Jeep Cherokee: EVAP System Tour; How it Works + Test it Without a Smoke Machine! [‘98-’01 XJ] P0455

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

1998-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ: Evaporative Emissions Control System explained - How it Works and Where the Leak is + Test it Without a Smoke Machine! [‘98-’01 XJ] P0455 Large EVAP Leak
… But that’s 81 characters too long for a title.
The Evaporative Emissions Control System is a vacuum actuated air filtration system connecting the fuel tank to a charcoal canister, to a purge valve, to the intake manifold. Along the way is a Leak Detection Pump, also run by engine vacuum, with its own air filter.
The purpose of an EVAP System is to reuse unburnt fuel vapors residing in the gas tank. This improves both your Mileage and Range, as less fuel is wasted from naturally evaporating.
The 1998-2001 Jeep Cherokee employs one such system, and was among the first vehicles to do so. As a result of its primitive and unrefined nature, it’s a very common cause of the Check Engine Light, often displaying P0455. There are a handful of reasons this error can happen, documented in this video.
An EVAP leak isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just means you’ll get worse fuel economy but no harm will usually come of it. However, many states require annual emissions inspections, and if your Check Engine Light is on during said inspection you’ll be unable to register the vehicle until the problem is fixed, so let’s track it down.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Worst thing that can possibly happen is me not knowing the answer.

That entire system confused the craps out of me, for years (2 XJ’s) but after a few replays of your epic video (bc I’m stupid), I tested the entire system, finally got it through emission's. It was the tank seal, and the vent to canister. Sending a case of Spotted Cow …

    This video was a matter of "Fine... I'll do it myself." There's no information out there because most XJ guys don't give half a damn about gas mileage, and think emissions systems are a communist plot to steal their wives I had searched for 2 years on XJ EVAP stuff but just couldn't find anything helpful. One day I was finally fed up with it and decided to research and learn everything there was to know about how the system works, apply that knowledge to the XJ, and then tell the world!

We installed silicone vacuum hoses good results and the next project is the original fuel pump and evap canister. I'll be sure to add rubber hose to the parts pile so we can get rid of the sketchy looking metal pipe. The Purge solenoid clicks so I assume it's functioning, I may go replace it since it's cheap. I bought a 2000 XJ & while my mpg isn't great running at stick height with 31'10.50" tires I was expecting a bit more as my 5.3 '05 Yukon gets better mileage onnthe hwy. I don't have a check engine light or any codes per my scan tool & just noticed today the two lines to the purge valve have been disconnected for a long time as evident from the think layer of dirt. Pulled up this video to see if that would cause a CEL & am really curious to see if my engine runs better & or mpg improves. Actually popped the hood as I am changing oil, brakes & was hoping to get cruis & AC working so was just looking for anything disconnected or cracked or off vacuum lines as well as anything else & noticed the evap lines. Anyways good video & also why it is a good idea to always have a good look around under the hood & vehicle when doing basic maintenance or a repair as you never know what may need replacement, has been "broken" or what you may find.

    Unfortunately, most of the EVAP stuff isn't made anymore, so you have two options: you can try a dealership, who might be able to get a certain few pieces, or you can rig up some custom stuff with random bits of emissions rated hose and some clamps. That's what I did, parts stores also sell random assorted fittings that might sometimes work, but otherwise you'll just have to piece together most of it. If you can't find "emissions rated hose", fuel rated hose will also work because it's basically the same thing

    The trouble with those EVAP Fittings is that they aren't made anymore, I had to use random "universal" ones when I replaced mine. Small fuel-rated hose will work, otherwise you'll either need to get them from a dealer (doubtful) or get creative with some custom parts unfortunately

  • @WAEMIDIV

    The hose I used was not a specific part, it was just 4 feet of 5/16 fuel rated hose from Autozone. Parts stores usually sell various hoses by foot increments. I used a 1/4 to 5/16 brass adapter to connect it to the fuel tank side, and it fit right on the charcoal canister side. There's nothing much to it, just rip out the metal line and put a rubber line in its place

  • @collin_bowie
    @collin_bowie9 ай бұрын

    Great info and very well presented. Not sure if you're still answering comments on this vid but I was wondering: assuming the LDP is not faulty and can hold pressure within itself, could you just clear the check engine light, block off the LDP like you did, then take the vehicle in for inspection after all of the internal monitors in the ECU have gone through their checks? Might need to find a more inconspicuous way to block the line but I'm wondering if that would be a temporary workaround to get a sticker. After moving from FL up to NH I don't think my evap leak is going to fly anymore lol

  • @WAEMIDIV

    @WAEMIDIV

    9 ай бұрын

    Yeah, I imagine that would work. Most state inspections don't much inspect the vehicle, they just scan the computer for error codes or use a Tailpipe sniffer. The only state I've heard of that actually does thoroughly look through a vehicle is California but I've never been to New Hampshire so they might take a look around. But that's the only thing to be concerned about

I just took off my connector hose from the evap cannister to the metal line (mine isn't rusted through...yet) because it was cracked & leaking but it looked to be one diameter at the metal tube side and a larger one at the cannister side. Any tips or suggestions on what could be wrong with this money pit? **Btw I have a new fuel pump**

    A long crankover can be caused by a handful of things, ranging from simple maintenance-able things like bad Spark plugs or a starter, but could also be clogged fuel injectors, low compression in 1 or more cylinders, or even a dying crankshaft/ camshaft position sensor. I doubt the EVAP code is related to the long crank, and if you can't find the leak you can do a smoke test or experiment like I did in the video

    what if the temps gets hot outside and the fuel tank is getting pressurized due to heat expansion ? can a bad evap purge valve cause the fuel tank to over pressurize ? i read mixed information about if the fuel cap is vented to atmosphere (but believe that it is not and all the venting should be into the evap canister) first i am going to pull the lines off and see if the are clogged. ..

  • @WAEMIDIV

    Heat doesn't have anything to do with it, gasoline just evaporates and vapor naturally takes up more space than liquid, so it pressurizes itself ambiently. The gas cap does have a vent on it that's designed to open at a certain threshold as an emergency release, but I don't know what that pressure requirement is A stuck purge valve can indeed cause overpressurization, as can a clog in a line. There are OBD codes for both of those conditions

    @@WAEMIDIV okay thank you so much for the reply and awesome videos!. (my xj is 1998btw) there is currently NO check engine light on. but i need to get this sorted out. i will try to swap out the purge valve with one from one of my other jeeps and see if that helps. next, i will pull the lines off and blow through them to see if they are clear. the tank is getting way over pressurized so much that it is expanding like a balloon until i open the gas cap. i installed an old gas cap that i had laying around but i am unsure if it is even good... if the purge valve swap doesn't help, and the lines aren't clogged, next i might get a new gas cap. i have another issue that i think is unrelated; The jeep doesn't keep it's fuel primed like it should (i have to cycle the key a few times before it will start) so for this i bought a new fuel check valve and still need to install it. would a bad fuel check valve cause the tank to over pressurize ? or could these problems be related in anyway ?

  • @WAEMIDIV

    @MrMrsregor Not all 98s have a full EVAP system, if yours doesn't have the leak detection pump then it won't know how to display errors for alot of the EVAP stuff, which doesn't mean it can't fail, it just has no way of knowing if it does. The fuel priming is unrelated, you will need a fuel pressure regulator, which might be this "check valve" you got (maybe the same part with different names)

    P1494 and P0441 in tandem with each other confirms a failed Leak Detection Pump. The case might be cracked which would explain the smell of gas near it The LDP air filter may also be clogged, so check that while you're there, but the LDP needs to be replaced

    @patriot72 P0441 means "incorrect purge flow" so either the filter is clogged, or there's a leak in the LDP itself. The fact that you also have P1494 (Internal electrical failure of LDP) and can smell gas, tells me the LDP is 100% failed, I'm just saying to check the EVAP filter and make sure that isn't clogged as well. Yanno blow it out with compressed air or something. They do actually still sell those little filters on rockauto too, if you want to replace it

    @patriot72 Danger, no not really, unless you have a common issue of people lighting cigarettes in the back left corner of your engine bay specifically Gas mileage yes, because think - you are leaking perfectly usable fuel vapors into the atmosphere, instead of diverting them into the engine where they can be used. So fixing this issue will definitely increase your MPG, but by how much just depends on how badly it's been leaking. It may be so minimal of an increase you don't notice, or you could gain like +2 MPG

    The 2000 models had an option between a 50 state emissions package, or a 49 state package. The 50th state of course being California, all 2000 model year XJs sold in California had to have this EVAP system along with the 2 manifold catalysts. However, 2000 XJs sold in any of the other 49 states came standard without it - it was optional. People refer to these two emissions systems as "California Emissions" (shown in the video) and "Federal Emissions" (what you have). When I made this video, I didn't really understand that. I thought it was commonplace on the 1998+ Cherokees for whatever reason. In 2001, it became standard, so *some* 2000s have it, and *all* 2001s have it.

    @@als.688 I'm gonna go ahead and say no, the problem is not with the charcoal canister/ evap system. Sure it may be contributing, and will cause a loss of MPG, but I think the bad idle is much more likely caused by something like a clogged fuel injector, a sensor on the throttle body, or potentially something internal like bad lifters. Might even be an O2 sensor. I assume the CEL is on, in which case I would start there and scan the computer to see what error codes it displays. The evap system is not an essential thing on the XJ, and you could even unplug the whole thing from the intake manifold and see if that makes a difference - just plug the hole and start it
