Jeep GC WK2 D1S HID Headlight Bulb Change Tips

Not a full tutorial, just some tips on how to change the HID bulb on your WK2
*Important* Yes you can access the bulbs from the round access holes in the wheel wells, but if you have big hands or don't want to risk bumping the light bulb this is the way to go.
**Bulb suggestion. Do NOT buy the Kensun bulbs. Get the Osram CBI. Way better bulb. I changed these bulbs back to Osram. Same process to change osram as Kensun.

My wife and I followed your instruction video. It's my wife. Her hands are smaller. Anything went as planned. Great job with the video. Highly recommend others follow our or it. Dealer wanted $650 to replace one bulb. I got two D3S HID bulbs at Prep Boys for 102 each plus about an hour of our time. Mic dump.

Had seen this video briefly, thinking it didn't apply to my problem, but after being sold the H11 Bulb Replacement for my 2013 GC Overland, was annoyed after all the prep finding it as an HID. Back to the shop and then went ISO of this video again. Created my own path to the bulb, but then couldn't remove it and that one part of the video (lever) saved the day. Wife thinks I'm great mechanic, but had to tell her it was KZread? Guess I can be impressed with my research and remembering your vid contribution. LOL.Thanks Much

At first I didn’t think this video was helpful. But once I tried working my big ol mits around that little space, it all made sense the way you explained it. One thing I did (I’m not sure if this is part of the recall fix they bolted to your model-year jeep). That electrical box ,with the 4 red tabs in your video, can be moved over if you can unbolt it. I used an 8mm ratcheting socket with an elbow to get it done. It just gives you a little more wiggle room in that area. Thanks again for the video, it was a great help and saved me some cash at the dealer!

Alrighty. Just changed both headlights for the first time in my 2013 GC Limited. Here are my tips. First of all, buy good bulbs. The Osram bulbs are OEM and can be purchased from Amazon for $45-$55 each. The $55 version is the 66140 bulb and is more expensive because you can authenticate the bulb. The cheaper 66144 is an older model that doesn't have the same authenticity verification. I bought the 66144 and they seem to be genuine. Apparently counterfeit bulbs are an issue. As is usually the case with car maintenance, you should replace things in pairs. Moving on. First things first. Read this whole comment before doing anything. Anyone who says you can use the wheel wells has either never done this or has tiny GI Joe hands and arms with an extra elbow. Forget it. Just go through the engine bay. It is wisest to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery before doing all this just to be safe. The driver's side is easier. Remove the plastic engine cover (it just pulls off) and the air filter housing. It's also easier to get the air filter housing off if you first loosen the flathead screw that tightens the hose clamp that holds the air filter housing to the cylindrical air duct. If you also pull upward (not too hard) on the air duct it will pop off the mount. This makes everything a little easier as well. Just make sure to push it back down on reassembly. Pull the top off the air filter housing by unsnapping the two metal clamps on the right side, remove the filter, and pull up on the bottom of the air filter assembly to get it off the three mounts. This takes some force. Be careful when it pops off to not damage the nearby engine components. Once its off the mounts carefully remove it. It's tricky but it comes out. Now to the bulb. Remove the rubber cover and set aside, but somewhere you'll see it and not forget to put it back on. Feel around for the lever that releases the bulb and rotate it upwards. Pull the bulb out. You'll get some resistance from the metal "fingers" that secure the bulb to the housing. Just wiggle it loose and pull. you won't get far because of the cable connected to the bulb. When it starts to pop out ease up so as not to damage the wiring that it's connected to. No one tells you this, but the connector to the bulb can be a pain. If there's an easy trick I don't know it. Basically, there's a tab on either side of the connector that has to be released at the same time you start to push the bulb off. I used a flathead screwdriver to accomplish this. BE GENTLE. If you screw up that connector you have bigger problems. Once the bulb is off, set it aside and put nitrile gloves on if you aren't already wearing them. Open the new bulb, inspect it for obvious flaws and damage. You'll have to decide if you want to connect the bulb before or after you insert it in the housing. Maneuvering your brand new $50 bulb into the housing while it is connected is tricky but possible. The choice is yours. WHEN YOU INSERT THE BULB IN THE HOUSING (metal "fingers") MAKE SURE IT SNAPS COMPLETELY INTO PLACE. WHEN YOU RE-ENGAGE THE LEVER/CLAMP MAKE SURE THE BULB REMAINS PROPERLY SECURED IN PLACE. **I thought I had a bad bulb but it turned out it wasn't seated properly and was basically just hanging in there loose because the lever mechanism actually pushed it off. As a result it appeared dim and misaligned.** Replace the rubber cover making sure its all the way seated all the way around. If you want to test your bulbs first you'll have to wait until you do the other side, so maybe don't put your air filter housing back together yet. The passenger side is more difficult. The best bet is to move the component(s) attached to the front of the vehicle visible at 00:46. In this video there is only one module. Mine has two. One is secured via a plastic trim fastener and the other is a metal clip. A pry tool is best for the fastener and a flathead will easily release the other. If you're gentle you can re-use the fastener. If it breaks take it to an auto parts store to replace it. Move them out of the way and grab a wrench/socket. AGAIN: DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. I believe it's an 8mm that will release the three bolts holding the PCM to the bracket. Gently shift the PCM out of the way. Once this is done it's WAY easier to access the bulb. The bulb installation process is now the same. I would suggest that maybe connecting the new bulb be done after it is seated and locked in place. It's hard to maneuver the new bulb while connected. Put the PCM back together, not to forget the wire (ground?) that was connected to the rightmost of three bolts. Reconnect your battery and cycle your lights on. DO NOT START YOUR ENGINE IF YOU HAVEN'T PUT YOUR AIR FILTER BACK TOGETHER. The big lesson was making sure the bulbs are seated and locked in place before reassembling. I got super stressed thinking I had a serious problem after my passenger light looked bright and beautiful and my driver's side (which was actually the bulb that went bad that started the whole process) looked dull and misaligned. I thought I either had a counterfeit bulb or bigger problems. When I took it back apart it was basically just hanging there. Also, you may be tempted to remove the plastic trim panels above the headlights thinking they give you access. No idea about the driver's side, but the passenger side DOES NOT. Don't waste your time. And as the video says, make sure you're connecting the bulbs with the correct cable orientation. A visual inspection of the old bulbs, still connected, will show you which way the cable has to be oriented. This will make sense once you see how the cable/connector is constructed. But just to double check, compare the old and new bulb connectors to see they are identical. they should be.

BEST VIDEO of this procedure. Thanks. This video allowed me to save $300+. I watched this in the parking lot of my jeep dealership and did the job there in less than an hour. Without the video this would have taken me much longer to figure out. His explanation in the video is very detailed and spot on. Listen closely to the bit about how the bulbs clip in. This is very important to get it done properly and quickly... The jeep techs were billing 1.4 hours labor for both bulbs at $125/hr + an absurd amount for the parts. I bought the “CougarMotor HID Xenon Headlight Replacement Bulbs - D1S - 35W 6000K (Pack of two bulbs) - 2 Yr Warranty” on amazon delivered to my door for $29! THIS DOES TAKE SOME EFFORT AND PATIENCE. Not exactly a novice project buy I feel like anyone with the incentive to save $300-400 and just a bit of mechanical inclination can do it. TRY IT! Worst case you end up having the dealer do it with your bulbs and still save $100+ on the parts... My bulbs are working and look fine in daylight but I haven’t tested them at night yet...

This helped me understand the two mechanisms: 1-metal clips around square bulb housing and 2- more importantly the plastic ring that is turned to remove the old bulb and then again in reverse to finally secure the new bulb. Clay Elliott i think I would’ve had the job done in an hour as well, but I spent a good 30 minutes trying to make sure the bulb was in correctly. It just felt very loose when you initially seat it back in the housing. I learned out of pure frustration that you have to press the bulb firmly into place then flip the clamping mechanism down to hold it. It was worth the wait as I didn’t destroy a bulb or the housing itself! I shopped the bulbs on amazon as well.

Thanks for the video! One comment though. You mention how it clips in, but my 2011 GC Overland had these metal prongs around the square part of the bulb. I figured out that there was a clip that I had to release in order for it to come out. It is just past the prongs and I felt it with my thumb and lifted up counter clockwise and then the bulb released. I found it easier to put the wire connector back on before trying to get the bulb back into the metal prongs and then I pushed back down on the clamp to hold the bulb in place and I was all done. It took a little bit before I figured out that there was a clamp beyond the metal prongs. This video was very helpful !! Thank you!!!

It's hard to explain but the headlights basically only run brights all the time. There is a small reflector that blocks some of that light and that's how you get your low beam and you turn on your high beams. The reflector moves out of the way and allows the full beam to go out

The plastic surround that holds the bulb in place goes around the square box in the back of the bulb that you're seeing. There are ridges on it like tabs that you will grab on and do a quarter turn to allow that to come off. First remove the rubber boot then turn the tab surround then the bulb should come straight out. some people like to go in through the wheel well other people like me prefer to go in through the top and reach around to get it. if it's really hard for you just take the front bumper off about a 30 minute job or less if you get good

There's a little round plastic ring with teeth on it that you have to turn to release the bulb from the socket. if you pull up pictures of the headlights for sale on eBay or somewhere you will see what the back looks like.

Todd Richmyre there is but for some with bigger hands it's not the right way to get to the bulb. If you have a small hands it's really easy that way. I don't recommend it though because there's a lot of dust in the wheel well that you can have transfer onto the bulb as you're trying to put it in versus coming in from the top
