Jasper the Fearful Conure | Reading Conure Body Language | Step up Training a Conure

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today at our masterclass in Texas we are working with a conure named Jasper who is 1.5 years old and incredibly fearful of hands and stepping up, and sometimes he BITES! This video shows how to read conure body language and how to be receptive to it to earn your bird's trust.

    This is so helpful, I have a conure who is very similar! And love how his owner reads his body language, hope I’m also as in tune as her. The questions she as well were very helpful

    Seeing Jasper launch himself out of his cage and his owner standing there patiently waiting for him to land was like deja vu, it's the exact same thing my green cheek and I go through every time I try to take him from his cage. This video was very encouraging and I have a better idea now of how to work through this with him, thank you

    Depends on the birds, some birds need to be housed together because they can get overly stressed or even depressed if they are separated especially abruptly

    I need to think about this. The shop where I rehomed my pair would only sell them as a bonded pair, they are both females, and the cage was included in the purchase. They were not from the same clutch, but hatched around the same time. They were sold to a previous family with little kids who were afraid of the birds. I have a cinnamon turquoise who is the more confident one, flying short distances, is slightly larger, and she does step up. The other is “American dilute” and is hand fearful. I can coax her to step to my open hand with a seed visible, but then she flies to my shoulders. They both fly to my shoulders when I ask them to step up with shelled sunflower seeds or millet. Their flight feathers were clipped by the shop. I am looking forward to their molting. 😂 The birds had a noisy squabble when I came home this afternoon after being away all day. I wondered then if I should get a second cage and train them separately. Both know how to target with the chopstick and clicker, and are willing to be bribed with seeds. They are weird about their cage.

    @@AGM-ut5vs Definitely something to consider. Birds are very unique, they have their individual personalities and like/dislikes along with different fear levels. What you’re dealing with sounds like the same thing I’m going through with my two budgies, though one is male and the other is female. I don’t know the details of your situation but I see sometimes that when birds are housed together one can be braver than the other, this can make training difficult but not impossible, the more skittish bird just needs a bit more time to become completely comfortable with the concept of training, separating them outside of training might be stressful for the more skittish one, training them separately like in another room might be a better idea. If your birds are constantly squabbling and aggressive towards each other than likely you should get another cage, if you can’t afford a second cage then you could watch them like a hawk and gently distract them from their fighting but don’t use treats to distract them because it will teach them to fight to get treats, you wanna change their focus but not reward them for bad behavior, usually with my birds I just talk to them and they stop bothering each other. If they’ve only squabbled the one time it’s probably not something to be too concerned about unless they are actually trying to harm each other seriously. Also consider the size of their cage and their age, if they are just now maturing into adults they could be getting territorial especially over the cage and then you should definitely get another cage 😅

    OMG DAVE! I've been saying this for years... THEY ARE BORN WITH WINGS... Do taking them away would cause ISSUES! Lol I didn't think of the "we don't amputate our kids" though! Lmao 🤣🤣🤣 Made me laugh out loud! I have a Conure that looks exactly like Jasper, and is a little bit younger than him. I've had my boy since March 2022.... Although I don't have the issues she's having, I've never seen or experienced another Conure, so I have NOTHING to compare his behavior too. I think my boy and I are ok.... But i know there are things we can work on! Anyways, love you guys! I ONLY use your advice and products and FFS for my bird! You and Jaime are the best! Much love 💕💕💕

    Ooh this is perfect! I love seeing conure content, as I/my family has one. I sometimes find him a bit difficult to read and understand though, unlike this parront who did a wonderful job! Picked up on subtleties that I can scarcely even notice sometimes, haha. My boy is scared of hands, but he doesn't bite, he just backs away. And its mostly with me and other people he hasn't seen much of (since I've been away from home for years with only week-month long visits at most), he's really quite comfortable with my dad to the point where he's pretty much becoming a one person bird 😅 doesn't help that my dad doesn't listen to me at all and continues to feed him the wrong diet, pets him all over, that kinda thing, but I can't do anything about it 🥲 Anyway I'm hoping to build a better bond and take over more when I'm back home properly so videos like this are super inspiring and helpful 😊💕! Thank you Birdtricks and clients!

    @@BirdTricksWow, I saved a concur from a neighbor that I used to live by. Visiting her for many years. I would always hear the bird, but I never saw him. After many years of visiting she finally let me meet Benny. He lived in the garage in a cage alone with the black cover over him at all times. She wouldn't spend time with him. Talk to him. Sing with him. No interaction.. I just felt bad and I knew he was suffering and traumatized well, She passed away and Benny was given to me by her family knowing how much I've paid attention to Benny. Now I have Benny🦜💙 I purchased Benny every new toys, bird bath. Everything new in his cage. Took me a little bit to transfer him but he's in his new cage now and adjusting to it but, Benny is so traumatized. He wants his cover always down while in his room which I think is so unfair. But that's what he's used to. So I'm trying to learn how to uncover him and hand feed him. Let him fly around. Let him be free and with trust and love at home but, it's been hard. I Just purchased him a recorder that every time he taps with his peak. IT repeats what I recorded which is- I Love you Benny. Good morning Benny so he can get familiarized with my voice. He's got everything in his brand new cage. I'm spoiling him. He's blessed me & I'm blessed to have him, as we are both healing from Trauma but I want him to be more blessed and free and not scared in my home❤❤❤

    Chickens or rather hens would be great training for people..they are so fast in their reactions to everything. If you make even an unfamiliar sound, or ever so slightly too quick movement, they will take a surprised quickstep to the side and barely flare their shoulders in the “I’m less dominant, I’m in defensive-going to be mated mode” just for a second when they realize it was just random and they return to normal in about half a second. Sometimes they look at you and you know exactly what they’re thinking..”I’m going to jump on your shoulder, jump in your lap, etc.” I was holding treats in a bowl when one of my Whiting True Blues was up on a high roost, I read her body, and just held up my arm, tapped my arm a couple times (when hens step up on roosts, they tap with their beaks a couple times testing the solidity and position first) while saying “go ahead honey, come on!” and she flew from the roost to my arm in midair..two years old, never done it before..they love their black soldier fly larvae treats!

  • @hexane8

    @hexane8

    Жыл бұрын

    I had to search for the Whiting True Blues as I was not familiar with these birds. Chickens are underestimated as pets. Some are sweet and loveable dunces like this Olde English game hen I knew but some are pretty smart like Harriet, a little known barred-rock hen. Though he wasn't super high IQ, my silkie rooster was a lap chicken and never pooped on me, something even many Harvard and MIT grad parrots have difficulty mastering. I heard* Dr. Pepperdine had to wear plastic overalls because Alex, the famous African Gray, was a notorious lap pooper despite mastering quadratic equations. And Chickens can be great with kids provided they can be somewhat respectful of the birds. * This is terrible gossip I totally made up. Rest in peace Alex.

    We have the same thing with our two Green Cheeks. A male and female, strongly bonded, with the male coming to us from a family friend. He was very fearful of males and hands. But, after 4 years of scars on my husband (I kind of chuckle when I see them just because my husband was loosing patience, but I forced him to stick with it), we got our Piney to tap instead of bite when he didn't want something. I wish I could tell you how we did it.

    The beginning of the video is where my conure is at, he’s very little to no food motivated by he lets me get to as close as 6 inches before he steps away instantly, he was captive bred but had little to no human interaction I could tell, I’ve been respectful as to when I first got him he gave me a big bite and ouch! I let him out and he flies constantly, he’ll come close to me but never fully approach me. I am very unsure what to do as I’ve watched dozens of videos, he has a correct diet, and overall is very healthy, I am trying to get him better with hand tame so he can be taken to vets and checked for the care he needs.
