This video contains:
1) Projector Kaleidoscope: mirrors, symmetry, and the physics of optics are all explored through the assembly of this unique projector kaleidoscope project. Invented by the famous Scottish physicist Sir David Brewster (1781-1868), the kaleidoscope is one of the most popular physics toys ever sold.
2) Thermobile: Nitinol wire loop heat engine- the memory wire forcibly straightens out when heated (contact with heat conducting smaller wheel) causing the wheels to spin and providing mechanical kinetic energy from a cup of warm tea water.
3) Ray Optics Tabletop Kit: explore how lenses work with this inexpensive experimentation kit featuring three parallel laser beams and 2-D versions of lenses and other shapes that use refraction to alter the direction of light. Here a doubly concave lens interacts with the beams from a doubly convex lens.
4) Open-Closed Contraption: gearing, counterbalances, levers, and clever fonts combine to create this transforming signage. Fun engineering and original design by Ikeda Yosuke.
5) Bimetal Seesaw Engines: a candle powered heat engine powers a seesaw for bears.
6) Magnetic Sand Hourglass: ferromagnetic sand collects above a neodymium magnet in the wood base.
7) Tension Suspension: an interesting take on tensegrity where one heavy wire frame seems mysteriously suspended above another. I was intrigued by videos of similar constructions like this posted recently so I made this version in my shop last night to see how it worked.
8) Euler's Disk: (best with sound on) this classic physics toy exhibits the motion of a “spolling” coin, a motion that combines spinning and rolling. Designed with a large mass and a special smooth beveled edge, this device takes close to 3 minutes to come to rest- and amazingly, the contact point between the disk and the mirror can reach a speed of more that 200 mph!
9) Geometric Weaving: this Zulu telephone wire bowl, made in the traditions of South Africa, features a brilliant spiral pattern. The bright colors come from weaving strands of colored wires- the kind used to connect phones throughout buildings. This particular pattern inspired using a rotating base to display this bowl as kinetic sculpture.

Background music: 1 it gets irritating very quickly. 1 - the projecting kaleidoscope reminds me of junior high school dances where petri dishes, colored water/oil, and an overhead projector were our light show.
