Jazz Piano For Beginners: Getting Started (Lesson 1)
Course playlist: • Jazz Piano for Complet...
In this Jazz Piano online course I will bring you from the level of a complete jazz beginner up to the level of an intermediate/advanced pianist. We will talk about both theory and applications, and cover concepts ranging from chords and scales, to diatonic harmony, voicings, substitutions, soloing, tensions, and much more.
In this first lesson I will just give you an overview of what I plan to cover and also get you familiarized with a jazz ballad - we will return to this ballad many times to illustrate many of the theoretical and abstract concepts you will pick up along the way. You can just listen to it now, or try and learn to play it by copying what I do (this is not required for the remainder of the course, and just a "bonus challenge" for those of you up to the task). I hope this course inspires and motivates younger pianists who want to master this fascinating art form.

That piece of music brought tears to my eyes. From a very young age I remember asking my mother if I could learn the piano, I played until 9 years old, got a distinction in my exam. Unfortunately family dissolved, many unloved moments until i left home. I never played again, but always had a piano in the house, hoping that my children may pick it up one day, they tinkered a bit, but nothing serious. Neither my husband or myself play, but, I still have a piano. I don't believe in coincidences, your video just popped up in my feed, it made me stop, look and listen. I'm now 62, crying at you playing. Maybe it's time to start again and what a wonderful way to learn. Thank you so much. ❤

Thank you for your time and effort to make these wonderful videos. Most of others are playing difficult pieces which is impossible for beginners to follow, so we have to buy their courses or membership. You are the only one which is totally free with 1st class standard. Thank you so much!
This is what I’ve been looking for! I love jazz, but so many people make it difficult then charge for the beginning pieces plus throw in so much confusing music theory. Thank you!

I got stuck with just using the rootless voicings, and only comfortable using left had with the base chords and right had with the notes. Hopefully you can add some sheets of the lessons so we can download and print? Thanks once again for sharing your jazz piano passion and skill👏👏👏

Hi. Im really tring to learn piano to be a better producer. I want to learn chords and learn everything about how to compose music just enough to become a better producer (not too worried about becoming an amazing player). I know a decent amount of basics such as scales, diads, triads, sus2 and sus4, but thats about it. No. You are correct. My yet-unfulfilled idea was to go back to it and analyze it using all of the techniques I taught, which is what I'll likely do at some point.

This is nice... I kinda wish the software would change colors when you have multiple presses .. so even if E is blue because you played it.. when you played it again, it should change to yellow, then red again until is fades out.. then blue again. It would make it easier to follow multiple keys that are pressed when they are already pressed before.

We will talk about ideas in the first few videos, before talking about specifics and implementation. Wait, this will come. For example, around lesson 10 I'll talk about how famous pianists voice their chords (Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, etc).
❤ once my kids are in bed I will practice ❤
[copy past other comments here] and add my gratitude!
Can anyone actually advise me an artist who writes jazz piano like the one the video.
I would love to do this, but the glaring white screen above the keyboard prevents me. A lot of people suffer with bright white light on there eyesight, but very few video lessons accomodate this problem with a different less intrusive colour scheme, such a shame !!!

But you don't have to do anything in this lesson yet ... The work only starts in Lesson #2, where the discussion is very basic.
So, if I’m understanding correctly, at precisely 4:15 (for ex) this chord could be called (built as) any one of the three listed to the right, but is more commonly referred to as E min9 flat 5 over B-flat? So what I will be working to understand next is why the 9 is added to the top and why the flat five is repeated up top…AND…how to know this when using only Fake book or Real book charts. This is awesome. Thx again.
@MangoldProject
10 ай бұрын
We'll answer all of those questions throughout the course. You cannot know how to voice a chord based on a real book chart. In fact, the real book assumes you "know what you're doing" and doesn't hold your hand 95% of the time. It also assumes you'll be reharmonizing a lot. I'll teach you how to voice chords at we approach Lesson #10 or so. Stick around and you'll find out!

@@MangoldProject I am onto you 😉 i’m learning that every time you leave a little crumb trail, that they are there to peak the interest so in a later lesson it’s more meaningful to the student. You are an awesome excellent skilled teacher. Just like in the new lesson five, you revealed the 251 and451 progression with the unknown “?” chords. I know with patience these mysteries will be resolved too. I’m still working hard with the cord and scale chapters to transpose to different keys and different voicings, but determined to keep up. Can’t thank you enough.
I ended up taking screenshots of all these cord voicings. I don’t suppose there is a PDF of the score available? Many thanks.

Really enjoying this course. Just this morning I had another aha moment relistening to lesson two when you explained again that these were all unique seventh chords. Then I realized all of the voicings are a manifestation of this, and it made them less scary/intimidating. Thx again.
Question: I took screen shots of the chords in the opening example. But in lesson two the ballad uses different chords in two of the measures as shown here kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5yauq2DmJuah7w.htmlfeature=shared&t=1007 Will this be explained in later lessons? I’m working with them as if they are simply different voicings to see if I’m missing something. Thx.

The version of the ballad used after Lesson 1 is a simplified form, which will get complicated as we work through the course and pick up ideas about harmonizations. Eventually we will recover the original "full" form shown in Lesson 1.
