The Johnson County Rangers are an official posse of the National Congress of Old West Shootists (NCOWS).
We hold monthly shooting matches on a private range near Boston, Kentucky.
We strive to use guns, ammunition, clothing and accessories that are authentic to the old west period between 1866-1899 while some concessions are made in the interest of safety and availability.
This video shows nineteen members and one guest shoot through one of the five stages that we shot on August 18, 2018.
You will notice a variety of shooting styles. Some shoot one pistol and one rifle. Others shoot two pistols and one rifle and some shoot two pistols, one rifle and a shotgun.
Some shoot cartridge ammunition with smokeless powder while others shoot cartridge or cap and ball pistols with black powder.
Some prefer to shoot "duelist" style which means they grip their pistol with one hand while others shoot "shootist" style and use a two-handed grip on their pistols.
On this particular stage, the pistol and shotgun targets are set at 10 yards and the rifle targets are at 40 yards distance.
The targets must be shot in a particular order.
This is a timed event. The timer starts at the buzzer and ends with the last shot. Penalty time is added for missed targets. The lowest total time in each class of shooting wins.
