Jeep Control Arm Bushings - TIPS & TRICKS TO CURE DEATH WOBBLE

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I tackle how to remove and replace upper control arm bushings on a Dana 30 front axle. This axle is found in many Jeeps including the Grand Cherokee ZJ and WJ, Cherokee XJ, and Wrangler TJ JK and JL.
The Jeep in this video is a 2001 Grand Cherokee WJ and it had DEATH WOBBLE. Replacing these worn out control arm bushings cured the death wobble and tightened up the entire feel of the front end.

NOTE For future reference: The bushings are 'stepped', meaning the diameter of the bushing is not the same across the entire length of the area (sleeve) that is pressed into the axle 'ear'. On the LEFT/drivers side, the bushing will only press in to the first step, leaving about a half inch of sleeve sticking out. This is normal. On the passenger side, the bushing holes in the ear are slightly different diameters allowing the bushing to press all the way in. The bushings themselves are the same part number and both press in from left to right. And in case you're wondering, left & right are determined from the perspective of the drivers seat looking out the front of the vehicle. Doesn't matter if you have a left hand or right hand drive vehicle, the orientation will be the same. That is the global industry standard.

I am on my 4th WJ and have had varying degrees of death wobble on every one of them. I have two WJs currently, an 03 Overland daily driver and my love a red 04 Overland, lifted, tires, 4.56 gears, motor, trans, it's my Jeep ( just empty every pocket). I have been chasing DW on the 03 ever since I bought it, watched this video and it is the BEST video on DW. Opened my eyes to components I intuitively replaced on other WJs and thought I could get- by-with on the 03. Visited your Amazon store last night for parts. Great information, keep them coming.

Tackled the driver side yesterday. The lower arm swap was easy enough to build up my confidence. The upper arm came out quite easy boosting my confidence even more. Then came removing the upper, front bushing. Quite the humbling experience. The 3 pound hammer and cold chisel technique is NOT the fastest/easiest/least frustrating way to go. The passenger side will wait until I can borrow an air hammer. 3 hrs total with around 2 1/2 of those pounding away to remove the bushing.

I had a friend help and we removed the axle completely (easy on a 2wd). We froze the new bushings. We had both axle bushings totally replaced in about 4 minutes. Old ones came out easy with a few good swings from a big hammer and new ones tapped in quick. My transmission jack was great for supporting and moving around the front axle.

Hey dude on my 1999 WJ with the 4.0 42Re I changed out my starter and ever since then I’ve had a unresponsive throttle at times the 42Re shifts good and is working great but I have to give it like a quarter throttle or more at times to drive around and when I hit 45 it’s harder than usual to stay at that speed as when I let go it shifts down and starts slowing down I’m gonna check out my IAC like you mentioned before and go from there

Hey. Thank you for the video. I'm at the part where I'm trying to install the upper control arm but it doesn't line up. I'm a complete newbie. What did you mean by the tower where the upper control is mounted? Did you mean around the inlet itself? I have an 08 jk and I can't seem to get it right. I'm so close by lifting the differential housing with a jack and the 2 front wheels off the ground but it's missing not even 3/16" of an inch to the side

I wonder if that will stop the wobble I get, I feel like my jeep rocks side to side when I turn or go on a bump. It's not a death wobble but feels like I am on a boat when I go over a bump or dip.

Hey, I removed the whole axle out, and somehow connected the upper and lower control arms. I had removed everything including the track bar, steering stuff, struts, coils etc. I tried to put by track bar in but it was about an inch off, somehow managed to put it in place by lifting the passenger side of the axle. Now the upper control arm is rubbing against the passenger side catalytic converter. Am I doing something wrong here? Is there a sequence to put everything back? Please let me know, thanks!

So my buddy thought he could drive his jeep tj like a rzr and ended up ripping a entire knuckle off on the driver side. He kept going till he was good amd properly stuck. Halfway off a 20' sloped hill. I told him he just cost himself a 1000 bucks. Luckily i had some spare knuckles from doing axle swaps. He had ome day to spare before work and couldnt stay to help recover it so i made him buy the snap on ball joint press and a bunjee tow rope. I would not of gotten him out with a regular strap. Beleive me i tried and we even had a second truck pulling. Anyways i fixed the ball joints but didnt put a new front axle shaft in at the time. We ended up getting it out. We just dropped a new dynatrak crate 44 in. Its super badass. Just Empty Every Pocket

I'm glad you did this one, I'm replacing all 8 control arms on my ZJ. The control arms arrived the other day, but I still need to order the front bushings. When it comes to the rental tools, I'm on the train of thought where if you rent them 3 times, you need to buy them. Have you ever replaced the ring and pinion in a Dana 30? When I replaced the gear oil in mine last year I noticed the glittery oil and the ring and pinion gears were real shiny.

its easier to remove the front upper bushings if you lift the frame up and put a jack under that than lift your axle, remove your wheels and then lower there axle to gain the room needed to use the press to remove the bushings. Its really easy to mess up the passenger side mount hole by using power tools and beating on it with a hammer besides its just easier

Yeah the upper control arm bushing at the axle on my xj sucks. 😆 Speaking of Detroit axle parts, I just did a rear brake job on the wife's so called jeep Patriot this weekend, not a real jeep. 😆 The rotor was correct and the back inner brake pad was great the outer not even close. What china man packed that box ughh. So I got MacGyver on it and made it work. Not sure about Detroit axle parts anymore. Is that ball joint press have that certain angle press cup that is for the xjs not sure if your jeep has that. Keep up the good work.
