I had a Lectron for a while on my 300xc and had a lot of problems and constantly adjusting the meter rod. It kept bogging on downhill bumps and jumps. I went back to my Keihn and put a STIC metering block and now it’s the cleanest power I’ve ever had on a 2 stroke. I highly recommend the STIC meter block from Tokyo Offroad

Very good review. I'm leaning towards Lectron. When I lived in HA. The Big Island, I carried another carb setup for high alt. just under 14000'. It was faster and easier just to swap carbs at around 9000'. Ride safe my 2 wheel friends.

@Dirt N Iron I use my rainjacket from the Austrian Army. It is just one layer but its really big an protects fine from the wind. And its big enough to wear the Protectors underneath. Nice video big effort, keep it up!! Greatings from Austria, Land of KTM ;)

JD jetting is the best mod I have ever done on my YZ 250, once I installed and rode bike I couldn’t believe I didn’t do it earlier, thought bike ran right before but after I did the jetting it was night and day.

@ Michael pullins, not sure for the kx but I have the kit installed on my 05 yz 250 and it came with a different pilot, needle and an array of mains, I believe the magic is in the needle where the taper is not noticeable and in the stock khein needle you can see where the needle tapers. On my brothers 250f we also installed a jd jetting kit and we did not have to touch the pilot jet and it still made the bike run much, much better.

My bike like to bog while riding rough terrain and going uphills and sputters at the powerband and sometimes doesn't hit. Is my bike running too rich?? I've had the same jetting for two years and it acts differently now. I have cleaned powervalve and carb and float height is right

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'm always impressed with how comprehensive your video collection is. I'm considering a CRF150R for my son's next bike, but it seems like they are hard and frustrating to start and idle when cold. It seems like that could be corrected with proper jetting. I found out about JD Jet Kits, which is what brought me here. Why they don't come properly jetted from the factory is beyond me. Deciding between a Lectron and a JD kit is hard. I like the way you said the Lectron is kinda like fuel injection, where it just adjusts itself, and you don't have tool around with it and get gas everywhere to make changes. But I like how much money you can save with JD. I live in Florida, so elevation is a non issue, so I'd probably go with JD, and hope I don't have to tinker too much. Very educational video, which I appreciate very much.

They are sold with rich jetting for carbed bikes because the air quality is different all around the world, and even every hour in some places sometimes. So they have to be sold on the rich side to avoid engine failures for their customers all over the world.

I bought a second hand Lectron from the wreckers for a good price to put on my older KTM380 that wasnt running too well..Gave it a good clean out..no mods and straight on..The transformation was unbelievable and even up to 6000 feet elevation with 35 F temps it ran exactly the same..wish I did this before I spent all the effort time and parts trying to jet the stock carb to give acceptable performance..For this old bike Lectron has given it a new lease of life.

Wondering if you experienced bogging at 1/2 throttle to wide open by chance? I have a 2000 380 mxc and wondering if I'm too rich. Should I go smaller on the main jet?

For winter riding I've been wearing -100 sorel boots and snowmobile gear. I live in northern Ontario Canada and rode all winter with my wife at our ice fishing shack where we go ice fishing all winter. For fall riding I wear a joe rocket ballistic insulated and armoured jacket with the rest of my normal gear. My yz250 always works perfectly with the jetting that's included with the parts kit that comes with purchase of a new yz250, I run the 180 main in winter and 178 main in summer as per the manual suggested, works perfectly and I'm still on the original spark plug at 157 hours with original piston. I use Yamalube r oil mixed at 32/1 with shell gold pump gas with a lil splash of lucus octane boost. My wife rides a xr100 so my bike is lugging all alot of the ride.

I put the JD jet kit on my 2006 yz 250 I built. Couldn’t be happier with it. It rips. I know what it’s gunna do where I ride. I saved money and it’s easy if I go to the mountains to set up for that.

Great review Rado. I do not have any experience with the Lectron but the JD kits have always worked well for me, but the older I get the smoother transition/power curve I want on the throttle, I don't crave that hard hit as much anymore that the JD kit provides IMO. If you ever get the opportunity to try the SC2 Smart Carb I would love to see that review. Keep up the great work, stay healthy my friend

Jd jet kit for me. I’ve put 2 in and both were spot on for my elevation going by there chart. Just adjusted the af. My sons kx112 I had resorted to going to 4o to 1 just so he wasn’t fouling plugs everyday. Jd I drained it put 32 to 1 in put it in and it was perfect, just needed a half turn on af screw. But I’m never in big elevation changes.

I replaced the jet block gasket on my 2018 KTM 300 XC-W Mikuni carburetor with one from JD jetting. Also put the JD blue needle setup in the Mikuni. I like the Mikuni better than my Keihin with a JD Kit. The Keihin lives in a box now. All the Mook needs is a new gasket where the jet block attaches to the carb body. My original one was crimped from the manufacturer.

Joel Cowdrey III Man I had the jet block gasket problem on my yz125 for a year and couldn’t figure out why it didn’t run right! Oem doesn’t sell it and I finally came across the jd gasket. It runs great again now 👍

Keihin PWK 38S is a very good carb when jetted correctly. I use myself Suzuki RM 250 NECJ needle in my Husky 250. Much better throttle response than with the original needles.

I have a YZ125 and I am going to install the Boyesen Rad Valve but I can't decide on stock carb or Lectron. There is way too much conflicting information out there! Can you power wheelie without the clutch?

The mikuni is a great carb, in stock trim it has a couple issues that are a real issue, but most are super easy fixes. The JD jet block gasket and jet kit make a huge difference for under $100.

Yeah I’ve had zero issues with mine, put the JD kit in with the gasket and when I was changing it I could see the stock jet block gasket was about to fail so that’s a worth while investment. Jetting kit smoothed out the throttle everywhere

Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏽 what kind of handle bars do you have on this bike? Your controls are setup really clean 👍🏽👍🏽

On thing you can do that should be fine for your riding, (not super hard on the engine like MX), to change your jetting very quickly for a colder day, is use less oil in your gas for that day. If you change the oil/gas mixture, you are changing the amount of fuel that is going thought the jets also. I would stay between 32:1 to 50:1 with a very good oil for your riding, and I can roughly say that will be good for a 20 or 40 degree change in air temps. IMO, setting your jetting to 32:1 oil/gas mix on a cold day for a nice crisp plug, would be a good place to set anchor. I would not run thinner than 50:1 in any 2-stroke engine. The EPA may say it is OK, and force oil manufactures to sell it that way,--but no engine builder or manufacture would.

Interesting video. JD must put a lot of time in on jetting. I was expecting the Lectron to walk away with the comparison. Years ago I switched a CR480 keihin onto my YZ 465 to replace the mikuni. Was surprised how much more crisp the keihin was for me.

Trying JD jetting on 2001 KTM 125 SX, had to go one size bigger than recommended for pilot jet to get good throttle response. Bike starts easy, idles good, really nice response to throttle to get the bike moving. However, sometimes the bike accelerates good past half throttle and sometimes the bike lacks power or cuts out just past half throttle. I tried going to leaner positions on the needle clip, but no change in acceleration when accelerating past half throttle. I am thinking of trying a bigger main jet and going back to the recommended blue needle clip position. All this is on a fresh rebuild of the engine. Does my condition sound like I am too lean on the main jet and needle?

Wow I'm impressed. I have spent 3.5 years restoring a cr250. The used mikuni carb I put on it to hard to jet. I just ordered a Keihin from California that comes with JD JET KIT. hoping for better. Results

I am new to the whole carburetor world. I recently swapped out my Keihn for a cheaper one. I am looking at rebuilding the Keihn and so far I have heard nothing but good things about JD jetting. I would like to invest in a Lectron or SmartCarb but until then I want to learn as much as I can about carbs.

Hello! Nice review. The chart probably works best for stock engine. What if the bike have fmf exhaust and Vforce? Did you had to add fuel somewhere?

yes, I believe I did paly with the needle a bit and increase the main jet one size

I have always had very good luck JD jetting, but discovered that you have to deviate from the chart with the needle choice and clip position slightly.

if you have the cash its a no brainer lectron carb! after simple initial set up a turn of the screw with your fingers and your corrected for the altitude at idle and on! if not i think a little labor is much better! lectron carbs are kinda irritating to start cold but once it warms up the fun is on! :)

Great review and very useful information. I have a Question if this has been asked do excuse me. The New Lectron with the Yellow Sticker, with what metering rod does that come from lectron and also the measurement? I have the older lectron with the Red sticker on my 17 300 xcw here in South Africa and currently run the 4-2m Metering (set at 3.25 turn in) rod at sea level we mostly ride anywhere from 750 feet up to 3500 feet. I find this rod to be rich. looking forward to your response.

My 98 kx250 runs really good snappy runs at 165 to 175 degrees im running 32to1 and I've only ran it for 15 minutes at a time and I'm not seeing hardly any smoke im afraid its lean i have jd kit but haven't tried it yet does it sound like I'm running lean

I've used JD jetting kits on 2 bikes and they both made more butt dyno power but the recommended jetting was way to rich on the 2 stroke and on the 4 stroke it was to rich on the bottom end. Still would recommend getting one but you might still need to learn to jet

For my 21 yz the jd kit is stock jets with a custom needle but does wake up the bike

i just bought 1 gallon of Klotz r50 and I mix it with 91 pump gas

My 18' TE250 runs ok on stock, yet so much oil is always coming out my pipe, being in Australia we don't have much difference in elevation, can get cold in summer, would JD be the go to help with the oil? Just don't think lectron would be worth as we just don't have the elevation difference other countries get?

JD jetting will be a very good upgrade, I think they also have a kit ti fix some of the mikuni little problems.

My lectron just works everywhere without me having to mess with it. I rode this morning and it was cold (only 28)when we started. Me and my buddy both on 17,18 KTM 250's. My buddy has his stock carb perfectly tuned but he had to mess around with the air screw to get his bike working decently and never really got it working as good as it could with the cold. Not that big of a deal but I've ridden from 4000'-13000' and 10-100 degrees and have never had to touch my lectron. I could probably get a tiny bit more power or punch out of other carbs but I like to ride. Not tune.

I still have no issues what so ever running 3 different size Keihin PJs on my bikes. People make jetting out to be a horror show, just do some reading and talking with people who know what there talking about and you should be all set. With that said im still very interested in buying a lectron for my new bike build.. Im kind of leaning towards putting a 92-01 cr250 motor in the gen3 frame. Im very comfortable with those motors and like them more then the RCs. Time will tell. Sorry for the rambling this being locked inside is killingg me.. Off to dismantle a cr125 motor now lol

The 2002-2004 RC valve engines are just a little lack in power just nkt as good for some reason. But the year your talking about is a good engine

I’ve always used JD Jetting and never had any issues

Hello from Greece. I have one question. In my yamaha dt with 170 cc athena big bore kit. Zeeltronic cdi , exhaust especially for 170 kylinder , v force 4 reed, its worth it to buy 34mm lectron ?? Now i have one oko carburettor 38mm but in the middle of rpm i have little less power and in low and hi everything it's ok. What you think? Thanks . Keep good job👍👍

@@dirtniron i play with jettings ooh mayde 4 weeks every day. I buy from ebay others i buy from Greece after. I try a lot of stuff with filter with out filter i distraction from indian vespa 150 cc carburettor collar . A different collar to go in original filter box to work the carburettor with original filter. Nothing again. With full middle throttle everything was good in full throttle the bike dound like one person in the sea try to not drown . And i think the problem is the carburettor or the reeds .i dont have other explained. Anyway thanks for your answer . I thinking its time for lectron no 38mm but 34mm .i hope they work ☺️

You should loop your overflow tube up and around the carb and you will not dump fuel out and get better fuel mileage, I have a lectron on one of my 01 yz125's and just got one for my 13 Yz 250, I was swapping carbs all last year testing lol, I changed the rod in the lectron for the 125 to try it on the 250 before the got one for that bike

@@christophgallo2347 the lectron carb is great , I had to tune it a bit after the first couple of rides, it was lean and had bad low end power and I couldn't tell until later on because I put the new lectron on a fresh motor rebuild and had to do heat cycles (low rpm/load) but after the heat cycles and tuning the rod it was good from top to bottom, great over Rev and bottom end power, better fuel mileage. the bike still ran when it was quite lean and didn't hurt the motor but i ran 16 to 1 for break in, ( took the top end off to inspect it after I found how lean it was)

Does the JD kit give you a variety of jets so you can fine tune it, or just a set to replace the stock jets? If it is just a single set of jets,---it can't be perfect all the time for your bike and area. But if you like the performance better than the Lectorn,---it's a winner just getting started.

haha, I try to pull the clutch in when on heavy engine brake, but little bit of engine breaking is fine.. cant really do it all the time. How do you ride ?

@@dirtniron have to use the clutch all the time because I live in fear that my top end loses compression and as a 16year old Finnish boy I have no job so even150€ for a new 70cc top end rebuild kit is a shit ton of money that's why i at least try to avoid engine braking:DD

@@gulag_dt I'm included! it's just a lever to take off with and the brakes to get off the bike and with the rest does not need the clutch or brakes while racing! LOL I'm into enduro and only use the clutch to climb things and pop the front end up to climb over things! I can not do a wheely to save my life it freeks me out! I can do it on a bicycle all day long!

His year of bike doesn't use different springs you adjust tension on the spring by screwing the adjuster in or out.

Apparently they state they fixed the crispness and snappiness people complained about on the H-series with their new Billetron series.

Yeah man, I'm at sea level in Texas.. but I think I'm either running a 185 main or a 180 main now that it's a little warmer and more humidity. And I think it's a 48 pilot.. and I'm also running 100 octane low lead aviation gas, which was recommended to me by JD jetting.. and I will never switch back to pump now.

try to drop needle one notch down during warm weather. Sounds like the bike is running rich in warm weather.

yes, I stopped using it last couple months.. doesnt fit well under the jacket..

When properly set up the Lectron is better. Normally you get better fuel mileage and power along with rideability. You need to take the time to set it up correctly. However, properly jetting a stock carb is always the first and least expensive step.

don't get a lectron, I did and it required just as much tweaking as a stock carb. Stock carb runs so much better, jsut elarn howt o jet it properly

SmartCarb 2 is better than all of them. Been there done that.

Yeah I’m sick of my lectron just feel like I lost a lot of bottom end always searching for a better power delivery off my 2019 ktm 300xc it’s smooth but not exciting, my friend just bought. 2013 ktm 250 xc runs a carb with decent jetting and it’s got more bottom then my bike...

Dirt N Iron just bought one put it in and it’s a whole new bike runs super clean and crisp with the jetting and my bottom end amazing now the bike just seems more alive than with the lectron.

Yeah I just bought a keihin with a jd kit and it’s coming in the mail I’m over this lectron haha I want my bike to feel like a two stroke again I constantly tinker with the lectron to get more snap off the bottom but just doesn’t have it

You should compare the lectron vs the PWK with the STIC metering block

How about you just watch them and support Rado during the quaranitine.

It seems like you will promote whoever gives you free stuff. Not sure if you have ridden an FI 2 stroke but it's not like a Lectron at all, Smartcarb is the only one that comes close to FI performance.

Keith, if you or someone you know has a SmartCarb that's lean on top, have them reach out to TE for advice. Typically top end leanness with an SC is related either to vent scoop obstruction in the airboot or it may need a richer metering rod, but it's not an inherent issue with them. They've been used to set PPIHC records and are being tested and adopted by factory race teams.

@Keith Peterson, I’d encourage you to do some more research about the history of these products, their operating principles, and more recent customer and racer feedback. You mention APT, but that is a defunct company. The SmartCarb has been owned and sold by Technology Elevated for 5 years now. Full disclosure, I work there. The first flat slide carburetor using a metering rod was the Posa-fuel and it came out in 1967. The inventor, William Edmonston went on to develop the Lake Injector, the Lectron, the Ei Blue Magnum, the Quik Silvers I and II, and eventually the SmartCarb before his passing. To say that the flat slide, metering rod style carburetor concept and the SmartCarb is undeveloped is incorrect. SmartCarbs are sold in more than 50 countries and the claims made including 10% or more power, 30% greater fuel economy, reduced emissions, air density compensation, external adjustability, etc are the reality for our customers and sponsored racers, not just bluster from us. Third party dyno testing, including from JD Jetting himself, show that SmartCarbs do make power. The charts are on his website. Not exactly unbiased testing but the smaller 36mm SmartCarb held its own against larger 38mm Keihins, Mikunis, and Lectrons on top. They’ve been tested, again 3rd party, on drones up to 22k feet elevation with no changes in A/F ratios. Our racers continuously tout the ability to skip fuel-ups during races. And the product has been twice EPA certified for on-road use and produced the lowest evaporative emissions ever tested with a carburetor. It’s not snake oil. The 2 liter bottle and gas can analogies as well as your understanding of carburetor venting are also incorrect. Unlike the 2 liter bottle or non vented gas can, all carbs are vented. Vacuum or negative pressure do not “suck” fuel into the engine by way of jets or metering rods. Rather, higher atmospheric pressure falls/pushes into lower pressure spaces, which drives fuel flow. That’s true for any carburetor whether it be through vent hoses used by the Lectron and conventional carbs or through the SmartCarb’s vent scoop. The SmartCarb simply uses this phenomenon in a better way by using manifold absolute pressure to vent the bowl instead of just atmospheric pressure. By using both atmospheric pressure AND dynamic air flow inside of the airboot, the SmartCarb allows for fuel driving forces that are both proportional to the air density but also its velocity. That’s how it compensates for extreme air density changes and also why it, unlike the Lectron, does not require a power jet for sufficient top end fueling. All that to say that yes, vent scoop blockage in the airboot can hinder top end fueling in the SmartCarb. It’s imperative that the scoop be able to “breathe” and a trim of the in-molded rubber ridge in the top inside of some airboots is required. The KTMs are prone to having that rubber ridge and so in this case we would advise checking for and correcting for any vent scoop obstruction. The short vague explanation of metering rod vs jet fuel atomization capabilities is also incorrect, mostly. You’re right in that the more finely atomized the fuel can be entering the engine, the more completely it can burn. The result is more complete and efficient combustion, and at proper A/F ratios, more power. To say though that jets provide finer fuel atomization compared to a metering rod is not correct. The opposite is true which is why you find many instances of metering rod carb customers talking up the improved fuel economy. That the metering rod more finely atomizes the fuel is precisely why these carbs, and in particular the SmartCarb, make more power using less fuel. The Lectron’s deficiencies in terms of power delivery are more related to its venturi shape and poorly atomized top end fueling through the power jet than it is about the metering rod atomization. To make power, you need to burn fuel more completely… period.

@Keith Peterson, speaking of snakes and snake oil, aren't you the guy at KPRacing that was partnered up with Boswell (aka InventorX-con) who created the STIC metering block? If so your baseless claims and understanding of the SmartCarb make a whole lot more sense 🤔

Kehin > than Mikiuni > Stic > than Lectron > than Smartcarb ! If you want looks of a supermodel and good performance Lectron, it does what it says and that floatbowl SAF!!! Performance because if you are me I don’t look at my carb when I’m riding you guys maybe super flexible and ride and look at your carb at the same time, if your bike has a Keihin PWK and you ditch you don’t know your bike well and they’re are very good options for that carb at nearly half the price of a Lectron or Smartcarb that will do all and more! Do your research! If your bike comes with a Mikuni carb esp a 17-19 KTM or Husky then the cost to performance ratio is a different proposal and the 3 main options imo become a personal decision on what you believe is best for you. Overall price? Support by supplier? Performance? Reliability? Buying a Kehin with a Stic MR is similar cost to buying a Lectron or a Smartcarb only you can make a decision at that point. If yr bike has a Kehin PWK imo/e it’s a no brainer! but as in these unprecedented times leading people to water is one thing getting them to drink it is a whole other problem, common sense or fat wallet you decide..a

My 18' TE250 runs ok on stock, yet so much oil is always coming out my pipe, being in Australia we don't have much difference in elevation, can get cold in summer, would JD be the go to help with the oil? Just don't think lectron would be worth as we just don't have the elevation difference other countries get?
