Had a similar problems recently.. Had replaced the belt and a bunch of pulleys and bearings, yet still had a squeal. The harmonic balancer was fine... problems was the belt tensioner wasn't adding enough tension. On the side of the tensioner is two notches that the tensioner arm's notch needs to sit somewhere in the middle of.

No apology necessary and great video as always, Darryl. While owning an older vehicle like our TJs can be frustrating at times, the ease of repair and the smile it puts on our faces when when drive it (or look at it for that matter) makes ownership worthwhile. It's a Jeep thing that most people won't understand. 🍻

@@DarrylSheather What about a 94 honda civic? I recently put a rebuilt engine in my civic and I ran it with no belts for a few seconds and it makes a squealing noise and it increases with rpms and at a low rpm it is not as loud. The balancer does have some miles on it along with age. I just can figure out where the squeal is coming from.

Oh, the joys of owning and driving an older Jeep. Still wouldn't trade it for anything! Good job as always Darryl 👏. It will eventually be a new Jeep again lol.

@@DarrylSheather so very true. Anything electronic is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Also, these TJ's are usually really easy to work on no matter what the problem is. Love your series and your overlanding videos. Stay safe.

I did the same thing you did.. I replaced tensioner /all bearings, my squeak was more a 2 squeeks per second. After a while the squeek came back but was less. I used a stethoscope (again) and found the most noise coming from the bottom of the engine. (listening to the front of the oil pan).. That noise went up through the Water pump. So, I put on a new Pro water pump. Noticed that the old pump was NOT in bad shape :) ... Looking at your previous video (and I have never seen your videos before).. I can somewhat see a little play in your harmonic balancer on your intro clip (i think).. This is what I noticed on mine. By placing a stationary object on my harmonic balancer outer ridge, I noticed it pulsing a little, and also a tiny bit out toward the front. the pulsing somewhat matched the squeek. Now I don't know how that squeek happens, but I'm sure that has us all wondering about this ODD squeak. Anyway, that was it. I didn't know there was a rubber ring on a balancer that held it together. Another good thing to learn. Your video was Good to see that someone else had the Exact same problem, and followed the Exact same process of elimination. :)

same exact thing happed on my 98 XJ, turns out the harmonic balancer was clipping my fan so i had to replace it. Did not fix my belt squeal, i replaced my idler pully, did not fix issue. found out its my power steering pully making the sound lol. At least shes got all new pullies now!

Man, I think you might have finally helped me diagnose the issue on my 97 TJ! Belt rides at the front of the fan/water pump pulley (and has already slipped off the front once, so I replaced the belt), crank pulley does seem to wobble, and there's belt chirp (even with a new belt installed) that I can't seem to locate. Thank you!

I painted a white mark(line) across the faces of the balancer and run it for a time while noise or rattle is heard. Stop the engine and see if the line is now out of alignment. A timing light would have showed the TDC mark off to
