Jean Vanier - "Seeing God in Others"

Jean Vanier, the son of a former Governor General of Canada, was teaching philosophy at the University of Toronto when he visited the chaplain of a small residence for handicapped people. That visit was a turning point in Jean Vanier's life and it became clear to him that God was calling him to something new. Soon after, in a small town outside of Paris, he invited two handicapped men from a nearby institution to come live with him. In time, others joined them, until the community grew to over 400 people. Their success in ministering to the handicapped in a radically new way-a way inspired by Jesus-gradually spread until today, more than 130 L'Arche communities exist around the world.

I came across this video doing research for a school project- and thank goodness i did! Jean Vanier has changed my opinions on how those with disabilities should be treated. He is such an inspirational person and we should all look up to him. May God be forever with you

Unlike so many of the shallow, I will not abandon my huge admiration for Jean Vanier because he may have had human weaknesses, as we all do. Nor will my admiration be unreasonably diverted or diminished by the anxious cries and bleats of the many who desperately try to demonstrate their own superior moral rectitude and so glibly throw overboard the reputation of a man who was greater than they will ever be.

I haven't thought of Vanier for a number of years. This is video is a good jolt. Although I may not share his religious views, I am compelled by his connection to others and his sheer pleasure in relationships with people.

He was and is a good man, I testify and he built communities in my country and many other countries. And the man, Mr Posner, who accused Jean and set these accusations up is now giving retreats charging a lot of money from people in... the very same community and in the very same seat that Jean Vanier built. Remember there has never been any legal case open against Jean Vanier by anybody. No national institution whatsoever has done it. The accusers have never shown their identities. The only thing that happened was that LÁrche international accused one of its members, that is Jean, of something. This is against the law. Say, a school director cannot accuse the teacher of the said school of anything. This can be done only by a third party, for instance, by a representative of a state body or by any citizen. With Jean Vanier, there has never been ANY third party accusations, any legal official investigations. It was a private firm that received money from LÁrche International for the 'investigation'. In just the same way I can pay a private detective who for my money will 'prove' that your post is illegal, don't you understand? The new director of LÁrche International just took over the reins of power after Jean death, cut off financing of communities in underdeveloped countries and now enjoys financing from the state budget. Mr Posner grew in LÁrche under the leadership of Jean Vanier, his, well, teacher! Don't you understand it? He announced that there are some alledged women who somehow suffered but there has been no legal case; only journalists who were glad to make news out of a situation in which Jean couldn't even hire a lawer to protect himself. Don't you understand that they in LÁrche international started telling their members including handicap people how bad Jean was as if they had a full and certified court decision concerning Jean Vanier. They don't!
