Led Halo Headlights and fog lights install for a wrangler jk and jku. I purchased these off Amazon to try out. I apologize for the somewhat poor lighting. It is on my to-do list to put shop lights in my garage. This is a tutorial on how I wired my LED halos to come on with my jeep when the key is turned to the run position.

    Just installed the same setup on my '14 Sahara. Looks great on the white jeep. two items that I wanted to share with you and the group 1. You don't need to remove the bottom pan to put the fog lights in. I went through the exercise of pulling it down but ended up using my cell phone in selfie mode to see the screws for the fog lights from the top. Sitting on a cooler is a hell of a lot easier for this old guy to work than laying on my back. 2. The connections provided for the fog lights tend to just pull apart even with applying pressure to connect them. I ended up putting a wire tie across both pieces through the output wires and pulled snug. Ain't moving now. Great video and I learned a lot about the install due to the one page directions provided sucked. Oh, I did seal both sets with a silicone sealant before installing, good call,.

    Used your link and purchased these lights. I installed them today along with a Smittybilt XRC Gen2 Front Bumper. The bumper was actually pretty quick, the lights took me a little longer. Total time for all was about 3 1/2 hours, not too bad. Thanks for the video, I'm very happy about the new look! Next is either xrc armor fenders or bumper, either way they are all coming eventually...

    Glad I can help! I was just looking into bumpers. Just keep dumping more and more money into it...Just a little tip, I did have one headlight leak from washing with pressure washer (didn;'t leak during a rain). They sent me two replacements even though I only needed one. I ended up drying that one out and sealing both with clear silicone where the lense meets the housing. Haven't had an issue since ( and now I have a backup set). Fog lights I haven't touched, only had a little condensation when first used. Might be worth the 30 mins to do the same

    I have another question. I connected my headlight "halo" wire to my under hood fuse box accessories location with a fuse tap so they light up with the ignition switch. Since then my halos are causing bad FM interference. I unplugged the halos from the fuse box and cut on the headlights and the interference was gone so I know it's my halos. Do you know of a fix for this interference?

    Yeah...only downfall of some leds. You can buy those snap on ferrite ring core and clip them onto that wire (I believe closer to the light the better). Just do some trial and error, because too many can wake it worse. Right after adding them my radio still wasn’t like before. But it has gotten significantly better over time since I installed them. I just bought an assortment pack on amazon for like $10.

    Brian Skalman I ended up never installing the switch to turn off the daytime halos. I never actually found a reason why I would ever turn the halos off and didn’t have a place for the switch. However, If I were to do so, I’d do exactly what you said. Those halos should be such low amperage that a relay is not necessary. Just keep a small fuse in the add-a-circuit (~5A, probably even less).

    I have the same lights and am about to install. I plugged everything in and did a temp connection for the signals and halos and all good. I also test for the headlights in the mounts and the drivers side installs tight but OK. The passenger won't fit. I saw the still pic in the bid showing where you shaved the bucket. Did you take the bucket out? Was that one square mount area the only thing that gets on the way? It almost feels like the rear fins on the headlight are in the way? Help please! Also is the spot you shaved on the top left when the bucket is installed? Thanks

    I left the bucket in when I shaved it. It was fairly close to fitting, so I am pretty sure I just shaved it down with a very sharp knife. I have also seen people shave down the actual headlight part instead. I've put my old headlights back in after I shaved the headlight bucket and they still fit fine. I believe that one square mount was the only thing that was in the way for me. Yes, The spot I shaved was the top left when installed. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions/concerns!

I thought that the fogs lights can be turned on with theheadlights. the fog lights seem to have another wire (blue) from the harness when I am assuming is for the halos to be on....??? That’s odd... mine has a loose yellow wire that is for halos. Regardless of the color of the loose wire, it should be for the halos... and isn’t even required to be hooked up at all for operation of the fog lights...if possible I would try reaching up there, disconnecting the fog lights and testing your old fog lights or just one new fog light at a time.... it is not making sense to me how your situation is possible.. but what I said is what I’d start with

  • @tybonez3646

    @tybonez3646

    It wouldn’t be simple to have it so your halos are off when headlights are on. You would have to create a controller and piggy back it in with the actual headlight harness to tell it when power is sent to hi/lo beams to basically turn off power to halos. Or wire a physical switch between the halo wire and the fuse box or wherever you are supplying power to the halo then put the switch inside where you could toggle it manually to turn them off.... BUT I believe the halos are powered on when headlights are on regardless of the little halo wire is actually connected to power or not.. I could be wrong, I forget. I have a different set of headlights installed for now and have these ones packed in a box somewhere for moving or I would test that theory for you

    Just to be clear - if I just tap my halos into the turn signal, the halos will only come on when I have my parking lights on. But if I run my halos directly to the fuse box, they will always be on, whenever the vehicle is on? Thanks and sorry, never done any wiring before.

    Where exactly did you splice in the drl from the fog light? Do you run the fog halo to the exact place as the headlight halo on the amber turn signal?

  • @tybonez3646

    @tybonez3646

    6 жыл бұрын

    Ross Silva all four DRL are spliced together to one single wire running to the fuse box, they come on when the jeep comes on then. All four of my halos are connected near the fuse box before going into it. Then the headlights turn signal function is spliced into far wire from the black wire on your turn signal light for. If you want them to come on with your parking lights (first turn of the knob so tail lights and yellow lights on the front) then you splice passenger drl (headlight and fog light) both into middle wire of turn signal (that is the parking light). Then do the same for the turn signals as before. The fog lights don’t have the amber turn signal function, just the drl so they are only wired to the fuse box in my case (again if u want them to come on with the parking lights then you would splice them into the middle wire of turn signal lights)... hopefully that helps.. please ask more questions if you need or if my explanation is confusing. Thanks!

  • @tybonez3646

    Neither. They are grounded through the headlight harness (black is ground, the blue and white wires are hi/low beams on the H4 adapter harness). You don’t have to run a ground wire separately for the halos. For these particular headlights theres two extra little wires. One is + for halos, the other is + for turn signal. You don’t have to use the headlight turn signal at all if you don’t want.

If you do have automatic headlights, and daytime running lights (US wranglers don’t, but can be programmed to) the headlight AND halo will come on. Not just the halo. Do you by chance have a non US Jeep? I believe Canada and elsewhere the Jeep is programmed from factory to have daytime running lights. Meaning the headlights are on no matter what when in drive gears. Or your jeep was programmed to do this. If your headlights came on in drive with the stock headlights too, this would make sense. Since these headlights pretty much act as DRL. You can go to a dealer and have them turn off this function for a few or use a programmer like OBDJscan. I used OBDJscan (phone app) and a Bluetooth OBD reader from Amazon to program my Jeep for tire size, backup camera, hard top functions, and more. Total was like $35 for the reader and for 1 vin licenses to use OBDJscan. Now if you don’t have daytime running lights from factory..... then I am not entirely sure what’s going on, but sounds like yours is programmed like this from factory.

  • @tybonez3646

    Yes! That is exactly what you would do. However just know that doing it this way the DRL would ONLY come on when those amber lights are on. I know people who did it that way to have control of when they wanted the DRL on by just turning on the parking lights on (front amber lights and brake lights) By wiring them to the fuse box as I did, they come on no matter what as soon as I turn the key to the Jeep to the run position. Either way works and is fine, just personal preference on which you prefer. Feel free to ask more questions if you need!

    Okay so I ended up just doing what you did and wiring to the fuse box. But now I have a problem, the driver side light won’t consistently work, it actually only works when i twist and turn it while it’s out of the headlight hole. I ordered more of the same lights and was gonna send the bad one back, but the new ones are doing the same. I also tried using the new H4-h13 adapters, still bad. So I think it’s prolly more of the wiring behind the headlights, maybe the connection that’s goes into the adapter. Not sure if you’ve experienced this or not but thought you might have some insight. And now that I think about it, the driver side headlight was always going off and on when I had the stock lights in, but I just bought this 2007 jk and wanted new lights anyways.

    @@scweeb1101 my guess would be corrosion inside the headlight connector from your jeep or the female pin is bent/expanded too much. I had a fog light that would randomly turn off or get really dim if I hit a bump or something. It turned out to be the adapter wire harness the ground pin had pushed out of the connector slightly when I plugged it into the fog light. Few months later it did the same thing, however this time the one pin hole was corroded and larger than it should be from being exposed to my tires hitting it with water and other road debris (I switched to a 10th anniversary bumper and the fog lights are now right in front of the tires). I just took it off and scrapped out the corrosion with a needle, then bent the pin slot back out so it would contact the pin when connected. The reason why your stock headlights stayed on more or you didn’t notice as much is with the standard old style bulb holds power energy in it (when you turn it off it dims quickly instead of just instantly turning off). With LEDs if it loses connection even for a fraction of a second it will go out, since they require little power and just enough power to turn on. Therefore, I would look at your headlight connector/ wiring on your Jeep and not so much the headlights since you’ve tried two sets. Again my guess would just be the connector needs cleaned/one of the pin slots is bent or pulled slightly out off the connector. Worse case you have bad wiring/ground somewhere but I doubt it. Most likely corrosion or something bent in the connector causing intermittent connection loss. Let me know if you figure it out or if you have more questions!

    rodney fredrick my guess would be that you had day time running lights before installing these lights. If that’s the case, unfortunately there’s no easy fix. Turning off that daytime running light feature in the jeeps computer would solve your issue (halo ring on, headlight beams off). You could TRY to have the dealer disable that feature, but Ive heard they won’t. Another option is an AEV procal, or superchips flashcal. You can sometimes pic a procal on eBay for ~$100 but be careful as they are vin locked unless the Jeep was returned back to stock settings if the procal is used. There is also this new Bluetooth app that has been gaining popularity that is also a programmer. Search wrangler programmer phone app on KZread. Jk gear and gadgets does an in-depth view about it and it’s about $48 total. The halos on these led lights basically bypass the jeeps computer system and to just turn on when power is to the Jeep. In the US that’s not a problem as we don’t have mandatory DRL. In Canada and other locations it is mandatory so it’s programmed into the computer to turn on headlights while driving as DRL. I don’t think there’s another way around it, but I’m not too familiar with factory DRL option. Wish I could help you more man.

    I wired my new lights up as you showed (thanks very much by the way) and it was all working great. Tonight, however, for some reason the 10 Amp fuse in the Fuse Tap blew twice, so I lost my DRL's. At the same time, the halos on the headlights started flickering, but only when the car was running, not when it was off. Those things may not be connected in any way, but wondered if you had seen this? I have a feeling I may have a bad wire connection that is tripping the fuse, but just thought I would ask. Thanks again...great video. Extremely helpful as my son and I got to spend an afternoon working on the Jeep!. Good times.

    If they were working fine for a while and just started to blow the fuses, I'd say you have a bad connection somewhere. To me it sounds like its grounding out on the body of the Jeep somewhere. Did you tape up the spade connections? I would trace all the wires to make sure there's not a cut or the protective casing is rubbed off the wire on the body of the Jeep. I would also check the halo wire coming from the headlight, as it is pretty thin. If you still cant find the issue, I would turn the halos on and put in a small fuse (I think I have 7.5 Amp in mine and just never changed it, but 5 Amp should be more than enough) and wiggle the wires for the halos to see if you can trace the source of the issue. Being that you said they only flickered while running gives me the thought that the halo power wire is only grounding out from the vibration. I've also heard of rodents chewing the protective casing off the wires for whatever reason. The halo circuit is grounded through the ground pin on the headlight harness. I have had pins push through the harness before and cause an intermittent connection, but this would not explain the blown fuses. If you still cannot trace the problem it COULD be the headlights themselves. The seller should be able to send you some replacements. Glad I could help! Let me know what the issue was if you find it!

    @@tybonez3646 Thanks for the help. You were right..one of the spade connections was not taped up all the way and must have been hitting something. I did that and no blown fuses this week and the flicker appears to be gone. I was wondering if you knew if I might be able to add another DRL to this fuse and it would still work? Right now I have a Quadratec set of 3 orange lights in the grill (www.quadratec.com/p/quadratec/pre-runner-led-light-bar-kit-jeep-wrangler-jk) that I have hooked to the side markers so they come on with parking lights or full lights, but was thinking it may look nice to splice those in too? I also have some turn signals that are LED that have running lights vertically, but not sure how much all this may add. Doesnt seem like a lot, but was just curious? @@bradaldis9037 technically you SHOULD be fine as the required amps for LED lights are very low. as long as you run a fuse that is less amps than the rated max amps for the wiring used, you could try running it all on one circuit. However not knowing the amp draw of everything that would be on that circuit, it’s hard to give you a definite answer. Could always use another add-a-circuit tap

    Zachary Klosterman so when you plug in the fog lights and try to turn them on they won’t illuminate at all? The wire sticking out with the plug is the halo positive wire. They should work regardless of that wire, just not the halo.

    you likely have a Jeep that is not from the US. Other areas require daytime running lights while driving. To disable the low beam automatically coming on while driving, you will need a programmer to disable it. I recommend OBDJscan and a bluetooth OBD II reader that is supported by the Jscan app. Both are relatively cheap and there are other youtube videos that explain the app in depth.

    It is possible you used too big of a splicer causing it to not actually cut the wire jacket and not let it touch the metal wire inside. Make sure your headlights are plugged in and the turn signal bulbs are also plugged in when you test. The ground for the halos is run through the headlight harness. Also make sure you tapped in to the correct wire (red and white wire I believe and its the opposite end of the black wire). The middle white wire is the parking lights. You can also take the turn signal wire from the headlight and touch it to +12v to confirm that the amber part works for the halo. Good Luck!

    Cody Pollock all you really need is: 1) flat head screw driver 2) philips head screwdriver (fog lights) 3) T15 torx screwdriver for the headlights 4) 16-18 gauge wire (If wiring to fuse box) 5) mini add-a-circuit (usually comes with assortment of fuses) 6) wire strippers (I use my teeth) plyers to crimp 7) optional: 2x wire taps, mine were 18-22 gauge wire (found them at auto parts store). These are nice so you don’t have to cut your turn signal wire. 8) electrical tape or heat shrink 9) optional: soldering iron 10) drill with 1/8” bit to drill out the plastic screw fasteners (replaced with Crown 6502625 off Amazon. Like $1.75 a piece) I believe that is all. NOTE: HIGHLY recommend sealing around the headlights with clear silicone (where the clear plastic is adhered to the black headlight frame). I had a headlight leak after washing (seller replaced no issue) then after I sealed both with silicone I haven’t had a problem.

    Michael Busher Nice! I still have the 7.5 in it right now no problem. But you could easily go down to a 5 or even 3 if you wanted. LEDs need the smallest amount of current to operate.. just make sure your fuse is rated higher amps than the fuse, so the fuse blows before the wire melts. I believe 18 gauge is rated for 13 amps... sorry for the long reply lol

I know I used at least 3. 2 on the halo wire right where it comes from the headlight and a third midway to fuse box. I think the idea is to have them closest to the interfering source, which are the halos (I think the fog lights when turned on interfered even more, but I never used them. Just the halo)

Smallish flathead screwdriver to remove the body clips to remove the grille Somewhat Optional: 6. Male and Female Spade Connectors - 18 Gauge (This headlight kit gave me some shorter wires that already had these connectors on them that I just didn't want to use because I would needed to lengthen them to reach fuse box, and the two different wires connected together would have bothered me...but also I have had different halo headlights that had the opposite spade connector, so I had to change them out to work.) 7. Some pliers or wire crimper would be helpful to crimp those spade connectors and the add-a-circuit 8. Heat Shrink Tubing (I just have an assortment of pre-cut pieces) - you could get away with just electrical tape but I discourage it 9. Soldering Iron and solder - You could use crimp butt connectors but I do not like them.. 10. Wire stripper - I use my teeth...... 11. Zip ties to secure wiring - you could just electrical tape it to existing wiring in your Jeep. 12. Clip-on Ferrite Ring Core (I had some decent radio interference when my halos were on, these helped reduce the EMI noise that LEDs can transmit through wiring. Trial and error placement on the halo wiring to see what helped the already crappy radio reception) 13. Replacement push pins if you destroy them on bumper cover (link in description) I don't think i'm forgetting anything, but I also did this over a year ago.... Just the halos flicker not the actual low beam or high beam? How do you have your halos wired? If it’s the halos only flickering and you have them wired to your marker lights, I’d try them straight to 12v + source (fuse block or just test straight from battery) and see if they do the same. My guess is the CAN-bus system in the jeep isn’t supplying the halo LEDS with steady current. The headlights should have built in anti-flicker harnesses that help supply a steady flow of juice from the Jeeps computer system.
