Do you guys have any sway with the manufacturers of these panels? I'd really like to see the internal panel made from some sort of vinyl that won't warp if they get wet. If a window seal gets bad and you have a heavy rain it destroys the masonite. It shouldn't cost any more with the price of wood based products now.

We don't which is why we installed a plastic water barrier behind our panels (starting at about 2:35), just like VW did. In fact, most all auto manufacturers still put a water barrier in behind door panels to this today.

What mil sheeting was used as a water barrier?

No idea, it was just plastic sheeting that we had at hand. 6 mil is usually the minimum recommended thickness for a vapor barrier.

What's the point of the spring behind the window crank? My 74 doesn't have one and it seems to work fine, yet I see them advertised when I look to buy new cranks.

We really wish we knew...VW put it there, so do we, but to this day we still haven't found a good reason for them!

Awww, you're going to sell the car when you're done? I kinda thought you'd take it to shows or something to advertise your company

Sorry Borge, you were (not where) misinformed by someone. 1971 and 1972 Super Beetles have a "flat" windshield (which is actually slightly curved) just like the Standard Beetle. The 1973 Super Beetle was the first Super Beetle to come with the larger very curved windshield and a very different dashboard than the Standard Beetle. All Super Beetles have McPherson Strut front suspension which is the major difference between the Super and Standard. "The more you know!"
