Jeep XJ Gets Lifted on 33s. Off Road Camera Chase Vehicle Build!
Nelson Flores is one of the dudes BEHIND the camera and screen here at Hoonigan: he films, edits, and shreds dunes with the Terra Crew every once in a while. So he needed his Jeep to be able to keep up with filming duties on the sand. Bad Daddy Braddy comes to the rescue... kind of.

The Dudeprime what did you think of episode 2!?
Dana 30* short arm lift* I would also advise steering box brace and Trac bar brace when you get around to doing the better steering system. Also for a cheap rear end upgrade to get rid of the rear Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25 look for a Ford 8.8 from a Ford explorer later 90s models had disc brakes and a few companies make swap kits for the xj to bolt the 8.8 in

Corrected is a vague thing. They probably won't ever see it but if they do just blame it on #baddaddybrad lol not sure any of them know how to build a wheeler I'm sure they are all capable of doing it but they revolve around cars. Offroad scene is drastically different everything needs to be over built. If I was doing that Jeep to do prerunner stuff and haul my son out would first have a full cage. Then a real long arm kit or make my own 3 link for it. The 30 can be built to survive 35s but in the dunes you really don't need anything bigger then that. Front springs would be some nice linear rate springs with acos bump stops, or ditch it entirely for coilovers. Rear would be a custom spring under setup with some nice bypass shocks. Think that would be a nice streetable build. Better then what I'm building now. Definitely do not advise trying to put a 6bt in a vintage bronco on 42s 😂 but I'll sure be happy with all the power crawling around the USA getting 20+ mpg

props for taking it off the dock
If you’re running the 8.25 rear. It’s actually not that bad of a axle. I wouldn’t go catching air on the 8.25 & Dana30. But for crawling they’re perfectly fine. Just make sure your geared correctly. My XJ sits on 35’s with 4.88 gears, Detroit lockers, 4:1 transfer case. Dana 44’s. Crawls like a dream.
Staff inspection is my favorite dt episode. Love it. Keep up the good work yall!

"when you blow those holes out you have other holes to go to" - Brad 2k18
I love how Brad tossed that cat regardless 😂 that’s true Bradology Also the tip about every other hole is a good one
Still have some clearance issues (seen at 10:09 ) Time to extend the rear bump stops or start trimming. Or just downsize to 31x10.50's... LOL I agree, the Dana-35 rear is a weak POS (mentioned at 5:05 ) I don't worry much about the later Chrysler 8.25 axles in these XJ's but if you can find an XJ Dana-44 rear for cheap, that would be an easy upgrade. I currently have one under my '91 YJ and have another in my shed. Or with a small amount of work just swap in a Ford 8.8 from an Explorer. Or just throw some money at it and install Dana-60's.
that's a short arm kit, long arm kits relocate the body end of the control arm toward the center of the vehicle for better articulation, handling, and a better ride. I wouldn't recommend any jumping or fast desert driving with that short arm kit since it is still using the weak factory mounts for the control arms. XJs have dana 30s up front and either dana 35, 44, or Christler axles in the back. i would recommend getting a dana 44 from a junkyard for the back, direct bolt on if the gearing is the same and pretty cheap. at least they knew not to go higher than 33s on stock axles though.

when Brad says STAFF INFECTION hahahaha
That’s the shortest “long arm” setup I’ve ever seen 😂
A weekday without a hoonigan video is definitely a miserable day. I love HOONIGAN. All the way from Cape Town, South Africa
Brad could go on tour as a standup comedian. He is a plumber doing mech-a- nic work and a grill master. I guess he works for fun. Make yer own steering linkage if you don't like whats there Brad. Change the rear axles for non spaghetti units. finally feed the cat. He is inspecting.
So, some misinformation. Dude says you'll bend your Dana 30 housing and break your axles with 35s. Incorrect. I ran 35s on a Dana 30 for years. Never broke an axle or had any problem with gears. I ran lunchbox lockers too.

My XJ used to be my third vehicle, currently my only one. I figure with how healthy it's kicking at 200k I'm just going to keep it for a long ass time to save money for another car. Replaced seals front to rear among some other minor things working at a dealership and it came with a new lift but it's Rough Country so I might have to switch to this Rubicon Express.

I had a friend and we did his XJ via junk yard. He bought new tires so not including those it was $350 total for a 4" lift. He still runs the same setup with a 33 tire and its been like 5 years. Jeeps are forever.

Everyone loves XJs!
Bradology, is legit!
I've built a couple Cherokees, and currently doing a Comanche! These vehicles are super capable and budget friendly. Just make sure to keep an eye on the temp gauge with this one! 00-01 Had a different casting for the heads that make it prone to crack, but you can swap heads from 95-99 onto it.
I love brads content lol
I think a series about brad going to a welding school would be cool
Great job on those fenders........
Over under steering, lunch box locker, axle tube housing braces, snorkel, winch, s10 gear box is a really big up grade bolt factory, just a few upgrades it needs. Then it maybe close.
Needs an 8.8 swap, actual long arms cause that's still a short arm lift. Truss the d30, stinkyfab OTK steering and OTA trackbar kit and send it on. I rock crawl my longarmed comanche locked f&r with stock front shafts and have had zero issues. I'd love to see more jeep stuff though!

Bad daddy Braddy ..... short arm kit?!
Not all Dana 30 steering was a y link, the jeep wj, has good steering and the knuckles you would want for a conversion.
@barrishautomotive
6 жыл бұрын
True, although it's a long way from a bolt on. Quite a bit of custom fab to make it work properly.
@16driver16
6 жыл бұрын
barrishautomotive the knuckles and steering? Or the whole axle? Most people I've seen do it replace the knuckles on their Dana 30 with the WJ ones and buy an aftermarket steering setup, I think all you have to do is reem the tie rod holes to accept the new steering but I could be wrong.
@bungcheese5901
6 жыл бұрын
Custom Fab????? You use a WJ lower ball joint and an XJ upper. There is a 1/4" spacer the bolts between the unit bearing and the knuckle. Custom Fab chuckle
@barrishautomotive
6 жыл бұрын
@@bungcheese5901 I've done it. I run this setup on my 99 XJ. Custom steering linkage, custom track bar and brackets, and custom sway bar brackets are all required. Also, if you just bolt the spacer between the knuckle and the bearing you'll die. Do your homework.
@bungcheese5901
6 жыл бұрын
I've done it too I thought we were talking about the knuckles
Thinking of getting those wheels and a lift for my ls swap xj
I like that build.
Daaamn he went off the dock!
I just got myself a 1990 XJ. Already got my 6 inch lift on it but still got alot to do on it.
I love when non jeep guys get a Jeep to work on. They said they were putting long arm suspension on it and I was getting excited... the lift isn’t long arm. Still ridiculously cool. Also that exhaust is gonna get hit by the axle at some point..
Best brad vid , (short arm kit is worse to look at then vins head)
Nelsons jeep be looking like a hummer!
Sketch Daddy Brad... blowing out holes since '76 😎
Brad is a mad man
So he was serious when he said "off the dock." lol, hilarious.
Get c clip eliminators for the rear so when you break an axle the tires don’t come out of the wheel well, you’d have to regear it front and rear to run 35s but you could (obviously there is a high possibility your axles will blow up still) since you don’t have limited slips, you’d want to throw those in as well. I drive a 92 XJ n I love it on 33s with a 4 and a half inch lift, but I’m going to go 35s with a Ford 8.8 in the rear to make sure I’m not just snapping axles all the time. But I’m not a desert racer guy I’m more into the rock crawling scene. Hope the build goes well maybe we’ll see more of the Jeep in the future?
Brad is #clubxj approved for sure
I'm more into the big tires at stock height look. But this is cool too.
Best Content on youtube!
I have personally used bag weights alot with lots of good responses and happy customers
That disclaimer tho hahaha. Good of you guys to put that in there. Was just about to use Bradology on my Fiesta.
Hell yea brad!! Cant belive home boy went off the dock lol
10:25 "Brad can't edit, Brad can barely spell." Lol 😆
The front is a D30, thats a short arm kit, and that isnt a panhard bar. Xjs have track bars and tie rods. Dont use wheel spacers, buy 3.75-4" backspace wheels. There was no need to cut the exhaust. Plenty of us lift our XJs just fine with a stock exhaust.
It looks badass
Thanks for putting out entertaining content every day guys, Brad is becoming one of my favorite people.
Hole talk was real. Half of everything is all you need
I was going to say he needs to widen those flares in the back, halfway there after that dock launch. Nice.
You guys are doing a wide range of cars and trucks keep the videos coming! Thats what the New shop in Texas.. is Rock Crawler Garage!!😂😂
Its a Dana 30 front axle brad lol
Either swap to a more beefy knuckle or put dana 44s. A very very common thing with Cherokees is when they are wheeled hard the knuckles will bend causing a camber in the front tires. And the adjustable ball joints are almost 600 bucks to do
Beautiful 😍. A built XJ is my dream
My high school dream car right here!!!!!!!!!!
I thought Brad was joking when he said he didn't know much about Jeeps lol. Dana 35 is not the front axle, its the rear axle on older XJs and MJs and those are the crappy ones. The 97+ Jeeps like this one have the C8.25 axle, which is about as strong as a Dana 44. Dana 30 front axles on all of them are pretty decent as well and that Jeep could hold 35s, maybe not being thrashed like you guys do though. 33s are probably the safe choice.
I think Brad is the smartest guy there
Is it just me or was that cat fine? XD i love brad

Waffeey it wasn’t
dump the exhaust before the axle, its gonna get smash if you're flexing the rear hard. Nice to see you guys building a cherokee.
HA!!Brad comes with his own disclaimer.
Those balance beads work pretty well. Used them on my old m/t tires that wouldn’t stay balanced with the standard way of weights on the rim. They actually balance really well
