A second energy crisis in 1979 spurred the development of a smaller 4x4 wagon-the All-New Jeep® Cherokee (XJ). It featured a unibody design, compact dimensions and a suspension system influenced by the chief engineer of the Renault Formula 1 racing team. AMC recorded record sales in the 80s and discontinued the CJ-series and introduced an All-New Jeep Wrangler (YJ) in 1986. A year later, in 1987, American Motors Corporation was sold to Chrysler Corporation and the Jeep Brand became a part of Chrysler Corporation’s Jeep/Eagle Division. After its own market research convinced AMC that the future lay in compact SUVs, the automaker pumped $250 million into the design and production of the new compact XJ Cherokee and Wagoneer sports wagons.
XJ designs date back to 1978, when a team of AMC and Renault engineers drew sketches and made clay models from the existing SJ Cherokee, but the all-new XJ series finally made its well-received debut in 1984, when it scored an unprecedented sweep of the "4X4 of the Year" awards by three primary off-road magazines.
The 1984 Jeep® Cherokee was a revolutionary vehicle: 21 inches shorter, 6-inches narrower, 4 inches lower, and 1,000 pounds lighter than the full-size Wagoneer (SJ). It was built with a revolutionary uniframe instead of a traditional chassis-and-frame.
The XJ was the first vehicle with two available 4x4 systems: Command-Trac® Part-Time and Selec-Trac® Full-Time 4x4. XJs have proven enduringly popular with 4x4 enthusiasts for their off-highway abilities and wide availability of aftermarket modifications.
Until 1988, the Cherokee was the only compact SUV to offer both two- and four-door models. Originally fitted with the choice of a 2.5L four-cylinder engine or a 2.8L V6, the venerable 4.0L inline-six engine debuted in 1987.
There were 14 trim models throughout the years: Base, SE, Wagoneer Limited, Briarwood, Pioneer, Pioneer Olympic Edition, Chief, Sport, Country, Classic, Limited, Laredo, Freedom and 60th Anniversary Edition.

Hahaha thankfully never have had a frame issues…I think a lot of people just go with frame stiffeners when they don’t really need them in the first place…now if you have a 2 door and it’s maybe a few years older than ours with some fatigue perhaps. With all the wheeling and 1 tons on our four door we have zero stress cracks…no stuck doors when flexing everything works seamlessly…only mod if you need it really or else you are adding a lot of extra wait for no reason 👍🏻

I’m current doing the same swap is that the stock superduty steering with the pitman arm reamed out for the bigger rod end?

Awesome!! We are running the BDS 5 inch lift springs with Iron Man Fab Shackle relocation and shackles fully adjustable so we were able to dial it in right where we wanted it! So cool to hear about another XJ on tons!
Love the videos. Gets me pumped up for mine! Do you have clearance for a fuel skid? Worried my factor skid and 5" springs are going to cause some binding with the 1" perch stretch.

Rockquest Off-Road rear axle is in and driving. No joke about the brakes. Did you guys retain the BDS track bar for the front?

Rockquest Off-Road thank you for your input. Im in a pinch on parts for the time being I just need it driveable. Is there any reason the BDS bar wouldn't work? I'm only on 4.5" coils. Planning to use superduty steering as well. Thanks rock quest!

No reason why it shouldn’t work great… If anything it’ll be a little bit too long in that case you can easily cut the rod end off shorten it after measuring four times and re-weld it… But it may just fit perfect… We had just had enough of the bushings from that brand wearing out every six months LOL
What drive shafts are you using? The axels look like 99 60’s that’s exactly what I’m putting mine with the arctec truss

We actually had them made at a local driveshaft shop for the front axle just the stock tj rubi 1330 joint at the transfer case and got a conversion u joint for now to the Dana 50...the rear shaft we got a Tom Woods because they knew exactly what flange to meet up the Rocktrac with and the right flange to meet the 2005 steeling pinion flange we had...made life simpler after we got the wrong parts a few times...awesome choice man you will love the Artec
Curious, are these axles narrowed?
Also whats the backspacing on the rims you using? and rubbing issues wheb turning?

No rubbing at all...they get close but not too close....we had to grind a bit from the steering knuckles where the tie rod ends attach to clear the wheel...backspacing is 5.71 inches...American Racing Ansen Off Road Wheels 17x9 part number AR96979087518 really worked well to keep the Jeep sort of normal looking and not super wide
so you did the hydro boost master cylinder? or just the regular Ford master cylinder with your Factory xj booster?

just the regular with the factory XJ booster...you hear all sorts of recomendations on forums but we are installing this and trying it first...I will let you know how it works out...brakes stop great now just a REALLY spongy pedal...which seems like lack of volume of fluid which the new master will remedy

Man wow...it is horrible...I got it first then it went one by one through our family...no joke man it slammed me in bed for 5 days straight...
Where did you buy those wheels? I've been looking and can't seem to find them, they have a excellent backspacing

They are hard to find now since they are not produced any more...in the last 3 months we got a 5th matching wheel for our LJ project...Realtruck.com just put in a 2003 excursion for the vehicle and that will get the 8x170mm and the 5.71 backspacing realtruck.com/p/american-racing-machined-ar969-ansen-off-road-wheels/v/ford/excursion/2003/

Yes they are the factory flares! We just cut them carefully to make the room for the tires to tuck and still look somewhat factory
what size of springs you have in that xj? 6" lift? Nice rig.

Iron Man Fab...its their XJAX kit which includes the shackles and relocation brackets...they are a small group of guys that build them on order so expect 3ish weeks but the work and fit is SO awesome...www.ironman4x4fab.com/product-page/xjax-kit

Awesome! We used the 5 inch BDS springs we already had with the 8.5 inch long arm lift...we removed the 2 inch block and 1 inch shackle and replaced it with Iron Man Fab's XJAX kit shackle relocation (www.ironman4x4fab.com/product-page/xjax-kit) and dialed it in to the perfect shackle angle and lift we needed...absolutely love their parts and the rear flexes just about as much as the front now which it never did before...14-5 inches of wheel travel in rear and 17-18 inches in the front. the iron man stuff takes around 3 weeks to get because they are a small operation that builds kits when they are ordered btw

Using Rustys HD mount and yes stock Superduty steering drag link and tie rod for now for simplicity! Just have to ream the XJ pitman arm for the superduty drag link taper...www.wildhorses4x4.com/product/Tapered_Reamer/Custom_tie_rods you will need this 1-1/2" taper per foot or 7.125 degree included angle reamer for the pitman arm....we are running stock BDS 8.5 inch lift stainless brake lines...they bolted right up to the super duty calipers on our 1999 F250 front end

@@outwheeled633 I would not know that one...ours was out of a 99 and I know they changed the drag link and tire rod style but I dont know if they changed the taper...I owuld imagine its very close if its not identical...just ream slow and test fit until you have it where you want it and crank it down :) That axle is 2.5 inches wider than the one we used in this build also :) good luck!

I will put something together soon on that...btw after getting it together now we have decided to stick with the stock master cylinder etc. brakes work fine actually...just got to get over the spongy pedal but it will lock the tires up so its really fine. The stock superduty steering drag link and tie rod work perfect just had to ream the pitman arm a little bit...ill put up a walk around today or tomorrow :)
What year was the front axle and what coils springs were used?

Yep leaf sprung and 69.25 inches wide instead of the 72 inches wide that the 05+ dana 60s are...helped keep it sane on the width...we used the Artec TJ Superduty swap kit...took some patience with the welding and the clean up of the axle brackets but really made it clean and strong
