Jaw Rock Crusher - BUILD Ep.4
Using the old 1k62 lathe to turn and thread bolts and adapters. Machining an adapter on the lathe and vertical steel milling machine for the mag drill so I can use a hole saw. Turning a camshaft / eccentric shaft for the moving jaw of the rock crusher.
What is a jaw rock crusher - a crusher that has jaws and crushes rocks, concrete, bricks etc. and turns it into gravel.

I think most of those jaw crushers like that use bushings on the eccentric shaft instead of bearings. The bearings just can’t take that kind of abuse. I have a rock crushing/gravel pit excavation company about a 3000 feet from my house. Go up there often.
Was thinking... I bet you could adapt your firewood conveyor system to work with this crusher as well. That way, you can load the crushed material right into a trailer as it's being crushed so you can move it around to where you need it easier. Just an idea I had, not sure if it'd actually work or be practical in the end.
Legend has it that Donn is still stood there, twiddling his home made camshaft and giggling like a school girl. :D

👍🏻 A trick I use when using a holesaw, is to drill small holes in the cut around the circle no bigger than the blade to help remove chips.

I’ve seen that same idea used with a hole saw in wood as well. Anything to allow the chips to clear and prevent binding.

One about 6mm hole is good on the circle if you dont mind the extra hole.

@@JuhisTube Just drill the clearance hole either inside or outside depending on which side is the waste side of the cut. 🤷🏻♂️
I am inordinately pleased that the solution to the tapered plate you're putting the bolt on that I came up with what's the same as the one you used.
I'm foreseeing a future overhead hoist build. Lord knows he needs one. Nice work. 👍👍
I'm just...impressed! Well done to you, what a joy it is to watch you work 👌
Watching your work is very enjoyable, I wish the videos would be longer
Donn you are an amazing engineer! Your problem solving is awesome! 🙋 Greetings from Texas!
Always an awesome build on your channel. Thanks
Excellent work👍👍👍. Thanks for sharing
Donn I got you on how you will get motion now. That is pretty cool. This is going to be a super awesome build once done.
Im just a simple wood butcher by trade so I didn't understand half of what I just watched, but when It started forming on the lathe then it all made sense,, regardless of that Im always in awe of your skills and simple no nonsense approach to doing things - thank you for continuing to create and inspire 👍
Nice 😶
Nice work
beautiful engineering :)
Merci
Very interesting to watch, never thought of how to make things crooked by purpose on a lathe! :-D Thx for the vid!
Brilliant

Eccentric shaft on the lath is genius, great video 👍
You one clever lad , indeed...been learnin , studyin , and buildin....now you gonna get your just deserts....crushed rock ...!! Lol
Nice lathe work!!!
Not surprising but always entertaining watching you put your limitless skill on show again and again! Brilliant as always Donn. Cheers from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺🦘🐨🍺🍺🐨🦘🇦🇺🇪🇪
I can’t wait to test the crusher when completed. I’ve started searching scrap metals now to build mine.

Hello Donn, Looking great, can't wait to see the finished product. Thanks for the video, and have a good week.
Coming along nicely! We shared this video in our homemade tools forum this week :)
Great video
I have a idea for you my friend !! your next projekt should be a universal hanging crane inside the workshop ! you really need a hanging crane for lifting everything instead of that Motor-crane :P I know you can do it . You are a master constructer in my appinion :)
That eccentric jaw shaft assembly is known as the pitman..... nice work.
Bravo 💪👏👏

Always interesting to see how other people do things, I've turned one before using a 4 jaw chuck in the head and tailstock. Offset each side equally using dial indicators

They are called "hillside washers", available through most fastener and industrial suppliers
Beautiful !
Someone has probably already said this but what the hell, I'll say it again. You're a very gifted craftsman with incredibly versatile talent. Nice job on the camshaft!
I have been living whole my life seeing stone crusher, my dad started stone crusher business when he was young and m continuing his business, m must tell you that m really impressed with your own made stone crusher, it's very close to perfect... like you use to say "pretty good"
That was awesome Donn, showed some great information and fabrication again. Really enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing with us. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋
Nice idea on the adapter for the holesaws! I’m going to copy that
Hey, Donndiy!! Great work!! Really enjoy your invetivness.. Awesome jig work. That's the key, precisely made!!
Nice work. Great!
My three-jaw would have tossed that cam after about 30 seconds. It doesn't like interrupted cuts. My holesaws last a long time because my drill press sucks. It stalls out before it breaks the teeth off. I also add compressed air to help clear the chips or back it out often and run a wire brush on the teeth for a second. Nice video, I hope the build is as good as the content you put up on your channel.
A cup of coffee and Donndiy, now that's a Good morning
A masterpiece! I hope to make something similar, this has been such a valuable series for me. I plan on crushing a LOT of rocks eventually. Thanks loads
Very good.
@0:17 Was the pun intended? "These have to be beefy to withstand the "crushing" forces." Clever. Very clever. ;-)
They do make wedges for bolting through channel iron. I used thousands of them in steel buildings and on crushers we rebuilt for the gold mines here in S.D.
Awesome work👍👌
There used to be special tapered square washers available to square up bolts in the flange of old fashioned "I" beams and "C" sections before parallel flange beams and C sections. 🙂
It WILL be a success! 👌🏻
Hey thanks to share your knowledge ... When I watch "jaw rock crusher build" video I wondered and tried ımagine how made You shaft. This video was very satisfy
Needed a spot face tool for that channel hole , used on castings to machine it flat for nuts and washers , like a end mill upside down really handy for jobs like that!
I love it !! Great design very well thought out !! This will crush some rocks for sure and I believe that shaft will hold up fine . 👍👍👍Great job as alway's !!
I have faith . ! Super
Very cool!
👍 👍 👍
I can't wait to see this thing work. I am kinda familiar with what a rock crusher does. Being around these but much bigger as I was growing up at my grandpap's stone quary here in the USA state of Pennsylvania. I dig it. Keep up the great work. 👍

Interesting
You can use a centre in the 3 jaw and tack a drive dog to the shaft rather than try to offset in the 3 jaw. Your end result looked good though!
Amazing project bro 💪👌👌👌
11:00 I'd feel better with more radius on the transition from the bearing to the cam. 13:20 Looks like you mitigated it by tapering the cam side. Should give you a shot for success.
I'm surprised any tapered flange channel still exists. Channels and beams both changed to parallel flanges about 35 to 40 years ago here in NZ. I'm old enough to remember using tapered washers which are still available.
I see the Makita reps listened. Congrats on the cordless driver😝 Hope it was sponsored

Nope, still not sponsored by them. 🤔
The first thing I thought was wether the offset in that cam would be enough. You said the same thing just as I was thinking it. Looks friggin awesome, though....just like always.
@kameljoe21
3 жыл бұрын
I think it should be enough. You do not really need to move the plate that much even the smallest amount is enough to bind and crush rocks. Someone said maybe 10mm to 20mm is the offset. Though I think it will work very well. If not its just a new shaft that has to be made.
Your the Best!!
1к62 👍👍👍
Nice job, I would have kept both center holes though!
Interesting way to go about removing the angle from the C channel. They do make angled square washers for that because that’s how structural steel is assembled.
Awsm
Would it even be a Donn Diy video without the oiling toothbrush😎
How much is the 'throw' ? 10mm ? 1 side, so total movement 20mm ?
13:04 THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID!
nice job you do👍
Donn, will you need a counterweight on your camshaft to reduce vibration, and will you use a flywheel to build up momentum? It's looking good, so far.
@dodgeme1986truck
3 жыл бұрын
More than likely will need a flywheel and probably would need a balance shaft but we used a counter rotating drum crusher when I worked at the quarry
@nickopedia5669
3 жыл бұрын
I suspect it won't be spinning fast enough to need to worry about that. It depends on the type of rock he wants to crush, but I think it'll need a lot of gearing down for a typical 6-10hp engine to run it.
@mikeznel6048
3 жыл бұрын
Not gonna be spinning g fast enough to need a counter weight.
@dodgeme1986truck
3 жыл бұрын
@@mikeznel6048 it will need a massive flywheel and be balanced because rock crushing machines are normally run at 3000-4000rpm as rock breaks easier when struck repeatedly with a high impact velocity
I can see why these cost thousands of dollars. Fantastic job !
That super badass I never knew that's how they did that I always wondered
👍👍👍
I'd say that's got a 98% chance of working. The 2% bit will be the number of belts you use and the override system for when it jams. Bother these problems can be fixed after a test run though.

When your good looks won't take you where you want to go, then reinvent the wheel. I wondered how to make a straight line "Oblong" and then call it a crankshaft theoretically.... right?? Same principle but less journals on the unit and no connecting rods. Hardly wait to see it in operation... Just hope that the jaw is big enough to grind the stone. I am fairly sure where you live there are enough rocks to line the ocean floor and make a highway to the usa. I had a garden in a small town I lived in. Nice little town and well named... Rockport Washington. For every shovelful were at least fifty rocks of all sizes as well as the ones that were big enough to build a house IN them.
