Waltrip is one of the few drivers who not only changed the sport on the track, but in the booth. He's in a class with Ned Jarrett in how one generation knew him as a champion, and the next knew him as a top racing analyist

Excellent analysis, I never really thought about it like that, I'm 45, I knew him as both. But now thinking about it, you are absolutely correct. There's a whole generation of grown race fans that never knew the on-track Darrell Waltrip. People that don't remember the on-track fights between him and Earnhardt, and how Earnhardt called on him to Pilot one of his cars years later. We were all surprised and extremely happy to see that, the NASCAR I love and remember.

I couldn’t have said it better. You are 100% exactly right. Some of us remember both.
Before Kyle Busch, Darrel Waltrip was the definition of a polarizing figure in NASCAR during his prime. Damn, was he the master of stirring the pot against Bobby Allison and Rusty Wallace. Will forever respect one of the best to ever do it.

I don’t think he’s saying anything about dale. It’s common knowledge dale was polarizing., any non nascar fan would know this. In today’s day and age it’s easy to forget that Darrell was a polarizing character.

Nobody won more races than Waltrip from 1971-2010 than Darrell Waltrip. He won on every type of track, but was almost unbeatable on short tracks. He won over 1/4 of all races run between 1977 and 1984. Even beyond being a top 6 driver ever, he was one of the most iconic commentators in racing history. He's simply one of the greatest to ever do it

I'd honestly love to see your take on a Michael Waltrip documentary. He may not be as well regarded or liked as his brother, but his story is definitely one of the most interesting ones, and he remains one of my favourite legacy drivers, right up there with Alan Kulwicki, Mark Martin, Geoff Bodine, and of course, ol' DW.

One of the most gut wrenching things is Darrell's retirement party before the 500. When him and Dale cutting up and talking about just hanging out once Dale retired. Potentially in the booth at one point.
Welcome back this weekend DW. BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY.
Ken Schrader started on the pole in 89 at Daytona. DW was on the outside of the front row. That wreck at Daytona in 91 is the one I believed that scared DW and took his nerve. After breaking his leg the year before, he didn't want to do anything to put his family in peril. That wreck was the beginning of the end of DW's career.

Yeah, I remember him saying that on the DJD. But in 93 and 94 he wasn't as competitive as he was in 91 and 92. Even his last win at darlington he was near the back all race and almost went down a lap a couple of times. The 95 wreck was just the final nail in the coffin. He got beat up in 90, 91, and 95. I have no doubt all that was in the back of his mind and he decided that while he wanted to race, he couldn't be that risk taker that he used to be. Not with two lillte girls and a wife depending on him

Waltrip has made claim that JJ told him that as soon as he went into turn one after talking the checkered flag, the motor was going to blow up.
13:29 Not to take anything away from ol' DW, but Dale cleaning his windshield while the car is moving is sheer legendary!
Darrell was my first hero driver, car, sponsor "Dew", jaws, and his dancing"Winning"! Dale was the black mamba trouble, thought the battles were awesome. Terrific broadcaster, humor and compassion for his career and fans. Then a Kyle Busch fan, and love Chastain 's approach today, love it .
D.W. wasn't in the spotlight. He WAS the spotlight
I mean DEI hiring DW is the equivalent of Kyle Busch hiring Kevin Harvick or vice versa.
The first time I heard of Darrel Waltrip was, as with most mid 2000s kids, from Pixar’s Cars movie, when he was cast as his in universe counterpart, Darrel Cartrip! (I’m certain he was also in Herbie Fully Loaded, Disney’s other car based, NASCAR racing featured family film the year prior, but I’ll have to rewatch it again to be sure!) And as with most things, stuff like this teach me just how important these awesome people actually are! They aren’t just official NASCAR people that did voices and cameos in racing movies for kids and families as a nice tribute to the real life sport of NASCAR and auto racing in general, they are genuinely awesome people with amazing history! Some parts great, some not so great, some parts happy, some funny, some sad and some just plain crazy! Long story short, thank you and everyone who share all these amazing stories of the people behind one of my favorite sports of all time!💖🏎️💖
The early 80s Cars were so fuckin sick. Just beautiful.
Can we appreciate the time he puts into these videos we may not get video for month but they never fail🖤
I was too young of a NASCAR fan when people like DW were out there, and I really appreciate you making these videos. I only recently started getting back into NASCAR and am loving your content more than almost any other racing channel right now. Keep up the great work :)
Darrell is just awesome. There was no watching racing without him. BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY LETS GO RACING BOYS!!!
after hearing Darrel's speech after dales death, it actually brought me to tears. he spoke all his words perfectly
Such a great video. Never let us down Elly
He’s 6th on my all-time list. 1st on my commentators list. Can’t wait to see him in the booth this weekend.
DW will forever be the GOAT
Excellent video, you did Darrell and Dale good. All positive, no negative, all gas, no brakes.
I love the decision to play "More Gun" during the Junior Johnson introduction Edit: It has also been shown that Brett Bodine did actually win that NW race, even without the scoring error
I grew up in the era where Darrell Waltrip was the funny guy who raced cars and when he won, he'd give an amusing interview to end the show. I liked him and enjoyed seeing him on TV. Then my dad shocked me by telling me that DW was one of the most hated drivers on the track in the 70's and early 80's. I still don't see how that was possible, but oh well. 🤷♂
I always get so excited when ellyproductions posts, cause I know it’s going to be great

Darrell Waltrip is STRONGLY underrated.
I’ve always loved cars, but never gotten into nascar. My dad never watched it but my uncle did/does. Your videos have inspired me to finally make a real effort. I can’t overstate their quality. Extraordinarily informative and entertaining. Thank you for doing what you do. Also, I’d never seen that invocation. I tend not to be shaken by such things, especially when they aren’t related to my family, but that really brought tears to my eyes. Among many other factors, it’s moving to see such bombastic personalities truly touched and taking the time to so sincerely put others first.

"I guess he's alright, isn't he" has to be one of the most polarizing calls in the history of any sport
He would drive the car as fast as he would run his mouth
21:39 is one of the most chilling moments of all recorded sports history. There is no way Darrell had any idea how many people would listen to those words over and over again, and what was happening on turn 4 as they left his mouth. One thing that always brings me some solace, is the knowledge that one of the very last sights Dale ever saw was Michael and Jr. heading towards the finish line with the entire field far far away. I just hope Dale’s alright…
Amazingly well done video, grest emotion taken out of it. Keep it up!

Looking back on it I find Tony's remarks on Darrell funny because even though Darrell went 8 years winless, Tony never came close to doing as well in his career. Edit: NASCAR career (as a driver), as in the same series Darrell raced in. I know Tony has done well in other ventures.

@@arthuralford yeah well, Waltrip got 84 wins, a Daytona 500 win, and 2 of his 3 championships were among the most dominant in the sport's history. Tony may be the most talented American in motorsports history, but his NASCAR career doesn't come close.

Darrell 84 wins, Tony 49 And Tony did all that it in what is statistically the most competitive era in NASCAR (2000-2014) And that’s just NASCAR. @@quackers584 1, Darrell won 3. 2 of those were in a row with 12 wins each. 2, out of Tony's 3, 2 of them are among the weakest championship seasons in NASCAR history. 3, I never debated Tony's accomplishments as an owner compared to Darrell, just as a driver. 4, I never debated Tony's accomplishments in other series either, just in NASCAR as a driver. 5, Darrell is tied for 4th on the all-time wins list while Tony is tied for 15th. Tony's a great team owner, as as I previously stated, arguably the most talented American in motorsports history. I'm just stating that Tony really has no room to talk about the final 2 years of Waltrip's career in Cup when Tony finished behind Danica Patrick in points in 2014 and only got a top 15 points run in 2015 because of "win and you're in".

F1 doesnt even comes close to the off-track lore complexity the NASCAR has. Its just 1 guy from the richest team that keeps winning with 10+ seconds lead all season long and you are gobbling on that until the guy retires. There is nothing even remotely engaging or exciting about that.
