Jaw-dropping Physics Toys/Gadgets 9

Ғылым және технология

Hi Everyone :)
Welcome back!
I get asked often: "Where did you get all this stuff?" My goal is to share the real magic of science and physics- and to this end I will update here (and in my store) suggestions on where to get some of these toys, kinetic art pieces, and scientific curiosities for yourself.
Purchasing items from the links on these pages will help support my IG page of science and wonder.

👉🏻 PDLC Electric Field Induced Transparency: when a voltage is placed across Polymer-Dispersed Liquid-Crystal film, long skinny molecules align with the electric field allowing light to pass through without scattering- with the field off the molecules thermally randomize and then do scatter the light passing through, producing a milky white translucent appearance.
👉🏻 Deja Vu II: astonishing spring powered kinetic art. Crafted from wood this device has two disks and each has a pattern of curved spokes that can rotate at different rates and direction to produce interesting illusions of motion via moiré interference effects. A ribbon spring drives an ingenious mechanism that uses ratchets (and the rotational momentum of the disks) to create the various visual modes- a half rotation of the disks will result in 20+ minutes of motion. With a full loading of the spring hours of motion will ensue. Another amazing creation by artist and designer William Le.
👉🏻 "Swing Thing": folk craft kinetic art from the 1970s
👉🏻 Dual Axis Sand Pendulum: the kinetic energy trades back and forth between swinging toward the support arm and then swinging perpendicular to that path tracing Lissajous figures in the sand.
👉🏻 Scrap Metal Kinetic Sculpture: a bent spring becomes a coupled harmonic oscillator with two modes of oscillation, one along a horizontal direction and one at an angle.
👉🏻 Moiré Pattern Portal: rotational motion of this moiré pattern creates the animation of radial flowing motion.
👉🏻 "Focal Decoder" Holiday Card: hidden images are revealed through ingenious and intricate Moiré pattern interference.
👉🏻 Moiré Season's Greetings: rotational moiré pattern generation on a Winter Holiday card from MoMA.
👉🏻 Tricolor Plasma Globe and Glow Wand: an engineered mix of low pressure noble gasses exhibit three colors of glow discharge in the plasma filaments that rise upward due to heating.
👉🏻 The Mezmocoin Infinity: precision machined kinetic spinning tops with helical motion illusion- a simple and elegant physics toy for everyday carry.
👉🏻 d6 Cube Tops: symmetry axes are often associated with interesting physics.
👉🏻 Color Flame Birthday Candle Physics: the colored parts of these candle flames are due to excitation of specific chemical elements mixed into the wax.

Using a hydraulic press you could squeeze the ball into the wooden frame, provided you applied enough moist heat (steam) to both the ball and the frame. You'd probably also need to place some support inside the frame on a vertical axis to prevent the wood from breaking. And I almost forgot- "Physics is the key to our future"!

Steam boxes are routinely used by wookworkers to make wood pliable to a certain extent til it cools in whatever shape it has been bent. Thin layers works best so tighter bends can be achieved from laminating them with glue. In this case the 4 slender parts were easily deformed when inserting the ball and reformed before it cooled and dried.

@@DrunkMagnus Im 51. We had a ZX Spectrum in the 80’s with the games being sold on audio tape which were easy enough to copy so the software companies tried all sorts of different copy protection from code wheels and charts to physical dongles that had to be plugged in before you could play the game. One of the ideas was this lens lok. On loading a block would appear on the screen which looked like a barcode/QR code, you then had to use the lens to find the access code, usually 2 letters. I have since found out that they only used it on about 12 games as they didn’t take into account different screen sizes and so on which made it impossible for some people to actually use.

All the comments presume the wooden cage was moistened with water or steam, deformed allowing for the insertion of the ball, reshaped and allowed to dry. What if the cage were made of non-malleable steel? I suggest that what appears to be a golf ball is a clever illusion. It is, in fact, an inflatable ball made of plastic that is designed to resemble the pocked exterior of a golf-ball. The deflated ball is easily placed into the cage. It is inflated to the proper size using an air pump or compressor. In addition to air, the ball is filled with an epoxy that hardens to the proper weight and mass to simulate that of a regulation golf ball. Voilå.

Можно сварить в масле. Некоторым сортам дерева достаточно кипячёной воды. Дерево становится мягким. И раздвинув прутья решётки просто засунули мяч внутрь клетки. Затем высыхая деревянная конструкция вернулась к первоначальному виду.

Yes! Put it in some hot water and that will cause the wood to expand just enough that ball pop in.

The wood was steamed, or maybe even soaked in hot water, to get it plyable enuff to squeeze the golf ball in 👍👍🇭🇲🇺🇸

Regarding the Challenge at the end of the video. You might be able to get the golf ball in there by wetting the wood and controlling the warp of the wood, to enable the golf ball to fit between the gaps?

I carve these but carve the ball inside them as i go. In this case i reckon he has steeped the wood in water, opened enough for the golf ball, then steep it again till wood fibers straighten out again, dry, then sand & finish etc

It’s a soft wood that is stained dark. Cut the grooves and soak it in water for 24 hours. Then use a clamp to force the golf ball through the grooves. Wait another day and it will be hard again.
