Jay Gould's Daughter - Clawhammer Banjo Lesson

f♯DF♯AD - I learned this song from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. In this tutorial I explain the history behind the song, and how the tune is played using traditional overhand (clawhammer) and two-finger banjo picking techniques.
Jay Gould's daughter said before she died
Daddy O Daddy don't let the bums ride,
If ride they must let them ride on the rod
They can put their lives in the hands of God...
Early one morning it began to rain
Around the corner came a passenger train,
Sitting on the bumper was Hobo John
He's a good old rounder but he's dead and gone...
Jay Gould's daughter said before she died
There's two more roads that I'd like to ride,
Tell me daughter what can they be?
The Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe...
Jay Gould's daughter said before she died
There's two more drinks that I'd like to try,
Tell me daughter what can they be?
Hot cup of coffee and a cold glass of tea...

Awesome! Because I just learn songs as I feel i want to Learn them and have time, the biggest reason I love these is for the history of these songs that you know. On top of just hearing you play and sing

Great one Clifton! The song is full of notes I've rarely heard on the banjo. The story is a great exercise in historical reality. Reminds me of this really great old movie from 1973, called Emperor of the North Pole. Had Lee Marvin and Earnest Borgnine in it. Set in the 1930's. Hobos riding the rails, hobo camps, and ruthless train conductors. Really good film!

Hey Clifton, I've just bought my first banjo. I like how you play without finger picks and I don't like using them myself. Are they something I can do without or do certain songs need them?

People had been playing the banjo for 200 years before those metal fingerpicks were even thought of. I haven't used them myself in over two decades.

It's a lovely sounding song, it's interesting to see the rather nasty and mean origins of the song, making fun of someone's dead daughter, still a great song!
