Jeep Wrangler YJ Posi-Lock Install

The Jeep Wrangler YJ came with a split front axle that was locked together by a vacuum switch when you put the Jeep in four wheel drive.
The Posi-Lock cable system replaces the vacuum with a cable you actuate in the cabin of the Jeep manually. That way you can be sure it engages every time.

    Mine didn't have instructions book with it so I was hoping your video would be more full installation instructions but you left a lof out such as how to made the cable adjustment. Good video

    I installed one of these a few months back. I didn't even have to drill because I had previously removed my AC and there were two holes in the firewall, complete with rubber grommets, just waiting for the posilock cable. So far it's working great. And the best part in, my OCD rattled brain, the 4x4 light works again!!!

    This thing is great. Especially if ur locked up front and want to disconnect that axel and stay in 4low or whatever in a tight spot. You'll still have power going to that driver side no matter what. Best bang for the buck. And yes we welded our dana 30.. And it hasn't failed us yet. Edit: just got done reading the comments.. fine tuning it to shift correctly is important. You want the collar to smooth over the splines to the inner axel inbetween spiders and the posilock correctly. We used the RToffroad posi disconnect. Plan on going to 37s with a 80s dana 44s. Which also has a disconnect axle. Plan to go the same route.

    Glad it helped. Be sure to test it a lot. Mine got stuck while wheeling and would not engage. I ended up pulling it out and doing a TJ chromoly shaft instead.

    Very good vid, just got my kit in the mail and heading out to install it on an 88 wrangler with a 4 inch lift, when I put it into 4wl to drive in some snow, it seemed like all was well...... Then I noticed the front wheels were not helping at all, so.... After checking the vacuum lines and found they were cracked the fun ended. Now this "fun" can start. Thanks for the vid. You made it sound pretty easy, I hope it is.

    Great video I have installed 2 of these in the last 10 year on Jeeps. I guess its personal choice but I was lucky enough to be able to route my cable on the other side of the steering column but I don't have air conditioning on mine. That black box looking thingy is your brain for the car its called a few different things I go with ECU. Be very careful with those very expensive and becoming hard to find at least for a YJ.

    The instructions will tell you to put it above the transfer case lever with the cable coming out near the throttle cable. However i found even the regular length posilock cable to be very long and it seemed like that was going to be hard to not make the cable kink too much. plus, the exhaust manifold is near there. so like you, i put it just to the side of the light switch. becareful though with this spot. the data vin tag is just under the wiring connector that goes through the firewall. this may not be every year YJ but keep it in mind.

    Hey Man, great video; I just installed this EXACT Posi Lok 2 weeks ago. And, next week, I am taking it OUT; and installing a solid axle, (specifically a G2 Dana 30 YJ Front Chromoly Axle Kit - 98-2031-001). The Posi Lock caused issues; and I could not get the Shift Collar to engage. In fact, it damn near cracked my entire axle. In my opinion, the split axle is a horrible design and creates a weak point where you don't want it. Therefore, this Disconnect Eliminator Kit from G2 is the answer for me. Some people swear by the Posi; but it caused nothing be concern for me.

    The main reason for keeping the split axle is because I have the auto locker. If you only offroad or have a selectable locker up front then going to the full axle shaft is the way to go.

    What type of auto locker do you have? I still think the shift collar will give you problems. But, perhaps if it is adjusted. But, this Jeep is for my 19 yr old son; and I don't want him stranded and trying to adjust things. My main goal is to eliminate issue and safty

    Also that black box that you had to move is the brain box or computer or engine management system for ur Jeep be ware of it as they are pricey to fix/ replace

    Probably a good idea since mine jammed open and would not engage first trip out. I ended up removing it and going with full length axle shaft.

    Does the knob have to be all the way out to engage? Or all the way in to engage.. I purchased a 92 jeep a week ago and the knob has always been out and in 2WD

    its all the way in for axle disconnect. all the way out for axle shaft lock. remember just using the posilock doesnt give you 4x4. it just locks the two split shafts together.

    I am getting rid of all my vac lines except for 4. This system is just begging for failure. I an going this route.

    The electrical box on top of the metal plate is the wiper delay module. Just a little info for you.

    I have a solid axle now because the Posi-Lock did not work. I pulled it out and installed new chromoly axles and bypassed the split axle design.

    I would love to see the posi in real action and driving it and engaging the 4 wheel drive. Just wondering if you gave it a real test drive; not just on the racks.

    I have not gone off road with it yet but have driven with it and it has worked just like it is supposed to. I was a little worried about the fine tuning of the fork engagement but I must have done it right since it is working fine.

    My posi just got all screwed up ... hard to explain in short .... I will keep my old axles just in case I want to try a posi again.

    The posi lock and a spool is the way to go up front if you have this axle

    I ended up removing the two piece axle shafts and went to chromoly one piece shafts for the extra strength. I have a lunchbox locker which has worked really well.

    @@StarkReality you have 33s and a 4cyl? Even with a 6cyl i wouldnt think the extra strength in the shafts is needed at all, ive broke far more r&p on dana 30s

    The vacuum. They only lie. Just joined both axsel. Vacuums are the worst. We all need warn hubs ok. Not all this shit. Are u a kid come on a gay jeep. The worst vehicle all around. Unique. How's about all cruise control is air. Related. And jeep unknown source. But all have there bad n good. It's to bad today people r dieing big time. It's not a weird thing. It's about time to tell your friends. Not posi. Lok only will break only reason fronts in two 900hp. Is a lot. And pulling pulling and pulling. Is a Dodge desil shine. Then rebuild. JEEP.= Just enough esensil parts. This is a Germany. Vehicle built for Hitler. Only young kids in play ground 😂.
