We picked up a rebuilt Pro Street Flyer Transmission from The Wright Gearbox to install in our 1971 Euro Look Super Beetle. Follow along as we install it in our restored chassis with urethane transmission mounts and a rear transmission support kit. Then we’ll install the shift rod in the chassis and connect it to the transmission with a Heavy Duty Urethane Shift Coupler.

Whenever possible we reuse the original parts and hardware. All original hardware was cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner with degreaser then scrubbed and rinsed. All metal hardware was then soaked in vinegar and scrubbed with a wire brush to eliminate any rust, rinsed and then soaked in oil to protect the metal. Large parts were cleaned with degreaser, soaked in vinegar and then when appropriate, painted to protect the finish. This is why we say save your hardware, there is no sense in replacing hardware, especially original hardware if it can be restored and reused!

Nice ! The pan/chassis looks great. Eventually I have to get the strap for my transmission and maybe a sway bar too.

My beetle has a swing axle, and if I never have to remove and reinstall it, it will be too soon. Next aircooled will definitely have the later irs transmission

did you run into any flywheel clearance issues with the provided hardware in this configuration? The long bolts with washer and lock nut are rubbing on the flywheel (12v, 70 transmission)

When removing and putting it back together it would be so nice for you to say what wrench was used as I need to remove two transmission but will have to go size the size of bolts . on a 1972

Can this type of front mount be installed with the enging and gearbox in the car?

There may be someone out there that has been able to change out a front transmission mount with the engine and transmission still in the car, I haven't met them. To replace any of the stock trans mounts, the engine has to be removed.

The replacement chassis i got has 2bolts on each side of the trans bracket instead of 1 big bolt. Will my original transmission still bolt up ?

The transmission bolts to the mounts, as long as you use the correct mounts, you're good.

Did your chassis come off a ‘73 or later beetle? A ‘73 I was parting out had two bolts, but my ‘72 has one big bolt

We usually use the www.jbugs.com/product/DH-LATEBUG.html for a cup holder. We don't offer anything specifically for cigarettes.

Urethane transmission mounts suck , I have gone through three sets . They dont hold up so I ended up using sold mounts .

Perhaps for racing, we've used the urethane mounts for decades without any issues.

where do you run the ground strap using these EMPI mounts?

  • @Sam_Mebane

If you are going to run a separate ground strap, run it off the nose cone like VW did.

@@Sam_Mebane thanks Sam- is the default VW position not from the nosecone to the outer bolt on the mount? would seem the recessed hole in the empi mount makes that non viable? huge thanks for these videos, and all the knowledge you share - it’s very much appreciated!
