Jason Robert Brown Takes Us Behind "The Old Red Hills of Home"

In 1999, composer Jason Robert Brown won his first Tony Award for Parade, a musical he cowrote with Academy Award, Tony Award, and Pulitzer Prize recipient Alfred Uhry. Coconceived and directed by the legendary producer/director Harold Prince, the show is based on the true story of the trial and lynching of Leo Frank. The plot follows Frank, a Jewish man wrongly accused of murdering a young girl, and the efforts by his unwavering wife, Lucille, to clear his name. Jason Robert Brown joined us at SubCulture to share his memories of creating the iconic opening number that introduced him to Broadway.

The new revival is AMAZING and showcases the timelessness of your music! ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!!

I wish I could take a time-machine back to 1999 and see the original production of Parade. I didn't find out about that musical until like two years ago, and the cast album has become my favorite musical album.

I really wish this show had more attention, it is one of the most brilliant pieces of theatre I have ever discovered. I love every aspect of it, and I dream of directing it one day. 💙

Thank you for this breakdown. I'm a Black person and watching this musical, knowing the history - that last line of "introducing this whole world and fitting people who don't quite belong" hits so deep.

This man is not only a brilliant writer and pianist. He also can sing his face off!!!! I have this list of Broadway performers who are 99.9% female. I add JRB, Norm Lewis and Brian D'acrcy James to that list!

I've heard a handful of composers sing their own parts publicly (I'm thinking of Sondheim, Kitt, Tim Minchin, Eddie Perfect, LMM, Sara Bareilles, and Anais Mitchell) and I gotta say, among the ones I've heard, JRB is probably one of the most competent singers, and has one of the nicer timbres. The only ones I'd put above him are Bareilles and Mitchell, and they started out as singer-songwriters, so it's not really a fair fight.

Hi fellow JRB fans! Can anyone tell me what key he playing this in here? As a baritone this key suits me perfectly. I would like to have it played at this key for a backing track. Any help greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I'm a baritone and I can sing it in the original F major key. Then again, not every voice is the same. Is it an age thing?
