A Decade of Democracy: China and Russia

Ten years ago, Xi Jinping ascended to national leadership in China and Vladimir Putin began his second stint as Russia’s president. Over the next decade, both have consolidated power over their countries, and today both unapologetically and jointly proclaim their autocratic, ruthless, macho rule as a more effective model of democracy, winning admirers and imitators the world over. As Putin has pushed this model to unthinkable extremes, what has the effect been on fellow and aspiring autocrats? What is the best way to prevent the template from replicating even further?

And then Dr. Sachs points out that since the 1950s, the US has been the most violent country in the world, and the NYT moderator rudely demands that Dr. Sachs stop talking. HUGE respect to Dr. Jeffrey Sachs for actual truth telling, something we rarely see at events such as this fake forum. Prof. Jeffrey Sachs is, above all, a great intellectual committed to peace and humanity’s forum. His skills and capacities to understand very well what’s going around are much higher to the average intellectuals worldwide. Unfortunately politicians aren’t interested to hear about the truth neither to learn how to rule a world in a very complex situation. So we, the people of the world, of every corner of the planet, have the moral obligation to spread Mr. Sachs’ message.

Mr. jeffrey opinion is not surprising to the Chinese... because it is all common sense For example, I can also talk about the essence of Western democratic politics The essence of emphasizing people's power is to emphasize the power of capitalists, because capitalists are hidden among the people When the strength of the people becomes greater, the strength of the capitalists will become greater., Therefore, capitalists must emphasize "the supremacy of individual power", "liberalism", "social Darwinism" and "small government", because the reality is "winner takes all" The essence of the world is not the left and the right... but the lower and upper classes Why does capitalism emphasize the left and right? Capitalists hope that people do not understand that the essence of the world is class... so that the lower class will not threaten them, so their themes are homosexuality, abortion, environmental protection and other non class issues... 5% of the world's people decide the ideology of others The essence of the separation of powers is not legislation, administration and judicature, but capital groups, political power and media. Behind the media is a consortium, and behind the candidates is also a consortium. Political leaders can be replaced because they are the puppet of capitalists. But capitalists are always capitalists. The richest 200 people in the United States can decide government policy. Just as the German premier was forced to visit China by a group of German consortiums, the capitalists are stateless and can go anywhere to make money. If there is a threat, they will leave there. They need not be responsible to the people there. If anything goes wrong, we will elect a new regime. People's grievances do not affect them, and they are still at large. For example, the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States means that the government has been kidnapped by capital. Therefore, capitalists must emphasize "openness" and embrace "globalization" until China emerges and defeats them with their rules of the game. The struggle between Democrats and Republicans is also a struggle between two groups of capitalists. The Republican Party represents the interests of local capitalists, such as the oil industry and agriculture. Democrats represent financial and service industries, such as Wall Street. That's all These have nothing to do with "democracy and freedom". For example, the West supports the independence of Hong Kong, but Spain, Catalonia, demands independence. The referendum was passed by 92% of the votes. The western government did not recognize them, and they put them in prison. This is a double standard

I get chills just from listening to Professor Sachs sincere and emotional speech, but it also depresses me he is perfectly correct. As a Chinese American, I have never experienced this much hatred and ignorance towards China by Americans, and mostly from the political elite who is just protecting their own selfish agendas, or by the mobs who have never even been outside of the US, let alone in China, to actually meet anyone that lives there. I personally am not a fan of single party system nor a fanboy of the ccp, but even I can see the fact that they have brought millions out of their poverty in such a short amount of time. Here is a simple fact and you can use your own common sense to judge it; take a trip to China, and ask any random person off the street if they are better off than their parent's or grandparent's generation? Then ask the same question to random Americans off their street in LA or NYC. I am more worried than ever with the relentless of attacks from American politicians, I really hope China doesn't fall for the Western bs as Putin did with NATO. Like Professor Sachs said, why can't we have more dialog and peace talks instead of wars and insults.

You are so out of touch with Chinese wisdom. Don't forget that China is the only ancient civilization that is still alive today that has not been interrupted by colonization. In China, if you don't support the Communist Party, which party do you support? You can find a party that does better than the Communist Party, and the Communist Party will be replaced. I am Chinese and I think I speak for the vast majority of Chinese people when I say that we support the Communist Party because they have earned our respect and support. It's definitely not just fear, as the Western media reports. They underestimate the courage and determination of the Chinese. We have the tradition of revolution since ancient times that we are not afraid of sacrifice and war, but we also cherish peace and are willing to do anything for the sake of the next generation

As a Chinese, especially one who has lived in both Europe and China, I feel that the Western media has been consciously smearing China and not reporting China objectively. This is largely why many Westerners have a negative attitude towards China. However, only if you have actually been to China and lived there you can understand why ordinary Chinese people support the Communist Party so much. Simply because for the vast majority of people their voices were heard, their demands were met, they got what they wanted. They have many freedoms and rights that some westerners don't have. Most Chinese don't understand why Westerners who talk about freedom force the Chinese to copy their democracy and don't give the Chinese the freedom to choose their own way of life and political system.

ASPI (Australian Strategic Policy Institute) is a “think tank” paid by the Australian Govt to produce Lies about China. A recent effort was to claim that China uses Uyghur slaves in Xianjing. This was shown to be completely untrue. Australia joined AUKUS - Australia gave up its own Submarines (defensive in nature) - instead we pay the running costs of American Nuclear Submarines which patrol the South China Seas (in return we are supposed to get an American submarine in 2040). The associated militarisation has pushed Indonesia closer to China (similarly for other ASEAN nations). Are these the results the US wants to achieve? China used to be our leading trading partner, with many Asian students being educated here. This is all over - Australia now has the largest Debt in our history. We can all see what the US is doing to German and European Industry. Are we next?

The misconception about "democracy," in my opinion, is that there is only one kind of it-political democracy, such as one- or multi-party political systems, completely ignoring economic and social democracy. You can have a political democratic system, such as election, while people lack economic and social democracies, . Let me offer you two examples: elections can be held, but many people are still homeless, and many people are bankrupt because there is no government-sponsored health care. Democracy should be a means to make people's lives better, not as a primary goal. Any democracy that can't make people's lives better isn't a good democracy.

I also don't think that the lady panelist's presence is necessary at all.

That was an interesting and educational forum. I really like Professor Sachs' approach which is born out of extensive experience. He spoke with a wisdom with a most reasonable kind and something I will try to emulate. Understanding the underpinnings of cultural expressions of governance is absolutely crucial to forge a pathway to a more harmonious planetary existence. Thank you Professor Sachs for your fearless voice of reason and wisdom. We need more leaders of thought like you.

This is a forum whereby only Professor Sachs's view matters. The others on the panel were not at the same level of intellectual and occupational attainment to shed further light on the topic.
