    June 22, 1944: "Destructo Patronum", it started when over 6 million katyusha's were fired at 'Heerengruppe Mitte's' location during the entire night.... Not with great accuracy ofcourse, but if you fire 6 frikkin million of them, they'll obliterate anything in that direction, including everything in a 10 mile radius around it! (Its Zhukov's way of saying 'FU and FK the forest around you!") Quite the 'magical spell' to make 1.1M Wehrmach-soldiers 'dissapear' in a timespan of 8 weeks...cut off the other 2 german army's, and effectively decided the doom of Nazi-germany. In history books its noted as Operation Bagration, but we know better now; "Destructo Patronum!"

    I watched the film last night knowing nothing except that it was by Ianucci. But if I'd watched it after seeing all the promotional stuff, I'd have gone in thinking that Jason Isaacs was in much of it, but he isn't. He's pivotal and scene-stealing, yes, but he doesn't appear until over half way through the movie (brilliant entrance btw). But the film is filled with tiny cameos by amazing actors- Diana Quick is in it and I didn't know it was her til I saw the credits! My favourite was blink-and-you'll-miss-her Sylvestra le Touzel as Khrushchev's wife; brilliant in The Thick of It- brilliant in everything she does.

    It's a dark comedy, and a lot of it is really thickened on, yet in a féw lines, there is sóme historical correctness to it. Beria was indeed a scumbag. Stalin nicknamed him mockingly 'their Himmler', as he was a master of manipulation, extortion, blackmailing and worse things, also responsible for the deportation of millions of ppl to the Gulags. Berie didnt die like in this movie though, but in general lines; There was a massive internal power-struggle, right after Stalin's death, in which, many key-figures that are portrayed in the movie, ofcourse in a caricature of themselves, are making a hilarious mess on how to proceed. Its just entertainment. Like King Ralph with John Goodman. or The Dictator/Ali G, with Sasha Baron Cohen.

    Anyone else notice that you can tell whether Jason Isaacs is playing a good guy or a bad guy depending on the length of his hair? Long hair? Bad guy. Short hair? Good guy. Examples: Lucius Malfoy, long hair, villain. Colonel Tavington (The Patriot), long hair, villain. Captain Steele (Black Hawk Down), shaved head, good guy. The West Wing, Event Horizon, Fury... all short hair, all good guys. Peter Pan? Mr. Darling--short hair, good guy; Captain Hook--long hair, bad guy, IN THE SAME MOVIE.

  • @antagonistlover

    The OA - short hair, he is a bad guy, antagonist. Stockholm, Pennsylvania - short hair, he's quite a character who kidnapped and held hostage a little girl. Look away - short hair, he's a fckd up dad who treats his daughter... wrong. Cure for wellness - short hair, no comments, no spoilers, go and watch. The last minute - short hair, he's a bad bad guy. Star Trek Discovery - short hair, he's... a controversial character. Rosemary's baby - short hair, he's Roman Castevet (enough said). So your theory is wrong. You're welcome.

    I guess you're not a fan of _The Producers_ or even _The Great Dictator._ Most people believe you can laugh at evil mass murderers without minimizing their threat. _The Death of Stalin_ is actually a great history lesson to get people interested in the criminality of Soviet leaders in the 1950s, and spreads awareness of their evil. I laughed and also learned more about what monstrous behavior was normalized among the USSR leadership. I don't know how anyone could see the movie and think Stalin and Beria are portrayed as harmless. They may have funny lines, but they're shown accurately as heartlessly evil.

  • @Paelorian

    @Paelorian

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@BlackEpyon Of course you're right. It's a comedy, although drama films aren't "history lessons", either. You'd have to watch a docudrama or documentary for a proper history lesson that refuses to change facts for the sake of storytelling, since the needs of entertainment almost always necessitate simplifying and dramatizing history. The best historical films know they can't achieve perfect accuracy and aim instead for "authenticity", which is often almost as educational. _The Death of Stalin_ scores pretty well on authenticity, although it does have a comic presentation. Most of the stories in are based on real stories and anecdotes from the USSR, and they included a lot of authentic little details. And you're right, the portrayal of Zhukov was absolutely brilliant. I saw the television series _Chernobyl_ recently, which was obviously simplified for the sake of drama but was authentic and I think quite educational. Historical fiction and entertainment shouldn't be relied on as an education in itself, but it certainly sparks an interest and encourages people to learn more about real events. The series _Rome_ is a good example, as it greatly simplifies history and adds fictional elements for the sake of drama. But there was never a more authentic or convincing portrayal of ancient Rome on screen. Dramas and other artistic depictions can't give you the facts a history book or encyclopedia article can, but they are able to show some very important historical truths in ways words on a page cannot. Like communicating the atmosphere of a place or of a moment.

    Ghastly usamerican interviews. Isaacs is so different on his home ground compared to uptight and censored usa. A pity how he has learned that way of hollwood of the big superficial BS interview. And yes, he used the word venal because across the pond people are still well educated, intellectual and can read and debate intelligently having not been dumbed down. What strikes me and is sad is how terribly old he looks due to smoking and drinking. He was incredibly handsome almost beautiful and should have aged much better if he'd not abused his health and body with tobacco and maybe too much drink. He is still attractive but I think of people like Cary Grant who took care of himself and at 80 looked radiant. Jason is here only 53 or 54.
