When I read the complaints about Jay not disclosing what he plans to do with a private, major investment of his at some date in the future, I first think of his privacy. If I had a fraction of what he's invested in his collection (OK, a VERY tiny fraction), I certainly wouldn't be broadcasting what my financial future would be. It's no body else's business. With all the crap being broadcast these days about individual's private information (private or public individuals), one of the last things I'd want to do is post that sort of info on the internet. Leave him alone! Many of us who enjoy Jay's presentations very much appreciate his efforts and thank him greatly for his time (and investment)!!

Resilience should be the theme of this show. If parents and society continue to shelter young people, they struggle to cope with life's hardships. Jay is a prime example of someone who continues to take risks (even in his 70's), and when things literally blow up in his face, he just dusts himself off and keeps on trucking. Great interview and great example.

I completely agree with Jay and Adam about this generation. All i thought about as a teen was the independence that a car and license would bring to me. None of the teens I know are interested in cars at all. And not only that, a lack of curiosity and independent thought, no ability to problem solve. It's kind of worryingly.

Thanks for the great interview with Jay Leno! Glad to see he is doing well. As far as your conversation near the end of the interview dealing with kids being afraid or not wanting to get in a car or do certain things the last decade or so, it's been called "helicoptering". One or both of the parents hover over the kid(s) to keep them ultra safe & afraid to get in harms way or offend anyone. God forbid they drank from a hose or stayed out & played ball till it gets dark! It seems part of the newer generations where everybody has to get a trophy so nobody's feelings gets hurt. I guess it's the wussification of our culture.

Thoughts on the boys/cars convo: I have 2 boys (young, under 5) and a 19 year old nephew. I run my own business and have a handful of old cars I work on and drive. My wife has a nicer/newer family car but everything I own and drive is ancient. My boys jump into my car and do the steering wheel thing, they talk to me about them, they ask to ride in them, they'll play with their cars and pretend to be wrenching on them, etc. My nephew only recently got any interest in cars and got a license. The nephew I brought on last summer as a paid apprentice to show him some job skills, he's mostly a video game guy. He stayed with us about 3-4 days a week for several months. As part of earning his keep I had him help me redo my classic Olds 442. Sanding down frame rails, undercoating, suspension install on all 4 corners, transmission install, exhaust, etc. I also had him help with some tuning on an old Z28 I have and an old chevy custom K20 pickup. We worked on old cars, we drove old cars, we did some full throttle runs on old cars. My goal was very simple...this kid had no love for cars and I was at least going to introduce him. No cars like this at his mom and dad's house. At the end of the summer....he wanted a car, but an older car. He's a very smart kid, he loves to DIY stuff...he did not know about this world. He's used to these rolling appliances on 4 wheels that all look the same, are inaccessible to the end user and don't have any soul in them. Car guys, tell me 5 new cars you'd be excited about if you could send them back in time to when you were a kid. Now pick 5 under $80k. Then try picking 5 that the average kid comes in contact with in a middle class household. We killed new car culture with a glut of EPA regulations and crossover SUVs and then wonder why the kids checked out. You're a car guy but you need to realize the average kid has a dad who can't change a flat tire much less a spark plug. And the average family can't afford a fun car unless it's used and dad can handle the work himself. There used to be dozens of fun cars within reach of a middle class family. Also....my boys don't get unlimited screen time. My nephew did growing up. My boys I spend time with, rough housing and tossing a football around, toy cars and pedal cars, etc. When they get TV time it's not Blippie or anything stupid on KZread that infantilizes people. It's about the kind of stuff boys thought was awesome for generations, the stuff I liked when I was a kid. Maybe I'm wrong and they'll hate cars in 15 years but I wouldn't bet on it. I've seen too many people addicted to the screens in the generation between me (millennial) and my kids. We are trying hard to get them hooked on the real world.

I spent hours laughing to myself as a kid on the toilet looking at a book with images of Jay Leno and a news article with his comment on the wacky stuff news put out and probably read through it five times over those years along with Garfield and and Gary Larson

I am 56 and learned early that even if invited - you get into a car and break something, either the parents OR the guy are going to be absolutely PISSED. It is the same reason I do not touch other cars or boats (my dad used to race a boat) - in case you damaged something you could not afford to break. For the average person who has no ability to fix or have things fixed - you don't touch those items - even if invited.
