Because the all new FAD or front axle disconnect on a Jeep JL Wrangler is directly tied to the transfer case, removing or deleting it can prove to be a problem, especially if you have a Rubicon. Without the FAD to to tell the transfer case what position it's in, your dash will display a warning light above the fuel gauge that states, "SERV 4WD". On a Rubicon, you will also get a locker warning light that that'll appear intermittently in the same location as well. On top of that, the transfer case indicator on your dash will be grayed out and it will no longer show what position it's in. Fortunately, the transfer case on a JL Wrangler is still mechanically operated but if the computer doesn't know what position it's in, you will not be able to use things like your sway bar disconnect or factory rear locker if you still have one. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see these problems first hand and how we were able to zap the FAD using a Tazer JL, made by Z Automotive. We hope you enjoy.

    Sorry to ask on multiple videos. I just broke my clip on the fad pigtail today. I used some silicone to hopefully hold the pigtail in place. If the pigtail comes off can it cause any damage while in 2wd or when shifting into 4wd? I ordered a new new pigtail today but it wont be in till next Tuesday. Thanks for your help.

    To be clear, we still have a locker, it's just an ARB air locker now. This is why we needed to turn off the setting for the factory locker. This is really a mod you'd want if you have a Sport or Sahara as it will give you a bigger ring and pinion and bigger axle shafts and a locker.

  • @wayalife

    Depends on how you plan on using your Jeep I suppose. A Sahara will still not have a 4:1 transfer case or electronic sway bar disconnect and really, the rear axle on a Rubicon seems to be okay and so there's no need to replace it. To add all those things at a later date and with aftermarket parts would cost a LOT more.

    Having such a dilemma right now I have time but I’ve wanted a rubi for so long mainly because of the lockers but a buddy of mine bought the Sahara for the nice stuff and next year plans to upgrade drivetrain. Now I’m trying to decide if that’s a better choice I was all bought in with the prorock after the informative videos. But it does away with the locker abilities? I guess I’m not as knowledgeable as I hoped. Would it in fact be basically the same if ultimately you were gonna swap the axles anyway. Or can you add lockers after the fact. So long comment. Awesome info as always!!

  • @wayalife

    @wayalife

    5 жыл бұрын

    If you can afford a Rubicon, I would highly recommend it. Better axles are only PART of the solution and really, the rear axle seems to be fine or, so far as we can tell. With a Rubicon, you still get a 4:1 transfer case and electronic disconnect and really, that's worth having. Something you can't get later for less.

    What I can tell you is that I've tried doing it both ways, first in 2007 with a Rubicon, later in 2009 with a Sport and then in 2012, when it was time to try again, I got a Rubicon and because of what I had found. In the end, it costs a LOT more to try and add things like a 4:1 transfer case and e-disco especially if you're keeping your rear axle.

    Oh, you could easily just unbolt the FAD unit from the axle and strap it to the frame rail. That would do the trick without having to make anything. We should be able to get this resolved soon as well.

    No. Not directly anyway. Unfortunately, everything is tied into the computer on the JL and the FAD sends a signal to the transfer case to let it know what position it's in. Without this signal, you cannot use any of the other push button features such as the sway bar disconnect or rear locker like we have or at least, not without something like a Tazer.

    Wayalife why did you switch to an air locker up front instead of an e-locker? Seems silly to change and then use up an additional switch and complicate things more. Also, can you not use the factory front locker wiring to activate a solenoid for the front locker and trick the computer into thinking it still has an e-locker? That would get rid of the Serb/ 4wd warning light.

    @Jeovanni Gutierrez So far, we've not seen a need to replace the rear axle and until or unless a needs arises where we need to address the locker, we'll just keep the OEM e-locker there.

    Correction on the mechanical transfer case I had an electrical issue and had no 4 wheel drive. It was not a mechanical issue, needed a new rear wiring harness.

  • @wayalife

    @wayalife

    Not sure how that's possible. There are mechanical links connecting the transfer case shifter to the transfer case, this as opposed to the transmission which is all shift by wire. We literally had ZERO electrical connection to the transfer case and was still able to engage 4WD

    @@wayalife When the harness failed, I had no gas gauge, lockers, 4wheel drive, TPMS, or temperature and it threw all those codes every time it was started. Took the dealership a month and a half to figure out what was wrong.

    I have no doubts that you're dash showed you had no 4WD but the shifter is mechanical and to the point where it'll grind gears if you don't do it right. I can assure you that you would have had 4WD regardless of what your dash showed.

    @@wayalife Same code u had "service four wheel drive" and when I would shift into 4H or 4L it wouldn't illuminate on the dash and would not engage I promise. If u dont believe me unplug the rear half of ur harness along the frame rail by the passenger rear wheel and unmarry the tazer.

    So how do you lock the front now ?

  • @wayalife

    @wayalife

    It's always locked just like it was on the JK and TJ before. All we did was install a new axle that doesn't have an FAD. The fad was to help with fuel economy - that's it.

    I just re-read your question and if you're meaning our locker, we now have an ARB and it uses an air compressor to activate it. We have it wired up to our aux switches.

    That should be an easy fix. Just plug in whatever the computer expects to see at the FAD, e.g. most likely a resistance value or voltage drop.

    That’s just too much BS for a Jeep. The Jeep life is supposed to be simple and rugged. This looks too much like chasing down bugs in a typical programmer job. I think Jeep life ended with the JK. Good effort in trying to stay current with these guys Eddie.

    Replacing both axles, putting in a lift, adding winches, replacing tire carrier, adding lockers, then lights...... all complicated procedures that were done on older Jeeps too.
