My biggest fear walking into this movie was "How are they going to make Beria funny?" And I gotta give this movie credit; they managed to make him funny whilst at the same time not shying away from what a monster he was.

Zhukov easily stole the show, but all of the Politburo members were pretty hilarious, without shying away from the fact that they were total monsters IRL. As for Beria, I loved when he was casually handing out execution orders at the start of the movie. "Shoot her before him but make sure he sees it, shoot him take him to his church and dump him in the pulpit, the rest I leave up to you."

From a historical perspective, Khrushchev is hard to pin down. It's reasonably common knowledge that Stalin and others used to make fun of and prank him. You would be forgiven for thinking that Khr was merely a play toy. But he not only won the post-Stalin power struggle, he did it so covertly that Lavrenti Beria never knew what hit him.

Nixer Doyle I thought Bob Hoskins did a better job in Enemies at the Gate in portraying NK even down to the appearance. I dont think Steve Buscemi really was as convincing in the role.

@@Tridhos The actors were picked for their resemblance to the characters in the Death of Stalin graphic novel and not their resemblance to the actual people. Zhukov was a short, stocky man but in the novel he was this tall and imposing warrior, Beria was a weedy little Himmler-looking stick but in the novel he was portrayed as an obese spymaster whose knowledge had allowed him to grow fat and complacent.

I have massive respect for Buscemi's loyalty to New York and their firefighters. The fact he returned to his old fire department to work rescue after the 9/11 attacks cements my respect for Buscemi.

A release this early in the year? From IFC, who doesn't have the money for campaigning (Boyhood was a special case of capturing lightning in a bottle)? It got dumped, sorry to say. It's a magnificent movie, though. The Oscars only go for what pays the most in campaign money, but they aren't the arbiters of taste. Not my taste anyway.

@@TheWickedWizardOfOz1 Some ( a rather sigificant amount ) of their nominations are pretty good, but far from all. But if you compare movie festivals around the world as well as some movie buffs, you tend to find most of the greatest ones in any given season in my experience.

Steve Buscemi has performed some outstanding roles. He was brilliant in Death of Stalin, even though Jason Isaacs had the greatest scenery-chewing lines. It was great to see him give props to Tarantino for ensuring that actors received name recognition. But the thing that impresses me the most about him is that, on 9/11, he went to the fire house where he worked previously as a firefighter, and suited up. Legend.

I was a bartender in NYC's West Village for many years. Steve Buscemi would be come in for lunch at least once a week, newspaper under his arm. Not only is he a great actor, but he's an extremely down to earth, friendly, and normal guy, despite being so recognizable and famous. After a while, he was a just another guy coming in for lunch and the staff loved him for it.

Severely underrated actor, he made some of the movies he was in.

I never get tired of seeing movies with Stever Buscemi in them. Amazing actor. A real actors actor. True talent.

When I see Steve Buscemi, the first thing that always comes to mind is "this man is once-in-a-century national treasure."

ArmAd Spengler The spoken reason was “mocking Stalin and Zhukov who won WW2 is unacceptable” and WW2 is kinda sacred now - but that’s some bullshit reasoning bc Stalin barely has screen time and Zhukov is depicted super handsome and hilarious in the movie. I’m sure 90% of politicians ranting about the movie didn’t see it but were told to hate it. Liking Stalin openly is unacceptable for Putin as he poses as a liberal (acceptable only for lesser figures) but low key sure he does like him for charisma and fear and power and empirical attitude. And the real reason behind ban is “no laughing at any government or people would realize it’s the same nowadays”. By the way we Russians and our parents and grandparents are traumatized enough by soviet censor ways so we know it’s good stuff if it gets banned. It’s a great movie (but maybe little more tragic and less funny for us but we don’t smile often anyways lol)

"Death Of Stalin" was an unexpectedly great movie, hilarious & interesting! Buscemi rocked as usual...

I literally just watched the film. It was amazing. Very very dark humor. Funny, but really dark and really sad undertone. Great acting overall, fantastic cast, even the extras were fantastic in this movie, huge attention to detail. Instant classic in my opinion.

Yes, it's been banned, which is not good. But after 5 seconds of googling I found this movie on the internet. We have our ways. :) Of course we know who you are, Stephen, I hope you'll come to Russia (especially Moscow) again!

I can try. Stalin is still very popular in Russia (for instance, there was a project "Name of Russia" on TV, its purpose was to elect the most notable personality in Russian history, Stalin came in third place). The culture minister Medinsky didn’t like the movie because of the “extremism”. That’s problematic, because it’s not clear what it is, anything could be extremism. Medinsky said that a lot of older people will see it as an insult to Soviet past. He saw it this way for sure. Also a bunch of Stalin’s fans are now presidential candidates (the election will be very soon, in two weeks). And they are very proud of their views. One of them said that Stalin was the best political leader of the 20th century. Yes, there were repressions, but my father had a chance to get an education and made some money. he said. Sadly, many people really think that country’s greatness is more important than people’s lives. So, to sum up, some Russian politicians can’t deal with satire and get offended real fast.

As a German who has been confronted with the crimes of the Nazi dictatorship and the Communist regime in East Germany since his childhood, which was taught repeatedly in schools and discussed in the media, I find it simply appalling that Stalin and his regime are still so glorified in Russia. His only merit was to end the Nazi war of annihilation. However, this cannot mean that Stalin's illegal cleansing and mass murder of his own population, before and after the Second World War, is completely ignored and that this figure of contemporary history is so uncritically revered as an exemplary character. I am really concerned about the future of Europe and the world that the renewed cult about Stalin's leadership is not only being used and protected by Putin, but that the Russian people seem to continue to support this despite better knowledge.

Westerners like you and West-fanboys seem be very fond of propaganda dictated by their oligarchical masters through media which is largely owned by same conglomerates, even "local" media, in US at least, isn't as "local" as one might hope. And it's a confirmed fact that actual desires of the nation in USA bear statistically-negligent influence over creation of policies, no matter what group of public stooges is "in power", and don't make me start on Merkel & Steinmeier. Yet you all keen on believing any anti-Russia bullshit you hear. I myself is not a fan of Stalin or Bolshevics in general, mostly due to his "Socialism in one country" stance and their inability to build efficient or even sustainable state management system, but that Stalin dirt-smearing and Hitler-equating campaign is too ridiculous even for me. And so for many others, same with Putin. And Putin fucking sucks (actually, mostly Medvedev & his friends who suck the most) with his conservative, non-existent internal affairs policies.

My favourite part of the film is right at the end where Brezhnev is seen behind Kruschev already plotting how to take over.

"I want to make a speech at my father's funeral" "And I wanna f**k Grace Kelly" One of the best lines of the film.

So Buscemi was a firefighter at one time. After 9/11 he came in and helped on the collapse site for I think several weeks. He hates to talk about it. This is one superb human being.

Redbad of Frisia Probably. I’ve heard it described as being a backward hick type of place. But then every country has one of those, as well as a stuck-up bit that looks down on the rest! It’s perspective I guess. I do remember one play (Red Monarch) where Stalin and Beria have Irish accents to emphasize this difference with the other characters who spoke with English accents.

I had never heard of the movie until this clip on the show, but after seeing it, it looked rather funny and even quirky. I immediately rented it and loved it! It does portray a strange sense of humor, it's rather dark, dry, and sarcastic. It reminded me in some ways of the Grand Budapest Hotel in terms of humor style. Highly recommend!

He's such a wonderful actor! Since Fargo I've been a huge fan of him. His Khrushchev is such a... Khrushchev )))) p.s. the movie is truly brilliant, accurate and perfect. It's full of absurd, grotesque and terror. Perhaps, that's the actual reason why it's been ridiculously banned here, in Russia, - our officials might have seen a lot of resemblance and might have recognised themselves. There is a lot of tragic about this film, but there's nothing that could be described as insulting. As a viewer I'm infinitely grateful to Mr. Iannucci and each member of the cast for their work. p.p.s. It appeared on the Internet quite a few weeks ago, but it couldn't have been shown on TV - it's totally controlled. greetings from Russia. yep.

Can we just take a moment to admire the awesome movies Buscemi has been in: Resevoir Dogs, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Monster's Inc., Big Fish, Burt Wonderstone.

When he v was on Conair and the plane was going down he was singing” he’s got the whole world in his hands!” That was so funny.

I love how Buscemi refused to get fake plastic teeth like all those other actors. America's obsession with fake looking "perfect teeth" is ridiculous. And yes, before you make fun of me, I'm a European with crappy teeth! :D

I’m a huge fan of Steves! He’s been in amazing movies and I especially love his voice work Charlottes Web as Rat “Templeton” and Randall Boggs in Monsters Inc/University. He’s probably done loads more. He’s just got the most recognisable of voices out there. Love him 💕💕💕

One of my favorite actors. Was amazing in Boardwalk Empire and that one episode of Electric Dreams.

This is one of the most brilliant films ever! Being too goofy, it is actually not very far of what was like in soviet era. Remember, as was the norm in soviet times, even now with Putin, "Failures is treason". So take your conclusions from this.

The way Steve Buscemi looks at him 9:05 like "bruh, you were followed because you're famous, not because they were secret police you paranoiac."

Brilliant movie, brilliant actor - also Michael Palin was brilliant!

The delivery on when he says "Svetlana is here" and she responds "I'm here, I'm over here" is just fantastic haha.

Such a intelligent actor! Also, kudos to Stephen Colbert that he had this interesting conversation and didn't interupt his guest, when he told a politically sophisticated story that probably is not that enticing for a middle brow late show audience. All those other hosts like Bill Maher, Jimmy Kimmel, even Trevor Noah would have jumped in much earlier and stiffled their guest.

My celebrity dream date since I was 14 and saw him in Armageddon.

to be fair he's more weird- or memorable- than repulsive-looking. also his wife wasn't ugly, even slightly prettier than average I'd say - i.e. he was in the taste of a good-looking woman

Seen it 4 Times and will be watching many more times! The Acting was Subline. If only in real life these people where that relatable instead of the Mass Murderers they were!!

The fact that he took on the character in Boardwalk Empire as Nucky, a very serious role, just shows how diverse an actor he is; kudos to a very under-rated actor🙂

"Has it been shown in Russia?" "It's been BANNED in Russia." That's basically an unoffical good review, isn't it? It's the Kremlin equivalent of Trump threatening to sue Michael Wolff ^_^

It doesn't mean anything actually. Movies like this in Russia are banned just because our government tries to inflate some Cold War-ish anti-West hysteria and any movie (any work of art really) that as they see it undermines the glorified image of the soviet (and imperial) russian past is threatening their propaganda. Loved the 'Death of Stalin' BTW, I think it's hilarious and not offensive at all. In fact, it made me dig into this history period to find out which parts of the movie were based on real events and phenomena.

They unfortunatley still ban theatrical releases of movies, but very very rarely. But they actually do ban movies in US too. Both countries have their share of dumb people. Ban of Death of Stalin is super controversial in Russia though.

Both countries need to ban all movies made in thier own countries for a year or two. Only allow movies made by foreigners.

Can you try to explain why "Death of Stalin" is banned from cinemas in Russia? It is a satirical movie about a certain period in the Soviet Union. What is so upsetting to the current political regime in Russia that they feel the need to ban it from today's public? Are the characters depicted in this movie all heros and saints of the Soviet Union (including Stalin), not to be criticised or laughed at at all, especially in a foreign made film? Or what is the reasoning behind this censorship?

What a great actor. All of his roles are totally believable.

I liked him in that Tales from the Crypt episode. Great flick.

The death of Stalin was a master film of comedy and factual events
