Jay Leno went on Cycle Drag youtube show and talked about how you should never buy an Orange County chopper. Paul Tuetul Sr didn't take kindly to that and responded by saying it was a gift and that Jay Leno was getting old and grumpy.

    Paul's response to the question didn't even speak to the electrical problem Jay complained about. Jay complained the electrical ran through a light assembly. So if the bulb fails the bike shuts off. A bulb on a chopper would likely be the most commonly failing part on that bike. So to run the electrical in a way that a bulb failure will shut it of while riding is a very very bad design, and likely was a shortcut during assembly. His second complaint about camber was valid as well. When Paul responded to that complaint by saying the bike has the same camber angle as a stock Harley is misleading. It may have the same camber angle, but the front forks were almost twice as long. Which will make it very bad a turning and stability. So to keep the camber angle the same as stock while lengthening the forks is a bad design choice. Jay was right in both concerns, and Paul tried to save face by being misleading with his answers hoping people would buy his bullshit response.

    Jay Leno isn't the only person claiming that Paul's bikes are inferior. Regardless of the expensive engine and parts, if the manufacturing of the bike is no Bueno, it's going to be considered a bad build. Can I build bikes? No but I've seen quality custom bikes of all kinds and I can recall seeing a few OCC bikes and they were not anything special just like ice recently seen two of the builds from Gotham garage and they are far superior in comparison. Loved dudes show, but you cannot deny someone the right to critique your art just because you like letterman more. Leno is a car guy, he knows quality when he sees it.

Longer down tubes on the frame. #3. Backbone of the frame is longer. #4. This makes the bike hard to handle. This is a fact Paul. P.S. motor & trans doesn't have anything to do with the issue.

  • @jamesberry276

    @jamesberry276

    Simply having the same rake doesn't make for the same handling characteristics. As You said the front end length, trail, stretch, how fat the hopitey-hop fat as a 55 gallon drum rear tire is compared to the pizza cutter with front tire is all play a part in the rolling abominations handling. Funny before that reality drama came on TV the orange county bikes were more tasteful & traditional machines. I didn't care for the show or the motorcycles but to each his own.

    I didn’t see Leno taking a shot at creativity. He essentially said the chopper was a display piece and not really for riding. That seems to be a common viewpoint of people who have had choppers from OCC. Leno was asked a question in front of a camera and he gave an honest opinion. How can anyone be made at that. He is a collector and connoisseur of vehicles. How can anyone be upset with his apparent honest response to a question. It would be worse if he lied.

    This situation is kinda misleading if you don’t know about the custom one off builds or their mass production models. They had a low tier end of choppers that were complete garbage. Unless you spent $75k+ on them you got a shit bike. Now their complete custom builds for companies or individual customers aren’t meant to be comfortable. They’re meant to look stylish. I’ve been inside a Ferrari and I wouldn’t drive it across the country let alone a city. Iron Horse Choppers are no different. They’re supposed to look cool but they’re certainly not a bagger. Anybody who I know that bought an OCC chopper had usually nothing but problems with it. Big price tag with a stock 80 in.³ motor not all that impressive. I had an excess amount of free time I would do long road trips on a chopper, but definitely beats your body up a little little bit more on longer runs.

    I watched an episode of orange county chopper and watched as one of the guys built a battery box. It turned out to small but instead of building another or altering the box to fit the battery correctly they just jammed the battery in the box. The was to me a red flag on how they built bikes. As far as choppers being" ride comfortable", for the most part they are not easy to ride. I believe they are built for aesthetics or just because it looks cool.

    I had a custom bike built by scooter shooters Out of Indiana Scooter shooters was on an episode of biker build off . The chooper they built me was the biggest piece of shit on earth. Every time I took the bike out, it broke down . It had a BDL open belt drive on it that I broke three times . Every time I drove the bike, ten bolts would fall off the bike because it vibrated so bad my hands would become numb because of the vibration . I had to pull over every five miles . The mirror flew off when I was driving on the express way . A bolt came out of the open belt drive, sending it through the open drive belt,putting a big slit in it . I sold the bike cheap just to get rid of it . What a mistake that was .

    he skirted over the tail light wiring question by just saying “even new bikes have problems.” the reality is, yeah, new bikes have problems, but one of those problems is not the bike shutting off when your tail light bulb blows. that’s a bad wiring job. he says the brakes are top of the line, sure, but were they bled correctly? are the calipers appropriately matched to the master cylinder bore? the rake might be 35° but the geometry still feels off when you’re leaning half a mile over the gas tank to reach the bars. this is something you need to account for when selecting bar angle and rake. it’s like building a car and saying “the geometry is the same as a honda civic, we just put the drivers seat and pedals two feet back. what do you mean it doesn’t feel good to drive?!”

    I have built Custom Tractor Truck Units and Specialized Heavy Equipment. No bikes. Custom Car Audio and Mobile Electronic Systems. With Custom work some things get lost in translation very easily. Sometimes you get the look, but it is fragile and expensive to fix. Some clients understand that. Some do not. They get an expectation because of what they paid. Not realizing that what they asked for was either impractical, illogical, or defied certain laws of Physical Science altogether and looked great but was not functional. With custom work. It is no different thean building a race engine. If you buy a bolt on kit, you get bolt on results. If you build from raw design, there is trial and error. I have built Custom Semis that the factory took 6 weeks with an engineer, in about 12 days that passed the DOT first shot, with like 4-5 other guys. Experience is important. No matter what, custom is custom. Usually one of a kind. That's is sometimes all you get. Just being honest. We were something back in the day. Good times.
