👉🏻 PDLC Electric Field Induced Transparency: when a voltage is placed across Polymer-Dispersed Liquid-Crystal film, long skinny molecules align with the electric field allowing light to pass through without scattering- with the field off the molecules thermally randomize and then do scatter the light passing through, producing a milky white translucent appearance.
👉🏻 Deja Vu II: astonishing spring powered kinetic art. Crafted from wood this device has two disks and each has a pattern of curved spokes that can rotate at different rates and direction to produce interesting illusions of motion via moiré interference effects. A ribbon spring drives an ingenious mechanism that uses ratchets (and the rotational momentum of the disks) to create the various visual modes- a half rotation of the disks will result in 20+ minutes of motion. With a full loading of the spring hours of motion will ensue. Another amazing creation by artist and designer William Le.
👉🏻 "Swing Thing": folk craft kinetic art from the 1970s
👉🏻 Dual Axis Sand Pendulum: the kinetic energy trades back and forth between swinging toward the support arm and then swinging perpendicular to that path tracing Lissajous figures in the sand.
👉🏻 Scrap Metal Kinetic Sculpture: a bent spring becomes a coupled harmonic oscillator with two modes of oscillation, one along a horizontal direction and one at an angle.
👉🏻 Moiré Pattern Portal: rotational motion of this moiré pattern creates the animation of radial flowing motion.
👉🏻 "Focal Decoder" Holiday Card: hidden images are revealed through ingenious and intricate Moiré pattern interference.
👉🏻 Moiré Season's Greetings: rotational moiré pattern generation on a Winter Holiday card from MoMA.
👉🏻 Tricolor Plasma Globe and Glow Wand: an engineered mix of low pressure noble gasses exhibit three colors of glow discharge in the plasma filaments that rise upward due to heating.
👉🏻 The Mezmocoin Infinity: precision machined kinetic spinning tops with helical motion illusion- a simple and elegant physics toy for everyday carry.
👉🏻 d6 Cube Tops: symmetry axes are often associated with interesting physics.
👉🏻 Color Flame Birthday Candle Physics: the colored parts of these candle flames are due to excitation of specific chemical elements mixed into the wax.

I really really like that deja vu II! As for the golf ball teaser, could it have been done by soaking the woodto soften it, bending a side a bit, inserting the ball, then reshaping it before drying back to solid?

Using a hydraulic press you could squeeze the ball into the wooden frame, provided you applied enough moist heat (steam) to both the ball and the frame. You'd probably also need to place some support inside the frame on a vertical axis to prevent the wood from breaking. And I almost forgot- "Physics is the key to our future"!

@@fakenews7266 It was done by softening the wood with hot water so this person wasn't far off. Troll
The last one is done by softening the wood in the middle using steam so the wood can be moved further apart just enough to fit the ball through and then the wood is moved back into position and dried again, trapping the ball inside.

I think this is the correct method, but there is a guy who makes stuff with lathes, and I saw him cut material out of the cage itself, and then sand it down with the lathe until it became a ball in the cage..

Put compression pressure on the top&bottom side so that the long sides of wood arc (maybe also soak it in water) and then put the golf ball inside and without presser on the ends they return to closed state with ball inside (if it would have been soaked let it dry out)
My company installed a transit system that passed very close to apartment buildings. People on the transit cars could see into the apartments. The solution was liquid crystal "misting" windows that went opaque in those areas.
Steam boxes are routinely used by wookworkers to make wood pliable to a certain extent til it cools in whatever shape it has been bent. Thin layers works best so tighter bends can be achieved from laminating them with glue. In this case the 4 slender parts were easily deformed when inserting the ball and reformed before it cooled and dried.

Came here for this comment.
1st guess: I think there is a round plug at the bottom glued back in once the ball is inside 2nd guess: steam the wood until soft, compress ends towards center expanding the sides outwards enough to fit the ball, relax wood and let dry.

Does anyone else remember those focal decoders being used as copy protection on some computer games in the 80’s? You had to hold up a thing called a lens lok to the screen to try and decode the letters to access the game.

@@DrunkMagnus Im 51. We had a ZX Spectrum in the 80’s with the games being sold on audio tape which were easy enough to copy so the software companies tried all sorts of different copy protection from code wheels and charts to physical dongles that had to be plugged in before you could play the game. One of the ideas was this lens lok. On loading a block would appear on the screen which looked like a barcode/QR code, you then had to use the lens to find the access code, usually 2 letters. I have since found out that they only used it on about 12 games as they didn’t take into account different screen sizes and so on which made it impossible for some people to actually use.

you could technically carve a ball and paint it, meaning it could have also been a carved ball so it never needed to be introduced.
Slowly stretching the wood....using a vice to some extent... Then a swift knock will warp the golf ball(note itself also very flexible) into place
1:25 This part reminded me of the tilt-a-whirl amusement park ride when the car slows down from losing its momentum but still turns a little then suddenly.....BAM! It swings around full force again! I love that ride! I also love when art and science join together to create beautiful artwork like this. I don't really get the purpose of the first "toy." A privacy screen? That's really all it seemed to be.
7:34 that's so easy! cut the slots in the block of wood, then use steam bending to widen one slot enough to insert the ball and straighten the legs again while the wood is still soft and pliable. piece of cake.

According to how the puzzle question was worded, the puzzle at the end is impossible to make without cutting the wood. How else would you make the wooden cage in the first place?

I guess the wood is roughly shaped then heated is a steam bath for about 30-60 mins, when removed the ball is quickly forced into the interior hollow area and the wood allowed to return to shape…then dried sanded and finished.

The ball got in when the cage was warm and wet so it could be bent to allow the insertion of the ball, later straightened by any means, for example by hanging it and attaching a weight to the base and then leaving it dry. The puzzle is simple the walnut was Exposed to steam for an extended period of time making the "limbs" temporarily pliable enough for the golf ball to be wdged between and into the center column, then subsequently dried and then stained for finish.

The wood was soaked in water to a point it was able to bend or open just enough to allow the ball to fit through. When it was dried it returned to its natural shape
The part about the ball and wood not being cut or glued in the process gave me the solution. Once the carving was done, the ball was added by making it from scratch inside the carving.

Made the wood cage, steamed it, then twisted a bit while gently pushing together. Squeeze golf ball into, now larger, opening, clamp till dry to avoid any twisting? ✌️
wood can be bended when it's heated with high humidity, when it's sufficiently bendable, the ball can be inserted and in cooling, the wood retake his original solidity.

Soak the wood in water until it softens enough to allow the ball to go in. Let it dry (preferably with a vice or weight to get it back in a straight position)
They wet the wood so it's just flexible enough for a golf ball to squeeze through the 2 wood slats...Classic puzzle!

All the comments presume the wooden cage was moistened with water or steam, deformed allowing for the insertion of the ball, reshaped and allowed to dry. What if the cage were made of non-malleable steel? I suggest that what appears to be a golf ball is a clever illusion. It is, in fact, an inflatable ball made of plastic that is designed to resemble the pocked exterior of a golf-ball. The deflated ball is easily placed into the cage. It is inflated to the proper size using an air pump or compressor. In addition to air, the ball is filled with an epoxy that hardens to the proper weight and mass to simulate that of a regulation golf ball. Voilå.
the puzzle. shake it baby as hard as you can. the ball inside will deform under the fast motion and will junp out.
