She was best known to British television viewers as Hilda Ogden in the soap opera Coronation Street, a role she played from 1964 until 1987, and also as Auntie Wainwright in the long-running sitcom Last of the Summer Wine from 1988 to 2010. Hilda Ogden was the best TV character of all time. Jean Alexander played her with a sense of warmth and admiration that is rarely seen these days.
That's when coronation Street was great, thanks for all the laughs Jean Rest in peace.
Nobody could play Hilda like Jean Alexander and her singing when she was cleaning was brill so funny. "God bless you"
I metJean in The Coronation pub on King st in Southport years ago . Very quietly spoken and a very friendly . A marvellous actress as her Hilda Ogden is exactly the opposite of her real self . A very nice lady and a great actress .
God Bless You Jean Alexander and May You Rest in Peace, thanks for Hilda and Auntie Wainwright, May Everyone Today Stay Safe, XX
Jean Alexander was a superb actress. The most iconic character ever to grace British screens. An absolute legend. No other Corrie character has even come close x
Jean Alexander is still very much missed thank you for the wonderful memories RIP xx
Thank you for this upload, it's very moving - I didn't realise the great Jean Alexander was 90 when she left us, a great age for a great lady. She gave the public many years of first rate entertainment with her superb performances in Coronation Street. And when she left the show she had another career in big shows like 'Last of the Summer Wine' and 'Heartbeat' (in which she was reunited with her Corrie lodger Eddie Yates, aka actor Geoffrey Hughes). In my view Jean Alexander will always be the world's top soap actor, of either gender. She did comedy and she did tragedy - there was nothing she couldn't do. That is a truly incredible talent. Thank you Jean and as your own, legendary creation would say: "Ta ra chuck!" X

We don't have a Hilda Ogden type anywhere on the telly these days. Characters have stopped being true to how people are and are now stereotypes of what advertising agencies think people in London want to see on their screens. People don't really connect with them them way they once did. And Jean was a mighty actress. You could feel in performances the life her characters had seen and why they acted the way they did. Hilda had no self pity, but a determination to work herself out of the role life had dealt her and into her own version of the good life. RIP.
Loved her . My entire childhood. My mum died last year and Corrie was a staple in our house . Although I’m in the US south London is always home.
RIP Jean/Hilda. For me I will always remember Jean as Hilda. Superbly acted character, along with Stan. Stan & Hilda the best soap couple by far. God knows what she would think of Coronation Street now, with the wooden and unconvincing actors.
my all time fave jean was legend very sadly missed.
A lovely lovely woman god bless x
Lovely montage of our Hilda. Irreplaceable. Thanks for sharing.
Loved her character no snobbery just a down to earth person no fake crap.
Hilda Ogden a proper soap character,
Still watching 2022 Hilda Stan Eddie the Greatest 👍🇬🇧
Jean Alexander play Hilda great in those days what a amazing woman she is. RIP.
Shes so amazing. Sad shes gone😳
Just gotta love her ♥️
You can truly say: everyone loved this woman.
Stan and Hilda are the best soap characters ever not just from coronation street but any soap anywhere.
Loved her so much
I am and always a fan of Coronation Street
Wish me well as you wave me goodbye here l go cheerio lm on my way RIP jean alexander
I considered her as Britains grandmother probably cause she reminded me of my own granny.
That isa good age for her had a good long life be at peace lady
She had a good long life rip lady
Rest in Lo💓e Jean..Our Hilda⚘️
90 is good 👍✝
Hilda never stole, cheated or lied. And unlike most of the street they owned their own home. It says much about the class system that these qualities were not much valued by her peers.
Over the course of 23 years, she gradually turned Hilda Ogden from a cheap, nosy, unlikeable character into a magnificent, admirable GEM of a human being. That's called talent. My favourite scene was when, following Stan's death, she went through a box of his belongings & broke down - very moving.
It was a ggod age but sad rip lady
She was 👍 great
There was nothing downtrodden about Mrs Ogden! R.I.P Jean Alexander!
Thought she a beautiful gifted lady.
Hilda should've been given her own show. I suppose "spin-offs" weren't a thing back then though.
she was great playing Hilda and Hilda had a wastrel of Son
Rip.now up in heaven have a drink on them
diva ever
"Never able to get above the lowest rung of the social ladder" Not everybody is obssessed with 'striving to the top' posh lad, Hilda knew who she was, she was poor but not common, THAT was her only aspiration, 'class' isn't only the preserve of the wealthy
lol 😂 How I remember how she was nothing but a nosy gossiping woman and her layabouts husband Sam in Coronation Streets 💖🙌🏼

Not forgetting her loafing lodger Eddie Yates played by the brilliant Geoffrey Hughes.
I always thought that was her real name, strange my great grandmother was called Jeannie Alexander. Coronation St, another show ruined
Jean Alexander hated the way Coronation Street was going and now become. That's why she amd the likes of Thelma Barlow would never go back. It's lost the heart of the show, it's everyday comedy and pathos of normal life of people.
What about Jean Fergusson she died recently to
she died 3 days after her 90th birthday thats strange

Why strange, it can happen anytime, it could have happened on the day. You can never tell with mortality. But as Jean had a stroke prior not long ago she was a weak woman and her age kind of went against her because of the stroke.

Why is it strange? Football manager Joe Mercer died on his birthday in 1990. It will happen on any day. Death doesn't discriminate
