Alec Baldwin's Trump looked more the part. But James Austin Johnson's Trump makes up for it with his voice and mannerisms. Plus, it reminds me of Darrell Hammond's take on him.

Jesus Christ he’s better than Alec. This was the most spot on imitation impression of trump I’ve ever heard. His speech patterns down to his mannerism and vocal dialect like. Alec does a kind of character of him exaggerated even more than trump already does but he nailed it. He got it exactly 100% if I didn’t know this was SNL I would have thought someone made a funny video of trump clips and made him say all this shit lmao. It’s so perfect. 100%

I refuse to believe otherwise. He's just too on point. My wife heard me listening to this and she said, "Trump went on SNL?' True story.

Not sure I've seen a new SNL cast member be as impactful as quickly as James Austin Johnson. He's been the standout role in multiple cold opens already (including his first episode ever). You can't compare his Trump with Baldwin's, because Baldwin was doing more of a caricature while this is a much more realistic impression of Trump. But his Trump really is amazing... the voice, the mannerisms, the cadence, etc. He also riffs so much doing the Trump run-on sentences that I can't imagine it's all 100% scripted/on cue cards. There has to be some amount of improv in there.

You can't compare his Trump to Baldwin's cuz he blows Baldwin out of the water. Baldwin always had that stupid look on his face that really didn't look anything like Trump. Plus, Baldwin hates Trump, it came across in his impression, and it's just not as funny, Ask Chevy Chase, Dana Carvey, Norm Macdonald, Darryl Hammond, etc.. But the whole show suffers cuz they go for applause over laughter. Weekend Update sucks. It's just the same "Republicans are racist, evil, idiotic, nazi's" joke over and over and over. But James Johnson does a great Trump. That much is true.

Carvey's Bush and Chase's Ford sounded nothing like them, and Hammond's president turned every Clinton mannerism up to 11 and even invented a couple. In Darryl Hammond's book, he explains why broad caricatures work better on SNL than realistic impressions. This new Trump only works because the nonsense that comes out of Trump's mouth every time he talks is comedy gold as a starting point. A realistic portrayal of his sons, for example, wouldn't be funny because they spout preprepared talking points, where their father does more of a stream of consciousness collage of things he's said a hundred times. It's very unusual to see realistic impersonations on SNL.

Very much so! I also really like the new Trump actor and his style! When the screen splits and the words come up, I know there will be amusement to be had. I also love that it's already evolving. 😆 Also, to circle back to the original point, Cecily was (as always) FANTASTIC in her delivery. She does very well with MANY forms of crazy. 🤪👸
