Jeff Tollaksen - Physics of the Observer

Does the concept of observation have deep relevance in fundamental physics? What about in quantum physics where some kind of observation seems to be needed to transform “wave function” probabilities into actual events? What’s an “observation” anyway? What does it take to be an “observer”? Must it have some kind of sentience?

Do you want misinformation? Because that is how you spread misinformation. Many times the science leads in clear and specific directions that cannot be argued against. The only option left for the opposing position is to poison the conversation by "just asking questions" and claiming there is no way to know yet and more research is needed. Is climate change real? Not every scientist has agreed yet so let's just keep doing what we're doing until they're all on the same page. Do vaccines work? You know there's a lot of debate on the issue. Is the earth flat? Maybe, I try to keep an open mind to all possibilities.

We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.”_* Max Plank (the Father of Quantum Physics) ... It is curious how Max Plank's conclusions were so revolutionary in the field of science / physics (i.e. the immaterial (non-material) reality of nature and "the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind" as the ultimate force behind the fabric of reality). Yet, when microbiologists. biologists, geneticists, biochemists, other scientists, etc. come to the same conclusion (i.e. Intelligence/consciousness/mind is an integral and fundamental force behind the initial introduction and subsequent propagation of biological systems), they are rebuffed as being "unscientific". *Matter cannot exist without physical laws and constants first existing. We can't move in all directions inside our sphere of influence at once, that's a weird notion. Stone rolls down the mountain over some path, living beings move their body at will, according to biological abilities. But it's always in only one direction. It's strange because all matter is made from energetic stuff, we radiate light and gravity in all directions. Physical forces make us move in a vector like manner, over distinct paths, but spherical force fields around us radiate and receive energies in all directions, regardless where moving objects are. I think it's an interesting problem, must have something to do with balance and equilibrium we're simply not aware of.

It's easy to understand how future affects the present, also how past affect the future that didn't happen yet. Quantum particles are just charges, lumps of energetic potential, arisen from their energy fields that are everywhere at the same time. All particles of the same kind are exactly the same, but they have different properties when merged with other particles and positioned in a distinct gravity field. Some particles have mass, this property influence space around them somehow. It's possible because particles emerge from the ever present particle force field. Here is what many people find hard to visualize, energy and gravity radiate around in shape of a sphere. But interactions between particles are vector like, they interact in some direction. Gravity field doesn't have direction, it's bend all around. So particles move to some region of space, but space around them is already shaped, in advance. This means future space is not undetermined and unknown, it's already shaped by their mass, regardless of the particle's direction of travel. And gravity also change with particle's position, so future space is not fixed, it emerges from motion of mass. It's not possible to predict how mass will shape space around more than 2 interacting particles, check 3 body problems. Space-time change how particles behave, it makes pulses of energy potentials slower, but inertia is different for various masses. So physical conditions in the future are already partially determined, but not exact since there are always probabilities and chances in any dynamic systems. Here we came to a problem of the free will, whatever we mean by free and will. Intelligent creatures are not guided by physics alone, specially not self-aware beings like us. We have creative imagination, this strange ability can multiply possibilities of what we will decide to do next into infinity, far beyond what a natural outcome from motion of our material body would be if we could not deliberately resist physical forces. Some components of the future are set by physical conditions, other forces will emerge from our conscious decisions, chaos of entropy will do the rest.

@@ericvutran4140 This is a philosophy channel, not academia physics department brainstorming. Being able to describe physical principles with plain words is probably impossible, but we can share mental images and ideological concepts. First, let me make distinction from what we think is an object and how quantum stuff must be like. Particles are not like billiard balls, they should be more like small stars. Think how billiard balls collide. Now imagine how it would be like if you could touch the sun. Sun is a ball of plasma, its special state of matter we know very little about because it's not so common or easy to experiment with in nature. There are many kinds or states of plasma. Star doesn't have any solid surface, their influence extend over entire solar system. The visible surface of the sun is more like just another layer. My example is good because we can visualize how massive star, planets and moons distort space-time inside the solar system cell. Imagine all objects are energetic lumps of plasma, and they have no distinct round shapes. It's just rivers of plasma, with exaggerated bulge where planets and moons supposedly are in this imaginary model. This is how i imagine an atom. If we have no material objects and no geometrical shapes, it's very hard to predict what interacts, exchange energy potentials with what and when. Near infinite amount of electron pulses are constantly being exchanged. Gravity is smeared inside plasmatic roller coaster, every displaced bulge of condensed mass shift the balance of all other mass in motion. Theory says gravity influence extend to infinity, but drop in magnitude with square of distance. So our plasma solar cell model feels the gravity of all other massive objects in the infinite universe. Problem is, we can't see those influences because the entire space is shifting and curving or whatever space does, from all possible directions. We do understand gravity forms channels in space, like shortest paths of the least resistance, except that curvature also influence time in physical processes. To interact with something, we must focus on a certain region. Our brains can't control entire surroundings, only what the body is affected with at the time or what we focus with our mind. But future space exist and is already shaped in advanced, regardless of our perspective and motion. Hope i did a good job, and you got a better mental picture about what i tried to describe in the original comment.

In the classical double slit experiment which itself is all part of the rendering and no renderer of reality, the bring in of whichway information collapses the wave function. The output of the experiment has to follow the same rules ad building reality itself. When information is the main key behind every particle, reality is not a fundamental, but a virtual reality. Reality is a function of consciousness, and every individual player of consciousness does have his own datastream of reality ( Wigners Friend) including his virtual body (avatar) as physical constraint of the immersion during daytime. While sleeping we open up a new virtual reality without body, thats why the idea of dreaming still appears nonphysical to us. PS: if this is understood „the observer“ ergo our „player“ our nonlocal consciousness isn’t limited by the physical ruleset, just the Avatar is, which is also part of the rendering. Its not about altering physics you can manipulate statistical probability you blindly accept as physically. This has to be done consciously not intellectually.

Quantum formalism shows that both interpretations do generate same empirical results, that's because the formalism is already built with both perspectives.

I would have enjoyed a much longer interview with Jeff , brilliant guy... Still he seems to put TOO much stock in the observer effect..For at Least the first 100 M years the evolving material complexity of the universe contained NO observers.. Therefore we can logically deduce they are unnecessary to it's natural manifestations...Newly forming stars at that point underline the assertion that QM was in full UNOBSERVED operation.. I'm pretty sure that Jeff would agree that without introducing particles into the 2 slit experiment, no amount of concentration could cause particle collapse.. Since that's the case, it seems sensible to assume OUR awareness and observance of the physical world are as simple witnesses of the natural occurrences that would unfold in time EVEN in our absence. On the other hand, Jeff MUST be right about a future revolution in our understanding of time..The Copenhagen view at least, leads to apparent anomalies like retro causation, and that is illogical in my humble opinion..Thanks, for this stimulating interview.

You couldnt be more wrong my friend. As stated in the video and confirmed by experiments, future observers affect past. So the universe in the first few million years evolved as it needed for the observers (like us) billions of years down the line. Hard to grasp but it is the truth. As general relativity's 4d spacetime also confirms, we live in a mathematical higher dimensional structure where past, present, future coexist. Many 4d worlds coexist (which branch off each other at the time of observations) and the true basis of the universe is consciousness. There is one universal consciousness manifesting across space and time like characters in a multiplayer simulated game who have forgotten they are indeed also the one and same as that. Tat-tvam-asi.

Jeff Tollaksen generally does a lousy and very vague job of explaining his own experiments, but I've taken the time to delve into this and the implications really are quite profound. If you assume a "top-down" approach to causality, then you get precisely the results that he's been getting. But a " top-down" approach assumes reverse causality, or to put it another way, it assumes that there is something existing in the future, or perhaps outside the flow of time altogether (ie, in "Eternity") that is guiding the unfolding of the Cosmos to some predetermined end. If that's not an argument for God, what is?

I had a pot induced epiphany once. I don't smoke pot very often so the experience could be a random illogical thought process validified by chemical's. Or it may be an unlocking of a type of thought process. But even now many years later i wonder if i'm not correct. One question that some times get's asked is " if quantum collapse requires an observer how could the universe develop before brain's were there to observe it? Or some thing along this line. How is it, that we are made up of molecules and atoms that are with out conscience but we our selves possess this trait ... Biology alone is strange enough. but if we look at water and rock it's not to hard to see the fundamentals of biology.. But Consciousness seems to arise only at a very high level of complexity and seem to be totally different then the stuff it arises from. wouldn't there have to be a fraction of a bit of what ever conscience in the bits that make it? There has to be some thing about matter and energy that allows for consciousness. With out helium hydride nothing gets started in this universe. There is a fundamental quality about Helium hydride that can not take any other form. (Yikes just had a flash back of Plato and form's scary).. .. So lets assume there has to be a smidgen of awareness or consciences' some were in the basic structure of the smallest structures. other wise awareness and consciences couldn't be produced out of it. Science is like magic. But yet there's no magic in science. No matter how amazing our technology get's it will never be magical. Why? Because we got stuck with Energy with a strict usage warranty. If Magic existed there would be some structure some beginning point of were it came from to point to. Magic is a human term,. conscience is not magic. But if we stop thinking that humans are that important we might realize that this quality in the macro called consciousness that we believe is effecting the universe is, But not because of the form it has taken in our species but because of property's that have always been present ... Structure itself possess a quality. ... Now this is not some mysterious force of the universe the like's of Deepak Chopra promotes. It simple breaking down possible bias's about what physics might yet be. The universe is Space time and in space time things with property's interact based on the strength and weakness of those property's. Once a structure is formed it has more Consciousness or awareness then it had a moment before .. A structure knows one thing . A ROCK IS A rock . if that rock is smashed and becomes 2 rocks each one of those rocks is aware not that it was once 2 rocks or pain or any human level awareness .. it now is only aware of one thing which that its a single rock .. and all the property's that that single rock has in this universe it takes on the cumulative awareness of every molecule that is a bound to another molecule from electron upto iron ore ..a cumulative property of every structure that is bound and created and then bound and created .. A single structure is. That's it . that's all it has. but that structure is real. the property's it has effects and interacts with other structures. .. and some of the interaction become stronger and weaker depending on the structure.. So the effect a Rock or or an atom or even a star might have on a individual level to any quantum phenomena is probable not the same or big enough at times to even measure but is enough for the collapse itself to take place when and where it needs to .. biology may in it's earliest forms have a stronger influence on this property and eventually threw ever more complex structures . give rise to the very mysterious and personal and barely rationale process called human conscience ... The understanding that i am me, and i am sperate from other things .. i am a structure separate from all others is just a complex expression of the original form of the first structure .structure is the beginning of and has inherit to it a quality of awareness

This kind of reasoning leads us nowhere, physics can't always be observed directly and objectively, so observers is completely another set of problems. Problem is, if we don't do transformations all the way to the experiential level, results are meaningless, mostly just a chaotic set of some apparently random values. It's because we need to build chains of experiments before we can reach something objective, possible to perceive with our biological senses. Many things get lost with translations, conversions and transformations, there are also gaps in our hierarchical structure of knowledge, so we can never be quite sure what model show us is the actual reality or only a product of our machines. Think about it, if we can imagine stuff with our brains, so can machines, when we teach them how to detect and represents stuff. We can see this phenomenon already in simulations done by artificial intelligence, they create all kinds of weird visual hallucinations from a giant mess of available data. They are intelligent because we set the rules like what kind of frequency correspond to what color, how to deal with perspectives, recognizes distinct shapes, follow order of events and so on. Material mess would never be able to do that on its own, but we can make metals do meaningful dreams, invent patterns and shapes on their own. Our biological sensory organs are replaced with cameras, microphones and variety of other electric sensors, there's not much difference in perception of reality, both systems are limited somehow and none can detect everything that exists around in actual reality. So, observers doesn't really matter before we figure out how to capture all physical influences and changes. Using computer simulations to test all kinds of creative ideas and hypothetical models is the worst mistake we could do in science, simply because our imagination is limitless, there's no telling what our brains can come up with. So there are literally infinite possibilities, guessing is obviously a dead end street. Weird thing about the nature is, many mathematical concepts makes sense, known natural laws can be combined in many ways. This means we will have to give up on an idea everything that can happen actually does happen, or we need to rethink natural laws, because there are clearly limits to what is possible in reality, but our ideas don't recognize them. This is an indication of a flawed understanding of nature, not the evidence about some supernatural, higher dimensions of physics. But we don't know that for sure because nobody can tell what actually happened if we can't see natural phenomena by ourselves. It's not a hopeless situation, only very confused and perhaps even corrupt. So we don't need to examine observers, but we should check the structure of global scientific community, there's something wrong with the way how knowledge is organized and shared.

@@catherinemoore9534 Reality is what it is, nothing we can do about our condition and form, but we can influence our random destiny with another set of chances we create by our free minds. Because traditions and superstitious beliefs, because they can, in short. It's also strange, karma doesn't affect their deeds and motives, the only thing that does hurt them is natural and unknown destiny, sometimes also actions done by brave and highly ethical man who gets sick and tired of karmic fascism.
