Yeah, the ratings have been in a gradual decline. Don't get me wrong, it's incredibly impressive this show lasted this long, amazing on them. But that doesn't change the fact they can't spend like they used to.

@@mhalbe1984 that’s not why. During the pandemic, the only way they could do it logistically , with a quarantine period, was to shorten the game. Because they also film 2 seasons back to back. So…. They felt they made that concession at the time because it was either that or wait another year to start production. But. When the suits ar CBS saw that it could be shortened and still have an effective season with a lot less money, there was no way they were going to approve it going back to 39. Probst is just saving face here because he’s EP now. He can’t very well say “well I wish it was 39 but the suits have us by the balls..”

Literally no one enjoys the 26 day format more than the 39 day format. Not sure why jeff is so intensely in favor of it. It’s budget and that’s it.

Jeff is ruining SURVIVOR… they’re changing way too much…. I use to legit never miss an episode, now I’ll watch an episode every few months cause they ruined the game

For me it’s not about the numbers. It’s about the fact that 26 days doesn’t allow for enough social interaction. We need that third day every cycle for players to reflect about what happened and to mend feelings. We also need that third day for confessionals. This new 26-day format is missing the causality that we used to get. The new era feels watered down.

I’ve had a tough time getting into the new era. Part of it is I’m busier than I was when a child but I’ve missed a couple recent seasons. Hopefully I can get back into 45.

Well coming from a fan, the old game was superior. There's a reason so many of us Americans are bigger fans of Australian survivor now than U.S. survivor.

Between challenges, confessionals, and tribal council, the players never get a chance to socialize or form friendships and rivalries. That's the big problem.

I don't think so. Tribals only occur every 3 days, other than than that people hang around for hours at a time. Even the producers mentioned that there's a lot of extra time.

It's less than every two days. Also keep in mind that they're occupied with with 12+ twists each season. There's little room to socialize normally.

I'd have to agree. I don't think he cares, but he wants TO LOOK LIKE he does. His pathetic interviews are disingenuous. He's not telling the whole truth about what's what. I mean, why would he?

Jeff and the production team are killing survivor off with their decisions. 26 days, casting the same type of personality types in all 18 players, same location, no auction, no great rewards where blindsides are hatched. There are no villains, just a bunch of people getting out there and wanting to hang out. Just a safe and budget friendly show at this point that is nothing more that a shell of its former self.

I seize everytime a player now is like *it’s a blindside* like I haven’t seen a properly executed blind side in idek how long and then the ones that qualify are so lackluster bc of how messy everyone is now, no one can keep a secret, no one plays their idols when they need to or at all it seems 😂 and I *hate* the new editing style of leaving things out so tribals a “surprise” for us. I’d like to know how we f-ing got here … that’s why I watch the show ….

If they never go back to 39 days, I wonder what they would think about meeting that halfway and try out 32 days instead. I feel like that would strike a good balance between the new era while also giving the fans of the longer game something to like

And there is no more reunion show. Fun fact; the 1st season of Survivor was not intended to have a reunion show....however because of the unexpected massive popularity, they brought everyone back for a reunion.

Yeah I have been saying this for ages. Taking away food from contestants takes away their energy which we need them to have to make great TV. I don't get why he thinks that is a good idea. But it's all about cost saving and not actually improving the show.

Facts

The reason I prefer 39 days to 26 is that the relationships and alliances are so much deeper with the longer seasons. Because the game is a slower pace, it gives so much more time for the players to connect and bond. This leads to stronger alliances and just a completely different vibe to the seasons. 13 days is a long time. That's nearly 2 extra weeks of empty days where they had time to bond with each other or get on each other's nerves or whatever. The shorter season makes such a dramatic impact on gameplay, and it isn't a positive change.

I remember Survivor: Australian Outback was 42 days

Right!!! I really loved the rewards! I be very disappointed with the same rewards now every season that comes at the end because time is cut short! I used to be hype asf behind them rewards as if i was the one starving🤭

For me I preferred the survivor society growing more over 39 days. I don't care for all the crazy advantages either, being able to steal idols at tribal and bank votes. Idk, it just becomes so fast it slowly becomes less about the relationships the cast members form and more about finding advantages and blindsiding people for the sake of it. That's just my opinion of course.

Looking back at the older seasons, I do kind of miss group dynamics these people had. I watched amazon with my wife recently, that's the kind of stuff I miss.

I want to see the castaways the final 3 after 39 days. They look almost in recognizable after the 39 days. But with 26 you just try to starve them and keep them without fire. Gives less time for their specific island society to form and everyone to adapt to their situation. 26 days they all look the same

Make it 30. 26 is such an oddly specific number. 30 is a win win; a couple more days and people might shut up. And more importantly.... that's a month! That is infinitely easier to communicate

Agree. It should be at least a lunar month or 29 days. They could try old school layout with 16 players, 2 tribes and 2 finalist. This means more screen time focusing on dynamic within 2 tribes and 2 less players means less tribal. So they can stick with 3 day tribal circle as in 39 days Survivor until merge. After merge it would be 2 day circle.

I think they originally did it because they needed a 14 day quarantine and they’d usually be on the island for like 40ish days. Idk if 43 and 44 did that or if 45 and 46 will need quarantine time. I think expanding to 30 days would make sense.

It died during WAW to me. The fact that Tony was able to parade his way to the end made me stop watching by the final 8, because the winner was painfully obvious

Sad to see Jeff losing sight of the originality of the show. No wonder the competition feels so lightweight and short, I mean less than a month on an island!? Maybe they’ll come around when they’re budget improves. They finally brought back the theme song opening and they finally brought back survivor auction. I was glad to see them bring back the OG style of giving them nasty foods to eat (old school survivor was like fear factor, they even won cars!)

Honestly weather you played in the era or new era it's still Survivor. It's the hartest game to play out there and credit to everyone that has played it.

Make it 39 days again!

i really don’t think jeff understands WHY people dislike 26 days. it’s not bc it’s “too easy”, we all understand that there’s still a huge physical burden. having 26 just makes the game so much more fast paced. there’s tribals every other day, so basically everyone is just like game mode from day 1. for some reason jeff seems to think that we WANT that, but most of us Don’t. survivor is good bc of the interaction between strategy and social situations. watching people talk solely about gameplay is BORING and having a faster timeframe and thus faster gameplay just makes the show not as fun to watch.

I respect Jeff for at least discussing it even though its the wrong decision and its a much easier game

26 days because they are running out of money (ratings are plummeting). Another reason why they don't do the reunion show

They extended the episodes to an hour for 45, and it helped… but we still don't get to know these people like we used to. And I’ll never be used to the merge being 7-10 episodes in. The merge is over half the season now…

Apples and Bananas is right. But we all loved the Apples we received. He should come out and admit that these changes are being made to save cost in production. Covid time was a perfect excuse for them to change the game for these reasons and not go back to the longer format. They still get paid the same no matter what so it's probably hard to justify going back to a longer format that requires more work for them.

@@kshaf7250 Totally agree. And I know Jeff sees benefits of doing 2 seasons a year, But the character arc for everyone on Australia is way more intense and satisfying, because they blow past 39 days. Id love to see a celebrity style survivor one day. A and B list celebrities. Or social media personalities. A tribe with La Beast, Uncle Roger, and Angry Video Game Nerd.

Why not just be honest and say you’re doing it for budget cuts. It’s possible staff gets paid a little more because they are cutting out things like 39 days and after show reunions or ponderosa. Just admit it. 🤷🏽‍♂️

You NEED 39 days for Survivor to work. You need time for micro societies to form, for people to naturally take on roles in the tribe, for people to bond and get on each others nerves. You know, the core of Survivor. Then on top of that, they need to manage avoiding getting eliminated. We don’t need 26 chaotic days focusing on just voting blocks without properly getting to know who’s on our screens. We want the social experiment.

39 days was 100% better. I don’t like how the new format is rushed, non-stop contests and voting. Now time for the tribe to actually live life on the island like the old game. I’m watching season 7 on Netflix and the nostalgia is great but the main thing I notice is the time difference. It’s a completely different game because they had to spend so much time together trying to cooperate.

Just make it 4 more days.... At least it hits the 30 day month mark

This man is a genius. He auditioned for the job as a host and now he is part owner.

Your excuses don’t convince me Probst. And they never will. Try as you may, but you’ll never find any way to make 26 days better than 39. You should definitely listen to the fans more often.

There's not enough time for people to grow in the game, down time to form new alliances and plans, deeper connections and betrayals,...not to mention an additional two weeks is way more intense on the body and mind. They should at the very least make it 30-33 days.

I HATE the “no food” part and other parts of current survivor! Survivor looks cheap and stingy, no AMAZINGLY AWESOME rewards anymore, no more visiting the village locals, no more family member visits, the game time is almost cut in half, and the winner reveal is done when everyone is still hot, dirty and nasty! The original survivor episodes are much better!

New survivor is garbage . I watched winners at war, and half of 41 until the hour glass. It was the final straw.

So Jeff KNOWS it's a different product, and hears the crys for 39 but wants to keep it 26.

Jeff Probst needs to retire and let someone take over who will focus exclusively on the game and not social politics outside of the game.

The real answer is they’ve gotten real cheap. Even the grand prize of a million back in 2000 is the equivalent of $548000 in 2024. Pathetic given all the incredible success since. Should be a 2 million dollar prize by now.

Theres an alternate universe where survivor got cancelled instead of fear factor and jeff is the podcast guy instead of joe rogan.

It absolutely disgusts me, and I thought they were just doing it for the 'Rona like they said in the beginning. I stopped watching last season for the 2nd time in my life (first time was around season 9 or 10 when I got into high school and thought I was too cool) then over the years I've watched your seasons, started watching on TV again at like season 30, and bought every season on DVD and watched in order during quarantine. The way the show is filmed and laid out is absolutely abysmal as well. We need to get a petition going or something.

Things the new seasons are missing: - Longer time periods (39 over 26 for sure) - Better casts (If the entire cast is the same, what's the point?) - The live finales! (People don't talk about this one enough, but those live finales and reunions were amazing to watch, especially with the crowd's reactions to the votes. Jeff saying that he prefers the 'raw' finales is basically just him saying 'we have the same budget as we did in season 1') I'd love to have a great Survivor season again, cause I haven't found much of it worth watching after Winners at War ended.

Jeff Probst is the reason why he millions of former fans don’t watch the water down version of what was the best show ever created. You stuck yourself into the game! The social experiment was ruined by you.

Money is a factor, but I think editing is a factor as well. There was and is a lot of downtime on Survivor between the challenges and tribal councils, and 26 days means there is much less downtime for production to review for the show.

Those first few seasons were nearly torture!!!

i want to see international season, the best of the australian series up against the best americans, that would be so interesting to see the cultural differences

From what I've read, that is in the works. I would watch it. Australia Survivor is much more like the original US Survivor. It is quite enjoyable.

Australian Survivor goes more than 50 days. And they're strong, competitive players. Totally worth watching here on KZread.

32 days would be okay. A month is a decent amount of time and would be a good middle ground.

I feel like Probst and the producers have distanced themselves from the core base of fans in favor of progressive values.

I just don’t like how it’s 1/3 or the game is gone. If they made it 30-32 it would be different. I feel like that’s close enough. But taking an entire 3rd out of the game is rough

Australian Survivor goes for 47 days but has a larger cast of players. Also read somewhere Turkey's version is more than double.

If they are dead set on having 26 days probarly because of budget reason. They should have fewer players so game isent rushed and fast paced cause fewer days. Go back to original tribe layout. 2 tribes and 16 players.

I am a huggeee survivor fan…but I must admit that I kind of liked the old ways better…different islands and locations…good rewards every week after the 3 basic ones…longer days and better connections…original immunity idols…I still love and want to actually try my hand at Survivor, but i will say its slowly moving further and further away from what we fell in love with and I get it! Gotta elevate as time goes on, also COVID changed EVERYTHING! but can we get a new season where we go back to the roots! That would be awesome!! Like I would so hype! Cause rn im just trying to keep up with all these damn twists and turns and advantages lol I be confused like calm downnn and lets relax and play REALLL Survivor!! The COVID stipulations are over, so whyyyy are we still in Fiji!!!?? I really want to know ATP!

Here’s the reason Covid hit the show lost money the shorter production cost less. There’s your answer it’s cheaper to do 3 weeks then 5 weeks.

I really wish they’d go back to 39 days or even go back to 42 days like Survivor Australia. I think the longer the better. It’s more entertaining. More episodes are better. I also wish they’d bring back final 2 instead of final 3 and bring back Fallen Comrades and not do such a bloated finale episode with the final 5 and do a final 5 episode, final 4 episode, final 3 episode, and have the finale only be final 2. That was much better in all regards.

I feel the opposite. When there’s 39 days I’ve noticed people sit around and get lazy. They stop strategizing and barely make it to the final tribal. This one is so fast paced they’re instantly hitting the ground running.

I only started watching season 32 and consistently start to end since 37, but I haven’t noticed a big difference. First season it was shortened, I noticed, but was just thinking about it this season how I’ve already forgotten about the major change. Heard this last season was 90 min instead of 60 and they intend to keep it that way. I somehow didn’t notice that, but feel like I enjoyed the latest season a lot and wonder if that contributed. Felt like the game was longer even though it is the opposite.

Saves a ton on production and less time away from families of course Jeff likes it. Im not completely against it cause they still fill in the time. He does make one good point though. They really dont give them any food anymore. Even in reward challenges they are pretty much all comfort items during the team phase of the game: shelter tools, blankets, gear. The most they get for food is fishing supplies.

We need 39 days back.

It feels more like a game show now. It's less about the social connections and machinations, more about quick impressions and using advantages. There's not enough time on initial tribes, so the only people bonding are the loser tribes where they go through the furnace of tribal council. The other tribes are all loose bonds.

As someone who takes the 39 days to be OG. The new 26 days of survivor just takes the begging phase of the OG game like the crawling phase of the game and removes it so your game is right from the beginning of the season. It hits right from day one. Boom I’m totally in for these new seasons. It’s a new more dangerous game for sure. I’ve watched seasons 41-44 through from beginning to end well not with 44 it’s not over yet 😅. But I’ll definitely be watching the rest of the season. But how long can Jeff keep doing this.

Doesn’t feel like survivor if it’s only 26 days. With the 39 there was always a sense of ENDURANCE, a real hard uphill battle to reach the end. And it allowed more time for the social bonds that are essential to survivor. Also, the game only being 26 really takes away from the outlast element!!

Well if you want it to feel the same as a fan just multiply the day number by 1.5 and it will be the same percentage wise.

They keep bringing up the hunger when talking about 26 days. In season 45 it didn’t seem like they went that long without food

He is an executive producer at this point. Meaning he pays for the show. Its all his and it will never change back it will just slowly die. I bet they will lower the prize money before we see season 50.

I miss 39. New Survivor isn't nearly as good as old Survivor. And it's all because of the changes that have been made to the game.

Wasn't Jeff just wondering not long ago why more older people (over 50?) don't apply? It's nearly impossible for anyone that age to compete in these challenges, especially in this new "starvation" format (which I HATE). Only an extraordinarily healthy 50+ year old could fast for that long, never mind that they're almost always voted off early regardless of abilities (especially over 50 women). By contrast, I've seen younger contestants with absolutely nothing to offer the tribe in terms of challenges skate through almost the whole time. So please, Jeff, stop asking for older people to apply when you obviously only want young people.

Jeff isn’t wrong! I’m a huge survivor fan and I kind of felt the same way as this other guy the same exact way! Well, the same way as all of the people I suppose, but it took me a minute because I’m like how is this the same, how can it compare? How can it even be close to what they have to do at 39 days! But when I googled it and found out how much they don’t get and how much the other people could work for I was like OK maybe this can be the equator
