless human persons than Hitler, Stalin, and Mao's gang all together, but ironically, population control advocate Sachs is o.k. with THAT!

It is not between democracy and autocracy, it is our great need to learn to live together and work thru our common crisis. The whole world does not need to be a democracy or a fake one like ours. God help us if it were so. People see a democracy and think what a great place to get rich, but at what cost to others? Love this man.

But try to restructure society, to redefine the limits of power, economics and policy and you will end up like John F. Kennedy. Or Martin Luther King. Malcolm X. And there are plenty more of them who paid dearly. Whoever equates the reality of democracy or liberalism with freedom has a twisted perception of freedom indeed.

China started out 70 years ago poorer than any country in Africa in a gdp per capita basis. It’s not going to catch up to a superpower whose industries were intact post WW2 whereas much of the world was bombed to rubble. It’s like giving 1 year of training time between a starving kid and an Olympic champion, and then claiming the exercise regimen of the Olympic champion is better because he’s more fit at the end of that one year. Its better to see if they are relatively better off, which they are. 30 years ago about 10% of Chinese overseas students who came to the US ended up going back to China. Now that number is around 80%.

Professor Sachs said 'you can be democratic at home and ruthlessly imperial abroad'. I'd take it a step further: democracy is founded on individualism and the belief that the common good is born out of maximising personal freedom, which naturally, at the absence of a working measurement of common good, leads to a tendency of constant conflict. As a result, when democracies are in the position of power, the externalisation of the said tendency is inevitable which inevitably leads to imperialistic expansion. That is, there is a positive causal relation between democracy and imperial expansion.

I partially agree (in most parts) but want to add 2 cents. 1) I'd suggest that you replace "democracy" with "liberty" in your statements. "Liberty" is one of the most important fundamental values of the US while "democracy" is not. The two are totally different and they don't necessarily get along with each other. Politicians keep mentioning the word to fool the US people that they had "democracy" but they never really had it. 2) It's Capitalism that will inevitably lead to Imperialism not "democracy". While liberty is the favorite tool for capital and help it grow into a bloody monster and unleash it from the control of "democracy" eventually. Again just my opinion.

@@ruipengli3969 Yes I know. But "democracy" is very different from "liberalism" while the west especially the US politicians/media and even academia have been intentionally mixing up the two. In my mind "liberalism" which overly advocates personal liberty, or as @LTY stated "is founded on individualism" is in my mind almost synonym to "self centered" and "selfishness". Also its application in economics leads to "free market". Both are favorites of capitalists as they can make the society much easier for capital to manipulate in order to maximize profit. Simply put, "liberalism" benefits capitalists the most while exploits the working class and majority of the people. On the opposite "democracy" is supposed to represent majority of the people. It is neutral to ideologies in nature - ideally political and economical policies made in a democracy system should change over time to benefit the majority in each phase of the society. However democracy is extremely weak - so difficult to realize while can be easily ruined. I don't think any country in the world is a real "democracy". And the US has definitely destroyed it long ago - except its people are brainwashed to believe they still have it just because they have elections and can spit on the face of their president. P.s. in your last sentence did you mean to say "social democracy", or you truly meant "socialist democracy"? If the latter, you're exactly right :D - only socialists can eventually realize democracy! :)

Earlier in his career, he was one of the western 'experts' who 'helped' post-communist Russia transition to capitalism with 'shock-therapy' 'reforms.' But to his credit, he learned through his years of working among high-powered elites just how much their worldview is informed by falsehoods. It would be nice if there were more heartening examples like his, of people who keep their eyes open and change for the better over time.

"" We the People " remove those immoral and incompetent politicians with our ballots !" I don't think we can unless there is a bloody revolution. The candidates presented to us for election are simply from the same incompetent group. There are little requirements such as education and experience in running a country for the candidates. In China, the leaders (I don't think calling them politicians is appropriate) must start from the lowest level with entry exams. They are PROMOTED like the managers in a corporation with proof of accomplishment and competency. So the leaders of China gov't are the best of the best.

Good for Sachs in getting as much truth out there as he did. But I'd still like to point out.... 1) More than the matter of a simple difference in narratives among cultures, there is the problem of the deliberate construction of *false* narratives in the service of the powerful. A public that -- still to a disturbingly large extent in today's west -- falsely believes it is getting the truth from their news media is more dangerous than one that largely knows it is being lied to by their authorities and is harder to fool. 2) While Sachs touched a little on this, I'd like to give more emphasis to the point that 'democracy' is not what best describes the U.S. anyway, and certainly not what its policymakers have really been concerned with. 'Oligarchy' is a better description, one that depends on maximized wealth extraction on a global scale, and is happy to work with autocratic systems when they help them achieve this, and hostile towards them when they don't.

Thanks Jeffrey Sach to give your sincere opinion and your honest thoughts I m Chinese origin but live in Singapore as the third generation immigrant. I studied commerce, marketing, computer engineering and business analytics… most of my studies have some form of answers but diplomacy does not. It’s was factual and the results of the policies implemented. These policies impacted the most of human lives yet these were left to a small group of political elites to decide the world’s order. I hope there could be more justifications before a war is declared… and more studies should be devoted to study the impact of the lives of people globally.
