I make it a point to fly every plane I review out in VR at least half a dozen times or so, and I fly VR "for fun" sometimes, and personally it really adds to the immersion to try and rely on the cockpit instead of the game OSD. Easier with some planes than others ;-)

@@C76Caravan Thats a thing, for sure. I get pretty bad nausea from WT VR after about half an hour, so I usually only fly 1 or 2 missions at a time in VR mode - but its amazing while it lasts. :-)

The best part about the Danger Dorito; if you lose an engine the plane will instantly flat spin

This is the only plane in War Thunder I hate for its history, having read Eric Brown's memoirs. He was the test pilot who blew the whistle on Gloster over the deep stall issue the Javelin was having, wherein it could not recover from a full stall due to the detached airflow from the delta wing occluding the elevators and stopping them from effecting a nose down moment. There was no way of fixing this issue because - a bit like flying wings of the time - its entire design was predicated on that tail and wing profile. Stall-death aircraft like these would not be considered safe until the advent of digital fly by wire. As such, Gloster silenced and disgraced Brown, though he did obviously come back punching with a record breaking career. Really, the best way to say it - it was the RAF's 737 MAX.

I personally think this plane looking really cool for its design and its got a pretty good missule for its br and good engine

@@olliewray1197 true, true still, I don't pay a single dollar on the game, grinding events and selling coupons instead, and this was the best plane I bought using the little amount of money you can get from events. Up there with the Ju288 for grinding.

The radar is useless most of the times the missiles are good for the br, the plane sems pretty decent but not easy to fly since you need some experience whit it and over all jet experiência and the cannons sems weird too, even tim was playing it like he never touched a jet But thats is Probably Because he is used to r60s aim-9L and magic-2s and firestreaks are some really weird missiles

Just unlocked javalin yesterday, im at 8.2 in german tech tree and also with british tech tree. having a regret, plane falls a part with single shot from enemy. Other players attack me as im one big target :/

Javelins in service regularly flew supersonic in a dive, favourite way was roll over and pull through. Also no Javelin with pylons ever had two, always four and from Mk 2 onwards flew with ventral tanks (extra 500 gallons of fuel) The speed restriction was only at low level because of the risk of elevator flutter that caused the loss of the prototype.

It's always nice to see you upload a video tim, can you do some video on Squadron vehicles? I have no idea what i want to take next(already have the B-48 Firecrest)

Javelin is definitely a mixed bag. Though I will say, the Firestreak missiles are surprisingly powerful past 5-6km of alt. The missile's range is significantly increased(like 3km shots are possible) and it loses way less speed turning. And most planes at high alt simply cannot pull hard enough to doge either. Plus you can use your radar to slave the missile, a very nice perk no other early IR missile gets.

For what it’s worth, the afterburner doesn’t work like a traditional afterburner in other engines. The fuel pumps were a little odd in the Javelin, to the point where if you engaged the afterburner below 20,000ft you’d actually LOSE approximately 4% of total engine thrust. Sadly this isn’t modelled correctly in WT, which ends up hurting its fuel economy in longer games. It should have the ventral fuel tanks, these were standard fitting from the Mk.5 onwards. The Mk.4 saw vortex generators added to the wingtips to aid in flight stability. Later the aft fuselage would also be reworked, which saw the pointed cowling of early marks replaced with what we see in game. It should be noted that the Javelin while labelled as an “all weather fighter” was really designed primarily as an interceptor. It was designed to replace the ageing Meteors which were unable to intercept Canberras in mock interceptions, an obvious security issue should the Cold War turn hot. The Javelin performed this role admirably and while hindered in its later service years by its limited top speed, with good GCI it was able to slot in behind almost any bomber adversary sent against it. Curiously, the Sea Vixen was designed in tandem with the Javelin for the same MOD operational requirement. The Sea Vixen suffered from some setbacks which placed the Gloster offering in the lead, leading to the Royal Navy adopting it later. There was a proposal for a “thin wing” Javelin, making it capable of supersonic flight but this was (tragically) ditched in favour of the upcoming English Electric Lightning.

Big beautiful Dorito of doom. Yeah she’s rough around the edges, but man it’s the main reason I’m thinkin Of grinding the British Air tree next. That and the lighting, but I’m hoping to keep my grinding timeframe within this decade.

Im entirely convinced that this game isn't f2p and that jet premiums are a must to even start grinding honestly.

when i first got this jet i hated it, every time i would turn it would just sway side to side it actually gave me a headache.. so i never played it again until now.. i was flying out the B-57B and here comes the Avro Vulc... i mean Gloster Javelin from my 3 o clock high i pop my airbrakes was going a bit fast to turn into him (he was diving in from my 3 oclock high, so i turned right then turned left and tried to circle behind him, if i went left he would have more time to get the guns on target) (not for a head on that's stupid in any plane) so those deadly ADENS wouldn't shred me.. almost got on his six but he pulled *i am going to show you a trick i learned* and reversed me while i was in a 1 or 2 circle fight.. panicked at this point and those ADENS made my jet turn into swiss cheese.. annoyed i went to the british tech tree put the javeln into a crew said f it and queued for a match this time doing what the javelin player did last round i climbed and my god even stock it climbed fairly decent, a sea vixen, and another javelin were up at 5-6,000m with me.. first kill a sabre basically stalled trying to shoot the other javelin and i just launched a missile (i am not good at killing jets when they are diving), then alittle awhile later another sabre reversed the other javelin and was so fixated he didn't see me coming from above him and launched another missile.. and this where the fun begins a a-4e pitched up for the vixen that seemed afk for most of the match and i fired at 1.2km and those ADENS made him non existent. and looked below and saw yet another sabre chasing the javelin once again was extremely fixated on him that i was going to fast and my aim was crap but on the last spray i set him on fire and the last guy was a a-4e there was a guy in a meteor the 8.0 one i think and he wanted a kill so i tagged along incase he missed i could of had a ace but i let him take the last guy.. after that i been loving the javelin

Absolutely despised this plane when I got it but I was coming from the Swift F7 at that point. It's not fast, it's not glorious, the gun convergence is trash, it's a massive target that loses speed instantly. But at least it got 4 uncaged missiles.

In SB this is a monster if you used it right and know its limits

Whooo the plane i asked is finaly her The missles at their br are kinda op, as they are so slow they actualy pull hard, because the slower they are the harder they can pull before reaching the 15g overload, and when downtiered people still climb to high br, and we know missles get better at alt. My favorite plane, britain 8.3/8.7 jets are something else lmao

Yeah the firesteaks can clap at high alt. Range is like doubled compared to on the deck.

Always thought the Javelin looked like its nearly a supersonic airframe, I wonder what aerodynamic changes would need to be made to push it past mach 1

The short answer is just that the wings are too thick. I didn't mention it in the intro, but in researching the history of the Javelin I found a proposed design for a "thin winged" version that would have been supersonic.

@@TimsVariety Even with the thick wings (10% thickness/chord} the Javelin regularly flew supersonic in a dive in service. The most popular way was to roll on the back and pull through.

@@fireuprc5693 This was an early prototype with much less power and it was impossible to "accidentally" exceed mach1 as a 40 degree dive was required. Questions had been asked in Parliament and doubts expressed about the Javelins speed. This was done to prove a point and as supersonic bangs weren't allowed over London, excuses were made about an oxygen emergency.

One thing about the Javelin to me was it was practically a delta wing aircraft. Unless it had something to do with stability I’m not sure why they didn’t eliminate the horizontal stabilizer and make this aircraft a pure delta fighter like the French Mirage?

As a night and all weather fighter, the tailplane allowed a much flatter landing attitude and freed the mainplane for large flaps and air brakes.

@@trigger399 Yeah, I can buy that. I remember watching F-106 jet fighters land when I was a kid and recall they had a super high angle of attack while landing, common among pure delta winged aircraft.

I remember when it was 9.0, and if im not mistaken, the flight model for this plane in the game is STILL wrong after many years. If I remember correctly, its more accurate to the Javelin FAW Mk. 6 or so, due to the rip speed being wildly inaccurate. Whenever I see a Javelin, especially back when it was 9.0, I usually let them get a free kill on me, since I know its a hard time with it.

war thunder states that the javelin has a top speed of 599mph however the FAW.mk.9 top speed was actually around 705mph

The pilot's notes state 535 kts from sea level to 7000 ft. This was over concern about elevator flutter which caused the loss of the first prototype. Above 7000ft the limit was mach 0.93 and over 40000 ft, mach 1.04, in a dive - Javelins regularly exceeded the speed of sound (in a dive)

its not that bad for its tier, stick with it, take four missiles and keep the burners on fed by full tanks.

I hated this thing with quite the passion playing it... Even in the down tier it feels like a chore

tim again wtf this plane is "fragile"? This thing can fly without a wing, or wingS ffs. This thing can do some utterly impossible things with the amount of damage it can sustain. Its like the tail could fly the entire aircraft by itself

Missiles only get 15G... The Sidewinders for most American (and export nation) fighters top out at either 18 or 20G. Heck, most American fighters get stuck with the 10G version until rank 7. 15G tolerance on those short range missiles doesn't sound too bad, actually closer to downright OP to me at that BR.

They aren't. They only work 2.5km and less. Being that close means more pull and less room for error. Lets also mention the missile slaves to your radar meaning it can get confused by teammates. Its not that op trust me

@@coleanderson8035 It still sounds like a weapon I would much rather have access to than the darn near useless Aim-9B. The fact that it slaves to your radar is an advantage that also helps put it over the E model, though the E model does have good range, which can help.

@@Skyfighter64 slaving a missile to your radar at very close distances isn't very useful. And yes aim 9bs are absolute garbage but those things are the worst missiles in the game. And remember, the firestreak must physically hit the target. There is no proximity fuse in the firestreak missile

@@Skyfighter64 the firestreak and red top both have good max G but loe trackrate. you MUST use radar slaving to use them effectively as the 4G max launch limit will prevent you from shooting a lot of times and the seekers tend to lose lock a lot.

climb to atleast 4 to 5,000m+ when i first got this jet (javelin) i just went full leerooy jenkins yeah i died quickly.. for the Lightning well that things primary role was a high altitude interceptor hence the 2 engines the jet has a climb of 115meters / s (i think) stock the way id probably fly that jet is to use it at a boom and zoom

really depends on how you fly it.. if you just go balls to the wall.. yeah expect to die quickly climb above the enemy to atleast 5,000m+ most of the time they are to busy looking for a target below they aren't looking up
