A can’t miss conversation with the great Jay Leno, where Bill Maher and Jay share hilarious stories like Jay’s true feelings about his beef with Jimmy Kimmel, the time Jay took toilet paper as payment for a stand-up gig, why Jay hid in the closet and eavesdropped on NBC execs during the Tonight Show drama, what NBC told Jay when they fired him, what made the blind guy who climbed Mount Everest furious, and Jay’s dinner with Gorbachev.

In the 80's when Jay was filling in for Carson on The Tonight Show, I helped write his monologue, he had other writers too...I was told the magic # of jokes he needed was 26 jokes and I actually got 3 jokes ON in the monologue. One had to do with Reagan's age...one had to do with Leona Helmsley and one other I can't recall. It was so long ago that we faxed in our jokes. It was exciting to watch the show hoping to hear one of my jokes! Great times! - Joe Johnson

@leomoonlady Thanks MoonLady! Jay is still the best. Im a car guy too so I loved Jay Leno's Garage which I think has ended. With no kids, who gets Jay's tremendous collection of fine autos? Jay I have room for two and I'll treat them well.
Jay is a humble guy. Every time Bill wanted to give him a compliment or praise, Jay would cut him off and tell a story. Respect.

Jay Leno is a rock in a turbulent world.
Jay is a class act and an amazing car and motorcycle collector. In one instance a lady called him and asked if he wanted to buy her late husbands Ferrari 275. Her husband paid $5800 for it and had told her that it was worth $350,000. Jay responded that he could give her the $350,000 for it but that it was worth closer to $4 million. Jay put her in touch with a friend of his with an auction company and told her that if she got over $3.5 million for it she would have to bake him some chocolate chip cookies. The car sold for $3.75 million.

I went to high school with Jay Leno. You know how people change? Not Jay. He is exactly the same person now as he was then, smart, authentic, and funny. My favorite story he told here was about him hiding in the closet, more than once, to overhear who was taking over the Tonight Show and then playing mind games with the top executive over what he said. Priceless. Jay always took big risks, they always paid off.

Over the years I've seen Jay show up at a motorcycle hangout here in Southern California. He comes alone..no "Crew". He is in one of his vintage cars or motorcycles and is totally approachable and will chat up anyone who wants to speak with him. A rarity in the Hollywood culture.

Jay Leno is a rare honest and moral guy in showbusiness. The more interviews I see with him, I appreciate him that much more. He was an easy punching bag for his middle of the road humor, but that's what was needed. Wow; what a guy! Jay Leno, that is.
One of the greatest stand up comedian of all time!…..he is 1000x better when just winging it on stage as opposed to reading what other writers wrote for him on The Tonight Show!…I met him several of times and he was and still is, quick as a bolt of lightning ⚡️,with his jokes!…….extremely generous and gracious!……zero ego! ZERO! 😮…🙏🏼…..I told him back in ‘99 at the Burbank studios, as I was auditioning for a small part, he came up to us and said “ sorry boys the part is taken by me! You can go home now! Nothing to see here!” 🤣…..we all laughed and he walked towards us and said “Scram! Go on!” 😂 He started to break character and joined us and invited us to craft service !…he was extremely approachable and was so comfortable and at “home” just making people laugh!……I told him that as a kid, I was really happy that he got the Tonight Show instead of Joan Rivers or Letterman!….he shook my hand and I told him that he reminded me of my uncle who looked like Elvis when he was younger and Jay told me that he used to get that when he was younger too! He was so cool man……we walked to the shitty craft service and he looked at the food and I said ….” So Jay………what’s your beef with this craft service food?” He said……”what’s my beef? I’ll tell ya what’s my beef!”….😂😂😊……he always had 10,000 jokes that he was ready for at a drop of a dime if needed! Jay “ The Legend” Leno!…….🫡📺🏆………………………..the hell with Howard Stern and his diarrhea mouth!🫵🏻👎🏻…..he was a hater and now he has become exactly what he hated!……..hypocrite! Thank you Jay! For all the laughs and warmth! 🤘🏻

That's why I think Jay got the Tonight show after Carson. Jay always seems at ease and relaxed and people like that about him. He did the opening monologue on the Tonight show as if he was doing a comedy gig at a club he was totally at ease even though he's performing for millions of people. I liked Letterman and Conan in the late night time slot and when they went to other networks, but they both seem a bit self conscious that if they don't get the laugh they expect from their jokes it really bothers them.Jay never had that. Jay seemed like he could be spontaneous and come up with jokes off the top of his head where as Letterman and Conan seemed more regimented with their jokes and they dare not stray from telling the jokes exactly how they were planned. It's hard to put into words ,but Jay is a special guy and comedian.

I love that Maher respects Leno and knows he's one of the current GOATS of all time(Seinfeld & Chapelle are the others) and knows Leno didn't screw over Conan. It was just business and ratings. Leno was #1 for 21+ years. That's almost impossible to replicate with anyone else.
I met Mr. Jay Leno when I worked at the Handy Market in Burbank, California, in 2006. While my co-worker worked on his request I mentioned meeting his welder that would sometimes do the bit where they zoomed in on him while Jay says 'then we will send this guy to you!' Jay says oh yeah, says his name, then proceeded to tell me a joke about a boy on the side of the road with a welding helmet...he then stopped suddenly and said, 'you'll have to excuse me there's children around and it's inappropriate.'

Jay’s obviously a very charismatic, loquacious guy. In a vacuum he’s very likable doing this informal bullshitting, it’s where he thrives. Arguably as skilled at it as anyone alive, certainly the most experienced next to Letterman. That said, Bill is a terrible listener. He’s already dragged Kimmel through the history of “The Tonight Show” on this podcast, and Jimmy (begrudgingly) explained to Bill that there was no doubt w/ anyone in the know, Jay is a ruthless, bad guy. It’s settled. Yet here Bill is doubling and tripling down the same arguments that Jimmy picked apart. Jay is the common denominator where late night hosts get fkd over. Bill is getting old. Literally and figuratively. I’m still here for his content but he’s aggravating me more and more and he’s misspeaking, mispronouncing, repeating things, just doing more and more old guy shit.

Sometimes Bill is a bit dim, par example he doesn't seem to understand that if they want you out there are two ways. 1. Get out your fired! 2. They slowly start burning you in every way thinkable until you go! Leno's 1000 cuts are true! 😎
Got to say I love this new format of podcasting. It seems personal and relatable and the guest are so at ease. Love the look and tone also- the pink/blue neon lights, dim lighting....these things add to the atmosphere. Thanks Bill Maher.

This had echos of the Grumpier old men movies. The bickering, the back and forth, such a great episode between two guys that clearly share a lot of mutual respect and would consider each other old friends.

My narrative is this is like an "anachronistic" vignette of Bill and Jay's relationship in the late 70s when Bill was coming up trying to get spots or favors from Leno but there is the respect there. In fact I can almost see the subtext in it imagine the time elapsed in this long form interview actually as young bills trying to keep him on the hook he doesn't want to let him go, you know .Jay of course is completely aware

Of course that's exactly what's happening if you replace favors or spots with information about the Conan debacle .I do however like the inside baseball talk about showbiz it's kind of pimp when Leno chuckles to himself "I know, I know"

I have always heard from comedians how much they respected/ admired Jay’s comedy. Saying he is one of the best and how he had to change a bit when he was doing the tonight show. For the tv audience. More vanilla. So I would love to see his act. Especially since he doesn’t put out any comedy specials. I really have only seen him catering to the TV audience. I would like to see him let it rip. Always had the feeling he was a very decent guy, but he seems to have a negative reputation from comedians who took sides in the late night wars.

@@StuPedassol You seemed surprised (“I’m not kidding”) that Leno is funny, but he’s long been one of the standup greats. It may be a bit like, “I watched Tom Brady play, but, no kidding, he’s actually very good.” But I misread, maybe. No insult intended.
Thanks Bill didn't know Jay was such a great human being .
This was a very enjoyable episode. I love Jay. When I was about 11 years old I caught Jay guesting hosting the Tonight Show. He was the reason I started watching late-night TV.
The Dangerfield story was incredible!
Bill, this is your best one yet. Leno is amazing.
Jay is such a pro, one of the best crowd work comedians I’ve ever seen. Love this interview Bill, I met Jay when he filmed his first special American Dream, we were next to each other in the bathroom and Jay was just riffing off comments I was making. Great podcast! 👍❤️

I never liked his comedy because I thought it was too clean and crowd pleasing. But in retrospect, I have a lot of respect for him to still be somewhat funny over the decades and for being married to the same woman. Jay is an example that not all comedians have to be damaged neurotics.

Jay Leno is a really good guy
one of the best interviews ever of Jay Leno. Jay usually doesn't reveal much about his personal life or experiences but he felt relaxed and it showed. Well done Bill ! Jay is a class act in a very seedy industry. Makes the Letterman's and Howard Sterns look so petty for the years they just railed against Jay in the media.
This was such a great show! I love Jay Leno and Bill Maher. They are so different yet so great together! I'm lucky to be hearing them together.

I agree and even Letterman who's a well known Democrat never made his show about hating Bush JR or making the same jokes after he left office. Sure he did Clinton jokes mostly about the sex scandal and he would make his Bush JR jokes but nothing like today.

Just Jay. That's what I thought of watching his terrific standup show from the fourth row recently at, as Bill put it, one of those upstate New York casinos, lol. No band, no Johnny Carson theatre, no trappings of any kind - just a stool with a bottle of water, a microphone... and, just Jay. That's when you see what a true comic star is all about! A night chock full of jokes, and every one a home run! Amazing writing, Jay's delightfully unique delivery and voice, and incredible comedic timing. My sides were splitting lol. But more than that, you could just tell what a humble and genuine and caring human being he is. He made just a couple brief non-comedic references to his life and projected such kindness and authenticity. I had to relisten to this podcast, and was so very gratified that Bill praised Jay repeatedly for the wonderful man that he obviously is and has always been. Great episode! Enjoyed them both!
This is my new favorite podcast, such smooth, wonderful conversation.
